The Times: Labour plans to simplify ‘dehumanising’ gender change process

Read it and weep, vipers

"Labour will make it easier to change gender and is considering allowing a single family doctor to sign off on the decision under plans to “simplify” the process.

The party is considering how to make the legally binding certificate easier to obtain while still having guardrails to prevent mirroring controversial proposals in Scotland that would have removed doctors from the process altogether.

The plans include ditching a panel of doctors and lawyers that approve gender recognition certificates, the document allowing transgender people to have their affirmed gender legally recognised, and only requiring one doctor to be involved in the process.

The Times understands that one option under consideration is that the doctor could be a GP. Labour would also remove the ability of a spouse to object to the change. A source said the party wanted to make the process “less medicalised” but added that the plans would retain the involvement of a doctor and would not allow people to self-identify in order to obtain legal changes.

They said it had not yet been decided whether the medical professional would be a GP or a gender specialist, with the issue likely to go to consultation if the party wins the next election.

The discussions centre on concerns that if the single doctor was a specialist, a GP would still need to make the referral, therefore retaining the two-step process that Labour wants to drop."

labour in still fucking batshit mental shocker. Not.

Runskiyoga · 19/05/2024 22:04

<watch me stampede away from thoughts of voting Labour>

Don't build on bad law Labour, you need to differentiate sex and gender first. Self ID of gender not an issue.

UtopiaPlanitia · 19/05/2024 22:14

So basically it’s more of the bureaucratic creeping self-ID by the back door and removal of spousal objection. So they haven’t listened to one thing GC campaigners have tried to tell them 🤷‍♀️

That isn’t acceptable to me as a leftwing feminist. I do not support Labour in this endeavour.

ResisterRex · 19/05/2024 22:15

Trapping women in abusive relationships where the man is drunk on his own fetish and power.

Making it easier for fetishistic men to evade safeguarding.

What could go wrong?

(Yes I'm livid)

Wherewerewerewear · 19/05/2024 22:18

Oh dear. They Really don’t want our vote.

If we’re not voting Labour who are we voting for?

Voting anybody but the tories is a wasted vote at this point in time.

So choices seem to be:

Labour - no
Don’t vote / spoil vote - maybe
Tory - it’s a maybe too I’m afraid.

This is Labour’s doing. They are accountable if the Tories win again.

As things stand, pending appeal, any man with a GRC is legally a woman. If they start handing GRCs out like candy, it's game over.

It is time for the major women's rights organisations with good links to parliamentarians to start pushing for repeal of the GRA altogether. To date only KPSS has done so. The others have shied away considering it strategically a step too far, but we really need to build on recent advances and bring this into the frame now.

southbiscay · 19/05/2024 22:25

The trouble is that Labour are so far ahead in the polls they can afford to do this. They also know they're losing the rainbow vote after Cass etc and have to be seen to give something back. It's impossible to dish GRCs out and at the same time protect single sex spaces.

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 19/05/2024 22:26

Bastards

They're going to be wondering why they didn't get the landslide they thought they would🙄

The marriage thing is so internally inconsistent; if they think these men are suddenly women then the contract of marriage has totally changed. The only reason must be to trap women in abusive marriages against their will 🤬

Perhaps we need JK Rowling to advocate for repeal because she’s had a significant effect on changing the view of a lot of middle class women’s rights campaigners on the politeness of pronoun use; they were keen on accommodating pronoun usage until JKR began her free speech campaign against the Scottish hate crime legislation and began advocating for the ability to describe men as men.

Helleofabore · 19/05/2024 22:37

So nothing new then. This is what they have been saying for a while isn’t it? Despite some people wishing to convince us otherwise.

Sigh!

Removing the spousal exit clause will be unlawful. You can't divorce someone that no longer exists as a legal entity, and the Govt has no right to trap women in a marriage.
They also need to explain how child maintenance and other legal issues will be calculated.

Boiledbeetle · 19/05/2024 22:47

There is honestly hardly any difference between getting your GP to sign off and self ID. There will be plenty of GPs who will add it to the list of things they charge £50 for and not ask any questions. Or they'll sign off on it because they don't fancy being accused of being transphobic!

"would not allow people to self-identify in order to obtain legal changes."

But it's all self-identity!

Absolutely right on the marriage contract. But I admit that I didn’t see this until it was pointed out to me. I wonder if there is already any recourse to law based on the unilateral breaking of the contract, other than divorce.

WallaceinAnderland · 19/05/2024 22:49

Aaaaand there it is. Just as we suspected. The crumbs thrown to women were just that.

Metrictum · 19/05/2024 22:51

I wonder if this is a smokescreen. It won’t be suitable for a GP (service is on its arse due to hugely overwhelming demand already) so it will be a gender doc so in the end just minimises the process a bit but there is still a process ie it’s not total self ID.

But it appeases the trans ideologues whilst in fact the country is finally, thankfully moving away from seeing gender as important and starting to recognise biological sex even when a GRC is held. It’s so clear this is where the vast majority of the public actually lie and no political party can ignore that if they want votes.

So I retain a tiny bit of hope that this is just an appeasement and there will actually be less power in a GRC as the country finally moves back to sex as the determinant of services and sports etc.

Wherewerewerewear · 19/05/2024 22:53

GP’s are online, signing sick notes for £45. They’ll also sign self id (or ‘GRC’ confirmations whatever bollocks) for £45.

illinivich · 19/05/2024 22:57

Thank god all of the labour feminist had a seat at the table, and were watching our backs...

They say they are committed to single sex service, though. So I'll be interested how they intend to strengthen those spaces and services while giving men easier access to female birth certificates.

Can't believe they are ignoring the wives and husbands in the policies. It shows that they have little understanding of the situation.
