Co-edited by Lucy Hunter Blackburn and Susan Dalgety.

Comes out in a fortnight:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Women-Who-Wouldnt-Wheesht/dp/1408720701/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Evn51TzBTQrJe9b9GbEHyEFxl2MMln5spNZq8KWlzZA.Z6MAj1OSoGOZ1ctUF1Qr819FGWFktyVV0qkMp_0q3pc&dib_tag=se&keywords=the+women+who+wouldn%27t+wheesht&qid=1715848364&sr=8-1

"On the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, this book captures an important moment in contemporary history: how a grassroots women's movement, harking back to the suffragettes and second wave feminists of the 1970s and 1980s, took on the political establishment - and changed the course of history.

Through a collection of over thirty essays and photographs, some of the women involved tell the story of the five-year campaign to protect women's sex-based rights. Author J.K. Rowling explains why she used her global reach to stand up for women. Leading SNP MP Joanna Cherry writes of how she risked her political career for her beliefs. Survivors of male violence who MSPs refused to meet are given the voice they were denied at Holyrood. Ash Regan MSP recounts what it was like to become the first government minister to resign on a question of principle since the SNP came to power in 2007. Former prison governor Rhona Hotchkiss charts how changes in prison policy in Scotland led to the controversy over Isla Bryson.

It is the story of women who risked their job, reputation, even the bonds of family and friendship, to make their voices heard, and ended up - unexpectedly - contributing to the downfall of Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's first woman first minister."

Features essays from JKR and others.

I’ve pre-ordered a copy to come to my Kindle: I couldn’t wait until July for the paperback, but cost of the hardback was just too much more to try to find. But a kindle version I can read anywhere I have my phone, so 🤷‍♀️

Boiledbeetle · 16/05/2024 09:54

Let's try again!

Congratulations to everyone involved with the book. I'll be buying a copy.

Amazing stuff. To be a bestseller I expect the incredible story of how women took on the state and won.

Also should be noted that Constable the publishers are acting bravely by putting these women in print. This is at a time when the authors of Transmania are facing death threats in Paris and they cannot get a UK publisher.

UK publishers were too scared top put out Helen's book Trans a few years ago now the tide has turned great statement:

Constable publishing director Andreas Campomar said: “These women risked their jobs and reputations, not to say their friendships and family ties, to speak out. "The contributors in this book show how a climate was created, one in which true political change could occur. These are the women who wouldn't wheesht.”

morningtoncrescent62 · 16/05/2024 11:30

This looks amazing. I'm going to order it from my local bookshop, try and get them to stock a few copies.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 16/05/2024 11:39

Looking forward to this.

MinorDisaster · 16/05/2024 12:13

Buying new books is obviously the best way to support authors but I've used up my book buying budget for a bit (wish I'd known about this one yesterday), but what I'm going to do is put in orders for it in the two county library services I belong to and ask them to get copies. Then I'll borrow from both. Libraries will stock books if they know there's a demand so multiple requests for new ones are helpful. Nobody knows if you have already read the book or even own a copy yourself.

Even if you can't afford to buy books, getting them onto public library shelves puts the writing out there and adds to at least one more purchase per county, although it may take time. And, in the UK at least, named authors (and illustrators) may get small amounts from having their work borrowed (through PLR) and photocopied or broadcast (through ALCS).

This looks amazing. I have pre-ordered. And will look at how I can order this in my local library as well.

fromorbit · 17/05/2024 08:25

Book already at the top before it can be bought.

Susan Dalgety

Astonishing. The Women Who Wouldn’t Wheesht is no 1 in Amazon’s Movers and Shakers list and no 20 on their overall best seller list. Thanks to every one who has ordered a copy. And thanks to the women who shared their stories and pictures with us. Sisterhood and solidarity

Igmum · 17/05/2024 10:41

Brilliant! Hopefully publishers will realise that there's a massive contrast in sales between us book-buying Terfy ones and the disastrous sales most trans books have had and will follow the money. I'm going to pre-order too, let's keep it on the top sellers' list.

Susan Dalgety

When I was 8 and dreaming of being a writer I never, ever envisaged that one day a book I had co-edited would be the #1 hot new release in Law books - 2 of the top 3 in fact (Kindle sales says my co-editor LucyHunterB

Well it's definitely not me (wasn't asked 😔 which is probably a wise choice it would have been a chapter on the best brand of cat food and how to keep your cat happy)

It's someone I know! I'm very excited for them!
