Co-edited by Lucy Hunter Blackburn and Susan Dalgety.

Comes out in a fortnight:

"On the 25th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament, this book captures an important moment in contemporary history: how a grassroots women's movement, harking back to the suffragettes and second wave feminists of the 1970s and 1980s, took on the political establishment - and changed the course of history.

Through a collection of over thirty essays and photographs, some of the women involved tell the story of the five-year campaign to protect women's sex-based rights. Author J.K. Rowling explains why she used her global reach to stand up for women. Leading SNP MP Joanna Cherry writes of how she risked her political career for her beliefs. Survivors of male violence who MSPs refused to meet are given the voice they were denied at Holyrood. Ash Regan MSP recounts what it was like to become the first government minister to resign on a question of principle since the SNP came to power in 2007. Former prison governor Rhona Hotchkiss charts how changes in prison policy in Scotland led to the controversy over Isla Bryson.

It is the story of women who risked their job, reputation, even the bonds of family and friendship, to make their voices heard, and ended up - unexpectedly - contributing to the downfall of Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's first woman first minister."

Features essays from JKR and others.

"Still up there! (and 25th in hot new releases, all books) Thank-you to everyone who has pre-ordered already and to all our authors - looking forward very much to being able name them all on publication day on 30 May."

I don't want to wish away time, especially now there's an election in six weeks, but I can't wait for it to be 30th May!

Me too. Joanna Cherry’s going to be busy so I hope they weren’t booking her to talk about the book on Lorraine.

You are very well connected, then! Maybe she’ll sign your copy?

I have friends in low places! And she'd better!

Humphhhh · 29/05/2024 06:21

What does wheesht mean?

Igneococcus · 29/05/2024 06:27

It's used in the sense of "to shut up" or "be quiet" in Scotland and I think probably Ireland too.

TwirlBar · 29/05/2024 10:09

Yes, used in the same sense in Ireland (be quiet or silent). Pronounced Whisht here. I haven't heard it for a while but my grandmother used to say 'whisht', usually when as children we were being noisy while she wanted ho listen to the news on tv or radio.
The expression 'Hold your whisht' means stay silent too.

TwirlBar · 29/05/2024 10:23

With hold often pronounced hauld in this instance, ie 'hauld your whisht'.

334bu · 29/05/2024 10:30

I look forward to going into my local Waterstones and asking for this book and if it is not on display asking why not.

Boiledbeetle · 29/05/2024 10:38

I'm going to be checking my Amazon account all day tomorrow to see when my copy is getting delivered.

But us women of mumsnet can have a little moment of "that's us that is"... Look what is on the customers also bought suggestions... Our poems! 😁

My amazon order is showing as 'delivered tomorrow by 11pm' and I'm praying it's earlier than that so I don't go into work on Friday wabbit after reading into the night!

And all hail the poems!

NitroNine · 29/05/2024 12:10

@TwirlBar
We’d be whishted if our granny thought we were being too loud - & my wee sister now “whist!”s her own children 😁

theDudesmummy · 29/05/2024 12:14

I also got those Amazon recommendations when ordering the book, and I've ordered the Victoria Smith as well.

Mines still not dispatched. I'm hating the fact people have already had their copies delivered days before release! I have massive FOMO right now!

(I suspect the also bought of UTDOD are historic sales rather than new ones)

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 29/05/2024 13:23

Just got a text - my copy has arrived in the local bookshop!

That's the bookshop I went to in response to the stupid message from Literary Alliance Scotland telling bookshops not to stoclk TERF-y books (a message they quickly rescinded but wtf were they even thinkng of!)

SarahPedersen · 29/05/2024 13:30

Well, you might find a few mentions of Mumsnet in the book…..!

Boiledbeetle · 29/05/2024 13:33

And the list of contributers is out!

"It's publication day tomorrow for The Women Who Wouldn't Wheesht, so at last we can reveal the list of wonderful women who turned this book from a dream into a reality. @LucyHunterB and I say big thank you sisters for your solidarity, but most of all for your courage. And @Dis_Critic for coining the best campaign slogan ever #WomenWontWheesht"

I think you will be familiar with much of what I have written on the subject, so no nasty surprises!
