As night follows day...
Who on earth is still funding this grifter? His first tweet of the day

He's totally incoherent - what does 'partially irreversible' mean? Which bit is irreversible- the stunted penile development in boys or the reduced bone density and incontinence in girls?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 30/05/2024 14:22

He means that PB have to be allowed because otherwise people go directly to cross sex hormones - and the latter have irreversible effects. However, that's rather undermined by the former also having irreversible effects.

I'm not liking the NHS chances at this point. That just cannot be harmless.

Why is he so invested in the “born in the wrong body” myth?

And how did someone so devoid of the ability to think critically and dispassionately train as a barrister?

He actually says that the effects of opposite sex hormones are partially reversible.

But he doesn't make clear why he thinks they need puberty blockers in order to have time to think. They'd still have that time to think if their bodies were allowed to develop normally. With the added benefits that their brains would also mature during this time and their bodies wouldn't be subjected to unnecessary damage. And what evidence there is indicates that at least 80% of them would grow out of their gender dysphoria during puberty and accept their bodies as they are.

OldCrone · 30/05/2024 14:45

Why is he so invested in the “born in the wrong body” myth?

The most obvious answer is that he may have a personal interest for the same reason as Susie Green.

I bet the Fox Killer is incandescent and planning yet another trawl of funding from the gullible for yet another lost case.

Who is 'the Fox Killer'?

GailBlancheViola · 30/05/2024 15:19

Jolyon Maugham, previously a tax barrister who enabled people to avoid tax and now head honcho of the Good Law Project that fundraise to take various cases and so far have a losing streak worthy of Eddie the Eagle.

Known as the fox killer after he boasted about bludgeoning a fox to death with a baseball bat while wearing his wife's kimono on Boxing Day a few years ago.

GailBlancheViola · 30/05/2024 15:44

Thanks @OldCrone, I meant to add that.

TWETMIRF · 30/05/2024 15:44

He's called the fox killer because he posted on twitter how he bludgeoned a fox to death in his garden at Christmas while wearing his wife's kimono.

heathspeedwell · 30/05/2024 15:51

Despite being a multi millionaire, he somehow couldn't afford fox-proof fencing for his chicken run. A fox got trapped in his rubbish fencing, so Jolyon thought the best solution would be to beat it to death.

He's very clever when it comes to finding loopholes to help multinationals avoid paying tax. In other areas of life, he doesn't seem to be at all bright.

If labour don't carry on the ban, they're going to have to face a lot of questions as to why not. Which is going to be tricky in light of the Cass report.

The good thing now is the era of no debate is well and truly over.

So they are going to be held accountable no matter what they decide.

Yes I agree this has been well played by VA. Surely any government in the future ending the ban will have to have evidence that puberty blockers are not harmful. We'll all wait and watch for this.

CantDealwithChristmas · 30/05/2024 17:08

Jolyon the Fox Killer now on Twitter suggesting that parents of 'trans' children simply 'pop over' to the EU every month to give their children PB injections there.

Has anyone seen a more irresponsible and blithely overprivileged tweet today?

AnotherAngryAcademic · 30/05/2024 19:03

Dear Jo Maugham KC

Re your statements 30th May 2024 (quoted below):

(1) “IMO, this is unlawful discrimination. Logically, I can't see how it can be true both that (1) blockers are dangerous so it is "essential to make the order with immediate effect to avoid serious danger to health" (the statutory test) and (2) they are safe for cis kids to use.”

And

(1) “My tentative view: if you think your child is benefitting from blockers ask your regulated prescriber for blockers in injectable form, which I understand to last three months (and be safer anyway) and take the injection in the EU”

Re (1)

Puberty blockers may be prescribed for female children with signs of puberty before the age of 8 and male children with signs of puberty before the age of 9. Their gender identity, or lack thereof, is irrelevant.

These drugs have not been shown to be safe in children without a clinical diagnosis of precocious puberty. Their gender identity, or lack thereof, is irrelevant.

Puberty blockers are still available for both “trans” and “cis kids” (to use your terminology) with a diagnosis of precocious puberty. They will not be made available to either “trans” or “cis kids” (to use your terminology) without a diagnosis of precocious puberty.

It is not clear from your statement (1) how this constitutes unlawful discrimination or is illogical?

Re (2)

This seems to be an attempt to give medical advice. It is not clear from your public biography that you are medically qualified, or the level of training you have reached? It is not lawful for those without a primary medical qualification to dispense medical advice in the UK, and I am surprised that a legally qualified individual with the status of King’s Counsel is unaware of this.

If I am mistaken, and you are in fact medically qualified, this is excellent news. As you are no doubt aware, in a recent case (Re J (Transgender: Puberty Blocker and Hormone Replacement Therapy) [2024] EWHC 922 (FAM)) Sir Andrew McFarlane P noted at paragraph 36 that the court had been unable to identify a UK based clinician prepared to accept instruction as an expert. I’m sure those who are finding it difficult to locate suitably qualified clinicians in the UK will be delighted that you are willing to give opinions on these matters.

Eddie held a British ski jump record for a time and took his international defeats well. Really unfair on him to be in the same sentence as Jolyon unless it's something like a losing streak more extensive than ....

HoneyButterPopcorn · 31/05/2024 10:25

Eddie was also quite self effacing and rather funny. Charming in a ‘aw shucks, I’m just having fun’

the fox basher sounds as if he’d be the last person on the planet you’d want to be stuck in a lift with.

Oh yes it was not meant as a slight on Eddie who I think is a rather charming character, it was more to show how far from winning anything Jolyon is.

I was trying to think of a football team to use instead.

Maaate · 31/05/2024 13:48

Jolyon is no longer a KC

Not sure if it's of any significance but just interesting to note

I wonder why?

HoneyButterPopcorn · 31/05/2024 13:53

Did he quit or stepped down?

Maaate · 31/05/2024 13:59

Well from what I am reading he has ceased to be a barrister but that doesn't mean you stop being a KC (e.g if a KC retires from the law they retain their KC title).

In short, you don't stop being a KC if you no longer practice law

Maaate · 31/05/2024 14:01
