He said he apologises to people eating their breakfast'. Hmm

He is being questioned about his treatment of Rosie Duffield but he's not answered really and moved the convo swiftly to Brianna Ghey

Susannah said you told the MP Rosie Duffield that she is wrong to say only women have a cervix and he is again deflecting.

Says he believes in safe spaces for women.

Women's prisons? - deflects again to the NHS today. no answer to any direct questions.

Says again about safe spaces being important- but again deflecting and whittering about the constituion

SR asking for clarity- is it right or wrong for RD to say only women have a cervix - KS- she is biologically right. SR- should you apologise to her?
KS- deflects. Wants discussion. Not answering the question.

I'm giving up now. He can't even string a coherent sentence together. Keeps deflecting.

IMO of course.

You may not be aware of the current case relating to Brighton Rape Crisis centre survivors network then.

One transwoman attended. And wasn't bearded - but was wearing trousers. I hadn't realised transwomen weren't allowed to wear trousers.

You're a better parent than me if you've never made mistakes like that.

You've got to be joking 😂
What he said was completely bizarre under any circumstances. What next, is he going to refer to his husband, forgetting he's married to a woman? It's about as likely as forgetting you have a son and a daughter.

Flickersy · 30/04/2024 15:25

Scurrilous gossip about how KS' child identifies has quite rightly had threads shut down before now. If you want this thread to stay up it would be best to drop it. It's completely inappropriate.

Loveveggies · 30/04/2024 15:26

Wow such animosity towards Kier Starmer over an issue the majority of the population don't have the time, energy or intellectual space to worry about. If you'd prefer the government we're now lumbered with, god help us all.

Like I say, you're a better person than me if you've never made similar mistakes.

Luckily, my mistakes tend aren't on a national level in front of media.

but hey, at least he admits to how many children he has ;)

Kucinghitam · 30/04/2024 15:15

Agreed. The family members of public figures should be left alone and not dragged out for discussion and speculation. Particularly children.

I suppose the flip side of that is, public figures, particularly politicians who will be in a position of power over the rest of us, should not be dragging the rest of us into their family dynamics.

I don't think he does drag the rest of us into his family dynamics. I am quite dull and like politics, he speaks about his childhood a lot but rarely his children or his wife.

His children should have privacy.

I am not a Starmer fan. But this feels like a real low attack. I think we need to think about where this coming from and who benefits from this.

I called my son the name of my female childhood dog last week.

Luckily it was amongst friends, and everyone found it funny, and no one got their pearls in a twist thinking my son was identifying as a female dog.

I call my boy son, my female dog's name, and vice versa!

That is a whole other issue though. That is about (probably men) finding ANY excuse to deny a woman the right to report a rape.

combattywombatty · 30/04/2024 15:33

@justteanbiscuits

I'm afraid you are wrong the explicitly said that she couldn't have been raped because there were no men in the ward.
Please show me another case where a woman has no been allowed to report a rape crime.

combattywombatty · 30/04/2024 15:34

@justteanbiscuits

Do you think the women who have lost out on sporting money and scholarships have a right to fair competition?

Calling someone by the wrong name is very different to forgetting what sex your own child is. As I said, it's akin to him referring to his wife as 'my husband' in an interview and not correcting himself and no less odd.

combattywombatty · 30/04/2024 15:36

one woman not having access to single sex rape crisis help is one too many.

Sports are different, and are being dealt with by each sports governing body. I am actually part of a group for my children's sports governing body on how to make it fair for amateur sport, not just high level. (I do actually go about trying to make positive change rather than just bitching on the internet).

But, Sports aren't law. Competing in sport isn't a right. I have lost no actual rights.

What hapens when a transman, who for all intents and purposes looks and acts like a man, uses the womens toilets? What happens when a butch woman gets attacked for using the womens toilets (which is happening). Yet, there has been no increase in women being attacked in 'women only' spaces.

Women are at risk from a small subset of men. Awful, hideous men. A transwoman is at much MUCH greater risk from men. Forcing a transwoman to use mens toilets would put them at very high risk of violence.

