Will there be any males in women's teams at the Olympics?

Discussing men in women's sports with my husband, who believes it will never happen (despite me telling him it already is). He asked if this will be the case during the olympics?

Can anyone give me any info to back up my argument as, if not this time, perhaps it will be the norm in years to come?

I want my DH to engage with this issue as we have sporty girls in the family, but although he agrees with me he just thinks it will never be allowed so not worth worrying over.

The rules have now become quite stringent as a result of so much controversy, So I'm doubtful if we'll see any this year; though please show your husband all of the examples emanting from the United States - with men taking medals meant for women on a frequent basis.

https://www.insidethegames.biz/articles/1143198/restrictions-transgender-paris2024-games

as far as I understand it that article is misleading; there's no single Olympics-wide set of rules, it's up to the bodies for individual sorts, some such as athletics & swimming have firmly come down on the side of no TW in female events, but plenty of others have not committed.

RebelliousCow · 08/06/2024 11:42

Yet it is fine to name women as 'biological females'.......

It could not be nmore human than to accurately describe someone as the sex they are.

ChateauMargaux · 08/06/2024 20:48

@IcakethereforeIam... that is such a depressing article... includes such gems as sex is based on more than genetics so athletes should be referred to by their preferred gender and noone should speculate about their sex... and journalists should say.. 'is' instead of 'identifies as'...

https://olympics.com/ioc/gender-equality/portrayal-guidelines

And yes.. it would seem like the IOC is anticipating many trans athletes and no one is permitted to speculate whether the 'inclusion before fairness' is progress or not.

I hope there are enough journalists who will be clear and honest.

RebelliousCow · 09/06/2024 09:57

Thiose guidelines to not mentioning the actual sex of the competitor go against all of the guidelines for ensuring that women and women's sport is empowered.

RebelliousCow · 09/06/2024 09:58

There is no information on who is on the Olympic committee that decides these guidelines, and how they get to be there. Who are these people?

TWETMIRF · 09/06/2024 11:38

I suspect that if the Olympics were still run like the original ones, all of these men would stop claiming to be women.

Ross Tucker also all over it as you would expect

I would very much like journalists to agree that if the IOC attempts to silence the truth, they will indeed stay silent. Completely. Any males competing in women's categories are invisible - but not in the way the IOC wants.

Make them an obvious black hole that will get people asking questions. List the women who came second, third and fourth, with no mention of the winner. Talk about the woman who missed out on competing by not getting the last qualifying slot. Say what the record time/weight/distance was at the start of the event. Make people look into the void.

maybe he’s reconsidered his position @NotBadConsidering ?

Possibly. He also wrote co-wrote a book with Pippa York so I’d be interested to see the reaction of York to this latest article.

Oh I’d forgotten about that! Yes me too

I welcome anyone, especially journalists, who are able to turn 180°, come out of the corner and speak. Maybe he has things he might regret but better speak out now than remain silent. Thank you David Walsh. I hope your colleagues join you.. silencing the press is not a good starting point by the IOC, especially in a week where Instagram close the accounts of women using the word women.

domineastronomy · 09/06/2024 21:20

Great article by Walsh.
So good to read a journalist stating that Semenya is male. So rare to read the truth.

ChateauMargaux · 09/06/2024 22:46

https://x.com/cathydevine56/status/1798968026814947459. She spells it out - The document uses the work done to ensure equal recognition representation & inclusion of female & male athletes at the pinnacle of elite sport to undermine all this important work & coerce female athletes to include male athletes in female sport.

Best response: I want to scream until the windows break.

It really does look like Males will be competing in the Female Category and journalists have been banned from reporting it.. ...

I hope someone takes the IOC to the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

In April 2019, the Court of Arbitration of Sport declared that: 'discrimination (based on sex) is a necessary, reasonable and proportionate means of achieving the legitimate objective of ensuring fair competition and protecting the “protected class” of female athletes in those events.' The World Anti Doping Association code refers to : 'Athletes’ fundamental right to participate in doping-free sport and thus promoting fairness and equality for Athletes worldwide. The Court of Arbitration of Sport Stated: "Male puberty confers performance advantages which prevent fair competition between the sex categories.'... Does the 'fundamental right to participate in a fair competition not extend to women? I also want to scream until the windows of the IOC Headquarters break.

If David Walsh has about-turned, maybe one of the gender critical podcasters or youtubers could see if he would be willing to be interviewed by them. The stories of people who've changed their minds, or are in the process of doing so, need to be heard. It may help others rethink things too.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/06/2024 15:01

That’s a good idea @ASportsMum he does seem to have shifted quite a long way from the Laurel Hubbard piece
