I wonder if they realise what they’ve done by asking for pregnant people, but also their mums…

Tokenism, nothing more, nothing less.

Please post and call out their transphobia in not asking for pregnant people and their birthing parents.

Please.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 03/05/2024 18:56

Dear me, are you assuming their mums' gender?! Their mums might only have been assigned female at birth.

Helleofabore · 03/05/2024 20:05

😁

Ah - Saw the title and thought this was another Billy Bragg thread 🤷‍♀️

I'd rather that some people think my efforts to welcome people as they are are nonsense than remain closed hearted and never try.

I don’t welcome men into women’s single-sex spaces. I am a kind person.

Anyone who welcomes men into women’s spaces is unkind to the many women who have been harmed or traumatised by men, or who simply need privacy.

All of it.
I don’t think you’ve actually grasped what the issue with the advert is.

You're all laughing at the fact they used 'pregnant people' and then used 'Mums,' right?

To which neither of your responses make the slightest sense 🤷🏻‍♀️

You can't push members of the public who are minding their own business out of a public place. People who have traumatic memories cannot request that when in public they never encounter anyone resembling the person that memory is associated with. If you need privacy, you find somewhere private, not public. (I'm talking about people simply co-existing in public here, not harassment or someone insisting you engage with them or someone filming you, for example. That kind of privacy should be afforded anywhere. That's basic respect.)

It does. I recognise and value the effort regardless of how consistent it is. I think people who read it recognise the hand extended to those who don't fit in a neat box, they don't obsess over the language. Acceptance and kindness is what comes across, and that is what is important.

It doesn’t, actually.

Yes that’s right

so please explain why it’s not birthing people and their birthing parent? I mean if we’re being all kind and inclusive

Because there's nothing wrong with the word Mum, they only needed to use people once to signal that they are not excluding people who fall outside of that term. It worked. It signalled that to me. And to you guys or you wouldn't be upset about it.

StarlightLime · 04/05/2024 18:56

Some people just don't get irony.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 04/05/2024 19:02

If you fall outside of that term, which is women, would you be pregnant? Given you apparently don't identify that way. And being pregnant is something only females can do.

It's nonsense and most people see it for what it is. It's not inclusive to start changing language which excludes 'women'.

Or it signals that the people writing that ad are utter fuckwits who don’t even understand the language they’re banging about so clumsy

I couldn’t give a flying fuck what gender ppl identify as because gender stereotypes are regressive made up bollocks imposed on us by society

but only women give birth and the word for an adult human female who is pregnant is woman and the word for someone who has given birth is mother or mum

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 04/05/2024 19:03

People and then mothers doesn't even make sense.

Okay. I care most about loving people well and trying to understand them, personally.

But not female people. Their feelings and concerns don’t matter to you because you’d rather virtue-signal to a tiny deluded minority so you can pretend you’re being #kind.