Oh, okay, sports don't matter. Women can just push over and make space for men - because many sports are taking their own sweet time to resolve this issue internationally, and meanwhile women have been injured and lost sponsorship and scholarships and been vilified for pointing this out. I'm not sure how long it would have taken to bring this issue to wider attention if women hadn't kicked up an almighty fuss, and been called bigots for doing so.

you have no idea what I do in my own time, so perhaps leave the snide digs out of it. If that wasn't a snide dig, perhaps consider how you phrase things, given that tone is difficult on the internet.

Such a person would be safe in the gents, surely? If they pass as male?

What happens when a butch woman gets attacked for using the womens toilets (which is happening).
A situation brought about by the insane situation we have now, where a bloke with a beard can claim he's a woman.

Yet, there has been no increase in women being attacked in 'women only' spaces. Prisons? Women's refuges?

Women are at risk from a small subset of men. Awful, hideous men. A transwoman is at much MUCH greater risk from men.
And once men can, with impunity, enter women's spaces, those 'Awful, hideous men' have a loophole through which they can stroll to access women in states of undress. I'm sorry, but this is men's issue to solve. I'm concerned with the wellbeing of women. If transwomen, rather than screaming 'BIGOT NO DEBATE!' for the last however many years, had allied themselves with feminists, understood our concerns and campaigned for third spaces, we might be somewhere different.

But we're not.

I have a friend who is so 'be kind' she spouts the Guardians/Labour line verbatim as soon as it comes out, and she was all 'but but Brianna!' for a while when I brought up the inconsistencies in the ideology, also Brianna's mum showing up in parliament as Sunak was making a statement on woman's rights.
I do think the Brianna Ghey tragedy was going to be Labour's trump card to shut down any GC speak, it does not seem to have taken off like they hoped though.

I do think the Brianna Ghey tragedy was going to be Labour's trump card to shut down any GC speak, it does not seem to have taken off like they hoped though.

It’s only a trump card if they believe voters who are loving parents, or have some modicum of empathy and decency, think that a politician cynically using a horrific family tragedy in pursuit of their own political career goals is something ethical, decent and worthy of respect. And if their belief turns out to be correct.

If, however, very many parents and individuals with a modicum of decency are utterly disgusted by politicians who try to make political mileage out of a family tragedy, then it’s not a silencing technique in quite the way they were hoping for.

AboutYouTalk · 30/04/2024 15:38

Massive disappointment and another Tory dressed up as a Labour leader only he doesn’t lead, he practically agrees with most Tory policies. The fact that the conservatives and labour refuse to back a ceasefire and are friends of Israel tells me all I need to know.

Kandalama · 30/04/2024 15:40

With Labour highly likely to win the Election I am very worried for womens rights.
Not enough voters see Labours stance as a huge problem.

Im a floating voter so I’m waiting for some real change in Labours attitude to biological women. Conservative health secretary made a good statement today on women in hospitals and their rights to separate wards etc. Still waiting for Labour to come up with some concrete and positive answers though.

How did you take "Oh, okay, sports don't matter. Women can just push over and make space for men " from my post??

What I pushed for, and what has happened, is, regardless of age or level of sport, you can choose to complete in the category of your birth gender, or an open category.

What hapens when a transman, who for all intents and purposes looks and acts like a man, uses the womens toilets?
Such a person would be safe in the gents, surely? If they pass as male?
So trans women who pass as women can use the female toilets OK? It's only those that don't pass what you consider to be acceptable? And it's fine for butch women to be attacked / abused because it's caused by "by the insane situation we have now".

Yet, there has been no increase in women being attacked in 'women only' spaces.Prisons? Women's refuges?
I haven't looked at the statistics for prisons. But refuges, toilets etc no, no increase.

You realise that men don't have to claim to be women to enter womens spaces? There is no law preventing it happening. They can just walk in. They can say they're a cleaner, or a plumber (both have happened in recent years). or can just walk in. There is no law preventing this. There is no "right" for only women in womens toilets

combattywombatty · 30/04/2024 15:46

@justteanbiscuits

You might want to read actually research

"The researchers state:
‘male-to-females . . . retained a male pattern regarding criminality. The same was true regarding violent crime.’
MtF transitioners were over 6 times more likely to be convicted of an offence than female comparators and 18 times more likely to be convicted of a violent offence. The group had no statistically significant differences from other natal males, for convictions in general or for violent offending. The group examined were those who committed to surgery, and so were more tightly defined than a population based solely on self-declaration."
