Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I.”

Honestly. If you need an expert to tell you who's a woman mate, you're in more trouble than you think.

In fairness, the quote in bold was made by him immediately after JKR “came out” and released her essay.

His more recent quote admitted that he wouldn’t have his current life if it wasn’t for JKR, but that won’t stop him having his own opinions. And that he loves the LGBT community blah blah blah. Slightly less militant, as I’d expect given Cass.

OnlyLoveCanBreakYourHeart · 01/05/2024 13:44

Funny how all these men are so certain that TWAW but you never see them dating one do you?

DialSquare · 01/05/2024 13:46

Can't wait for the new Harry Potter series so a new generation of young actors can be associated with it.

The movies are so beloved because of the ensemble of excellent adult actors, the SFX and set designs and most importantly the narrative brilliance which was all down to...guess who...JK Rowling.

Aren’t they remaking them for an HBO TV series? At which point there will be a new “Harry” (and others) and Dan is going to be even less relevant as “the old Harry that couldn’t act”.

Yep and I believe JKR is heavily involved :-)

is Radcliffe a nepo baby?

I believe his parents worked as casting directors and put him forward for the Harry Potter film. It wasn't his first acting role. He played Pip in a BBC adaptation of Great Expectations not long before that and I thought he was quite good in that part.

His girlfriend is a woman. Always has been a woman. It’s a horrible theory based on the fact that in some photos, she doesn’t always look beautiful. Women don’t have to be perfect and feminine and beautiful from every angle every second.

I was about to post the same point.

I can't access that Rolling Stone link but the full article is in The Atlantic.

I found it a bit tricky to disentangle what he's said in the past from what he's saying now, but I think I'd describe his current stance as trying to swerve the question rather than doubling down. Hopefully this archive link will work:

I’d be very surprised if he actually understood the Cass report or knew what was going on or followed any of it. He probably only knows the snippets he hears journalists use if he is questioned on it, and I doubt he understands what they’re saying.

I’m sure he, or more likely his publicist, is aware that all it turns out that it’s not all glitter and happy feels with regards child transition and even the British left are starting to catch up.

The difference in tone between his two statements are very telling.

theDudesmummy · 01/05/2024 14:00

OK, well I take back what I said re surrogacy then. He's still a little twerp.

BiggerBoat1 · 01/05/2024 14:04

I find all the hate a bit sad. He's expressing an opinion, just as JKR does. You may not agree with him, but the personal insults are a bit childish.

YukNo · 01/05/2024 14:06

He’s always come across in interviews as supremely thick and very dull. Also he can’t act.

Dineasair · 01/05/2024 14:08

SidewaysOtter · 01/05/2024 12:40

Apparently he hasn’t spoken with JKR for years. I’m sure she’s gutted, given his bleatings Hmm

Interesting that they included her scathing quote, I was quite surprised by that.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 01/05/2024 13:17

I feel that the statement "trans women are women" erases the identity and dignity of women, who actually need and are allowed to have words and spaces for themselves which don't include members of the opposite sex.

It's very notable that Radcliffe simply said "no comment" to the women's rights angle. He's made it clear who he cares about, and it's not women.

Cosmosforbreakfast · 01/05/2024 14:10

Silly little boy. No one would even know who he was if he hadn't been Harry Potter. All this guff is getting him sort of publicity I suppose. He needs it.

Has she enough expertise for him?

theDudesmummy · 01/05/2024 14:14

I don't hate him. Who could be bothered? I just find his ridiculous and rude behaviour irritating.

I have a lot more expertise about this than he does and he's mistaken on all counts - apart from the advice given by US professional healthcare associations which as we now know is all based on circular referencing.

Oh well.

It'll be the wrong sort of expertise, it doesn't prioritise men over women so not worth listening to

"Waah! She's a transphobic moron, who excluded a thousand papers and only used 2. She doesn't know anything about trans people!" (continues for a further 17 pages...)

Oh give over with the accusations of hate.

No-one here is “hating” Radcliffe, they’re criticising what he says and does, his hypocrisy for earning his money from Harry Potter but slating its creator, and for his attitudes towards women.

Discourse isn’t split into adulation and hate Hmm

The Cass report didn’t go down the affirmation-only existence-validating route and therefore it’s undoubtedly transphobic. Or something.

Can we stop with the nonsense about having to fawn over a creator just because you got work by them?

If JK had come out as a racist, no one would expect the Harry Potter cast to stand by her just because he made money from her creation.

You don’t have to support someone just because you worked because of them. You are not beholden to them for life.

By all means, disagree with him because of his opinion but stop all the shouting about how he should be on someone’s side because he made a bunch of money from their work.

Lots of people made money because of working for Jimmy Saville… should they continue supporting him? It’s the same principle. It doesn’t matter that we are on JK’s side, no one needs to be on someone’s side just because they had a job from that person.

He's been called dull, thick a little boy and a nepo baby on this thread. I'd call that hate, but if you're ok with that kind of language we'll have to agree to differ.

I'd also say he's probably allowed to have a difference of opinion from JKR even though he's made money from Harry Potter. Its not as if he's said her storytelling is rubbish. I don't understand how you can defend JKR's right to an opinion, but deny his.

Of course you can disagree with him, but do so with a little integrity and present a valid argument and you'll be taken more seriously. Just calling him a child or spitefully saying he can't act doesn't convince me that you have anything to bring to this discussion.

SinnerBoy · 01/05/2024 14:39

I see it as derision, rather than hate.
