Telegraph today:

”The first ever Mumsnet “manifesto” is urging the next government to define what a woman isin the Equality Act.
The popular online forum released a 25-page document on Friday which it said represented the chief concerns expressed by its nine million users over the past four-and-a-half years.
It has 12 asks of the incoming administration after July 4, including to “guarantee access to single-sex spaces” for women by reforming the 2010 Equality Act.”

if you have the Telegraph app the article also includes some quotes from Labour politicians. Conservatives For Women have put them in a post on X:

How the word ‘woman’ has gradually been erased from the English language

A charity's recent use of the term 'bonus hole' to refer to a vagina is the latest addition to a depressing glossary of the identity wars

Blimey, MN Towers have gone Officially TERF?

Leafstamp · 01/06/2024 08:09

Good to see, although I would also have like to have seen something about protecting children from the harms of trans ideology.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 01/06/2024 08:18

Is it based on the survey that MNHQ did recently asking what our big issues for the election were? If that's what a lot of us said then they'd include it.

fluckityfluckfluck · 01/06/2024 08:24

Bravo

Lovelyview · 01/06/2024 08:27

Excellent news! Thanks MNHQ!

Bodeganights · 01/06/2024 08:31

Right, so the government cannot say they didnt know.

MN and 9 million users have told them.
Glad its archived. As soon as one politician says the refrain, I didn't know, we can send the archive and ask what the fuck have they been doing.

BiscuitTins · 01/06/2024 08:35

Thanks for the link to the article. It’s really chilling to see each of those quotes and realise how much of a battle is still ahead

ArabellaScott · 01/06/2024 08:39

Fucking brilliant! Thank you, MNHQ. I think those are excellent points.

I haven’t read this yet but sounds good

I didn’t know they were doing it

Yes I agree. And the "assisted dying" point is worrying. Like transing minors and self-ID, one need only look at Canada to see how that turns out.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 01/06/2024 08:41

And yes - thankyou MNHQ. For asking us and for telling them.

It needs a fuck of a lot more discussion and consideration. I share your reservations.

Good point

Thank you MN and thank you for posting the link

mrshoho · 01/06/2024 08:48

This is great to see. Thank you!

EasternStandard · 01/06/2024 08:50

I’m glad the Equality Act point has been picked up and highlighted

ResisterRex · 01/06/2024 08:53

@ArabellaScott in the BBC Liz Carr documentary recently, she interviewed Lord Falconer (of GRA fame) who was pro-"assisted dying". Worth a watch.

guinnessguzzler · 01/06/2024 09:07

Excellent news and well done to Mumsnet.

WarriorN · 01/06/2024 09:24

Thank you @MNHQ!

I haven't read it yet - does it include concerns for children?

There's a heartbreaking thread here today describing the death of a child who was "helped" by mermaids etc.

Child safeguarding should be a key priority

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/06/2024 09:31

Good to see - and very pleased to see that as well as the Equality Act reform that the first two priorities are :

  1. A statutory inquiry into maternity care
  2. Immediate action to tackle birth trauma

The idea that the NHS is wasting money on sex change treatment for adults or children along with numerous pointless yet expensive rainbow initiatives while women & babies are routinely harmed because of inadequate maternity services is appalling and speaks to a deep streak of misogyny / lack of care for women that runs through the upper echelons of our medical services.

illinivich · 01/06/2024 09:50

The first ever Mumsnet “manifesto” is urging the next government to define what a woman isin the Equality Act.

I thought a woman was defined as a female of any age in the Equality Act? It's clearly based on sex.

The problem is that governments are giving men female id. Id doesn’t change a persons sex, but it does make it difficult for service provides to exclude men with female id.

We are in danger of walking into having 'legal sex' in addition to 'biological sex' and creating an unnecessary group. Am i, as a women, biological female but not legally female? Or am i also part of a legal female grouping that includes men with female id and excludes women with male id? What benefit does that give me?

Given how dominant the trans lobby is, and how much politicians fall over themselves to appease them, are we sure that 'biological sex' will remain the only sex category that protects women and girls from male violence?

We just need to stop giving adult men female id. They aren't female.

Wow
Here we are on the naughty step & they're listening. (Thanks to those of you with infinite patience that "remember the lurkers")

[Wish they had said in person breastfeeding support! I did not enjoy the "hands on support" I got 😬😂]

Boiledbeetle · 01/06/2024 09:56

ArabellaScott · 01/06/2024 08:41

76% of our users tell us they think women’s voices are not heard at the top levels of government: we’re challenging politicians to change that, engage with these issues and prove that they are listening to women.

That's a lot of women! I'll read the rest of this evening as I have a visitor arriving shortly.
