Has she really blocked JKR or was that a joke on Twitter?

Aston going to have a field day with this one...

Thanks for your growing tips@AlisonDonut .Do you happen to have a picture of a second year beetroot in flower? I will try that pickle this year.

I don't, it isn't pretty but it smells amazing.

It looks like a huge amaranth, or love lies bleeding. Just with smaller leaves and more dreadlocky bits.

What a lovely description.

What a lovely description.

I genuinely don't know how else to describe it!

The stems because of the tiny flowers just look like long dreads. Some are about 6-8 foot long.

StealthSpinach · 25/04/2024 11:25

Roasted beetroot served with goats cheese is delish.

Beetroot hummus is gorgeous.

Beetroot and horseradish is delectable.

And 48 creme eggs!

I'd marvel at your restraint at not having eaten them all, but Cadbury's ruined creme eggs when they stopped making them with Dairy Milk. The bastards.

Coughs...It was 96! And I couldn't eat them for ages after they messed with the recipe, but I've got over that. They don't taste as good, but they do seem better tasting than when they first changed the recipe!

I love horseradish! Apparently you grow them from thongs Blush

I love horseradish too and yes, you do grow it from thongs but do not, I repeat: DO NOT plant it into a bed, keep it safely in a pot.

Took them all morning, quizzing me, working it out, and through alot of personal denial to work out that sugar is made from beetroot and all this time, they never knew.

Sugar beet isn't exactly beetroot, but pink sugar sounds cool!

I got as far as cold soup

Aww! Don't you even like Gestapo soup?

And do not, I repeat, DO NOT prepare it indoors. Peel and grate it in a plastic bag, too, unless you like 2 days of breathing difficulties!

FairyBreadQueen · 25/04/2024 12:06

Gestapo soup is pretty retro. 1940s I think. Grin

Love borscht myself but never quite managed it cold.

It's a riff on Marjorie Taylor-Green and her calling the Nazi secret police "The Gazpacho."

Anyway- I see beetroot crisps and raise you the classic Australian burger which usually contains a slice of pickled beetroot or pineapple- or with me both at the same time.

Yes, I was working in Darwin last year and was pleasantly surprised to find beetroot in burgers. You must pickle it differently, as I'm not really a fan of the stuff here.

Igneococcus · 25/04/2024 12:22

Yes, important point @SinnerBoy
I tried different ways of pickling beetroot last year, we had a glut, and the one which had hibiscus in the marinade was fabulous. I'll make that one again.

Yes I think it must be pickled differently because I do try and use beetroot in burgers (and salad sandwiches) here but it's not the same.

FairyBreadQueen · 25/04/2024 12:25

oooh! how was Darwin? i was last there in 1996 (I think) and was quite enchanted by it. But tiny and small and almost village-ey.

I made that mistake when I pickled some horseradish in about 2009. The jar is still in the cupboard and TBH I'm afraid to open it.

Well, inspired by the pickled eggs, I decided to go out and get some. Outrageously, they were £3.99 for 6! I've decided to make my own, cider vinegar & white vinegar, a dash of salt, paprika and a few pickling spice corns.

I thought it was quite large, I was staying on Knuckey Street and there was plenty nearby, the heat was a bit brutal for me. I went from near freezing to 33° and high humidity. I don't think I had a bad meal and loved the barramundi.

I went to Crocasaurus Cove, it was fantastic. I bought my (then 10 year old daughter a crocodile bucket hat, after asking size advice from a young woman assistant, who was from Buckinghamshire.

I got back and gave it to her, whereupon it turned out that it was for a baby!

You’re trying to distract us with your talk
of Australian holidays, candy striped varietals and goats cheese.

We shall not be swayed.

It tastes like dirt and the only reason it’s faintly tolerable with goats cheese is that the goats cheese mostly drowns it out.

I’ve grown 3 varieties. I’ve tried it roasted, baked, picked, raw, in salads, in dips, in cakes and in soups. I have given the damned stuff every opportunity and advantage possible.

It still tastes like dirt.

I have more of an issue with the goat's cheese. It's all...goaty.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 25/04/2024 14:50

I make a lovely yoghurt based gratin with beetroot and feta cheese, after having similar on holiday on a Greek island a few years ago. Quite fancy it now!

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 25/04/2024 14:54

I've had Turkish yoghurt and beetroot dip a few times and it's delicious.

Goats cheese is tolerable if it's been rolled in herbs and stored in olive oil for a while, but I've never bought any and just ate some I was given. Even then I only ate it because I like the goats who provided the milk.
