Take it away, Dawn!

https://twitter.com/roseveniceallan/status/1782430988066312639

'Mr Speaker, I was quoting Stonewall's briefing, and there was some fallout from this, I've spent the weekend in conversation with Stonewall and Dr Cass.

'Mr Speaker, by quoting this briefing, it seems I may have inadvertently misled the House'.

I feel a bit mean putting this here, Gillian Keegan's ferret seems to have reversed a little while ago. But I don't want to start a new thread so

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/04/24/gillian-keegan-will-stop-saying-trans-women-are-women/

https://archive.ph/Ta5m4

I do find the headline rather comical.

Eh, I said hello to her yesterday, didn't get the chance to pin her down on gender tho.

I think that there will be a lot of people, post Cass, who say “I was misled/I didn’t have all the info” who will change their tune, but as they’ve spent so long slagging off feminists for pointing all this out they will feel unable to accept they are the same as the majority of posters here now. So they will point out that of course it’s wrong to give unevidenced medication to minors- absolute common sense- but those TERFs and bigots over there were only ever using this as an excuse for their hatred of trans people, it’s just coincidence they were right and it can’t possibly be that any animosity towards TRAs and lobbyists is out of anger towards their cavalier attitude towards children’s health. It’s just lucky for them they accidentally were right, not like me, I’ve only ever been in this for all our trademarked Lovely Trans Friends and our Little Trans Kiddos in our constituencies etc etc blah do fucking blah.

There was a whiff of this on the Private Eye podcast that touched on puberty blockers. “I am clever and can see this is terrible, you on the other hand are fortunate that the evidence justifies your horrible bigotry.”

Its all a bit “I’m still right side of history, you’re still the baddies.”

Years ago on here someone posted that when things start to crumble the feminists will still be blamed. They were not wrong.

We see this all the time here, particularly about American conservatives. It's all "they don't really care about women's safe spaces, or children being medically abused, they are just using that stuff as an excuse because they hate trans people."

They can't just care about it for the same normal reasons as everybody else, I suppose it's because they are too Evil.

Good to see unequivocal statements about women and women's rights. I'm glad that Gillian Keegan changed her mind.

Rather weird digs at Victoria Atkins, though. So what if she met and talked to Stonewall? Lobby groups are entitled to promote their cause. What should not then happen is what seems to have happened with Stonewall's MPs contacts - ie the MPs suspended critical thinking and surrendered decision-making to the lobby group. And they spoke only to Stonewall. As an MP and even more as a minister, what you should do is listen to a range of views, and then make up your own mind.

I have to say it's rather refreshing when politicians actually admit to having got something wrong.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 23/04/2024 17:32

She did lie then. You can’t just say ‘whoopsy my bad’. She is supposed to be an honest person.

She was spreading disinformation, in my opinion crafty enough to be using/abusing parliamentary privilege under which to do so.

There is no excuse for an MP to be repeating any old falsehood in Parliament.

ArabellaScott · 26/04/2024 16:24

Reports from X that Caroline Nokes has been having a clear out of old Tweets. Specifically those relating to 'trans'.

That doesn't show the text. Try this:

However, it looks like Private Eye, as part of its own clean-up operation, is going with the "it was the Tories' fault" narrative. The mess most definitely didn't start with Maria Miller. She was an enabler, hopefully out of self-serving ignorance rather than malice, but the juggernaut was well underway at the point she got involved:

'Anas Sarwar on Scottish gender recognition act - self ID - on PM (around 5.14pm onwards).

Evan Davies: "Would you still vote for that bill knowing everything you know now?"

Anas Sarwar: "No."'

Don't be daft, those splinters are stuck so far up his arse he will need removing from the fence surgically.

Problem is he just wants to be the bland inoffensive (women don't count - obviously) candidate because there's no way he's getting beaten by the Tories - it's extremely unedifying.

He's just offensive for not recognising reality which is thoroughly illiberal and authoritarian.

It's not a good look. And it's not bland.

It's a statement in its own right to say women are unimportant and safeguarding is unimportant. The only thing that is important is my career.

Could you explain what's happening, I'm not on X

Ferrets and ferreting is what happens when previously TWAW diehards realise that not only is the rubbish they have been spouting misinformed, dangerous and downright impossible but that post Cass the tide is turning and they are in danger of getting stuck in the quicksand if they don’t do a hasty u turn.

It is fun to watch.

Signalbox · 27/04/2024 10:29

Presumably some of these MPs who say TWAW will have “trans identified” children or friends or family members.

Personally I’ve gone from knowing zero people who claim to be trans (in my entire life) to 4 within the last 5 years. I imagine this is a phenomenon that many people are experiencing.

It’s going to be much more difficult for MPs who do have friends / family to back away from this when the reaction to admitting you know TWAW is sometimes extreme (breaking off friendships, going no contact, publicly being called a bigot etc.)

ApocalipstickNow · 27/04/2024 10:33

Well it’s certainly going to be awkward when some trans people find out their cheerleader friends didn’t actually believe TWAW/TMAM after all

IcakethereforeIam · 27/04/2024 10:42

Previous poster made me curious

This is the type of stuff I'm prepared to 'trust' Wikipedia on, fairly inconsequential if it turns out to be bollocks.

In reality trans activists already know that people don’t believe TWAW.

It’s just a power game; getting people to say something out loud you know they don’t believe, achieved by making life unpleasant for those who refuse to pretend. If there were zero unpleasant consequences 99% of people would never say TWAW. If people believed TWAW there would be no need for unpleasant consequences.

sashagabadon · 27/04/2024 10:48

Private Eye clearly doing their own “ reverse ferret” a phase they populised!
infuriating to blame it all on Maria miller though when it is labour mp’s that have been most pro gender ideology. Tories have been much more ignore and hope it goes away.
remember Boris saying mid covid pandemic that only a man has a penis and everyone was outraged!

It's not being a good friend to stuff them full of affirmation and lies.

If your friends and family care then THEY won't break contact.

No one ever turns it the other way around.

nauticant · 27/04/2024 10:50

Will this be the historical precedent for how Private Eye does its reverse ferret?

Exactly. It's manipulative.

Would you stand similar from other people? No.

So why do people put up with this type of abusive behaviour.

nauticant · 27/04/2024 11:08

One part of this that I think is often neglected is that there are people about who get a huge thrill from having the power to make others say things they completely disagree with and having to say it through gritted teeth is a distressing experience for them.
