Here's literal proof that the joking was invalid:

Well this has literally convinced me.

Hislop is a typical man’s man. He is funny and clever, but also doesn’t really see women, I don’t think. They just don’t really register.

Violetparis · 20/04/2024 09:02

Was pleasantly suprised to hear this on HIGNFY, just read on twitter that Alexander Armstrong signed the letter in support of JKR.

SidewaysOtter · 20/04/2024 09:37

WeirdButFuckingBeautiful · 20/04/2024 08:27

Yes, Hislop was a bit of a crush of mine for years because he is so sharp and smart and funny. Not so much now because of the swerve to avoid anything on this, bar the odd cartoon in PE. If anything is ripe for skewering it is gender ideology.

I’ve always thought of Hislop as the thinking woman’s crumpet 🙂

I KNEW Alexander was a good egg and I’m very pleased to see that confirmed!

highame · 20/04/2024 09:44

The new thinking woman's crumpet is Andrew Doyle. He's been GC forever and outspokenly so and also very funny

They all got very giddy immediately afterwards - hysterical relief at having got away with it, perhaps.

You haven't watched HIGNFY before, have you?

FrancescaContini · 20/04/2024 09:50

I’ve always thought AA was “a bit of all right” and now I know he signed the letter in support of JKR, he’s gone up in my estimation 🥰

GoldenTrout · 20/04/2024 10:03

I keep having to remind myself that Hislop has been Private Eye editor for 38 years and HIGNFY started when the Soviet Union still existed. Living off past glories comes to mind.

Past glories? Hislop and Private Eye are riding very high at the moment courtesy of having spent years doggedly pursuing the Post Office story whilst all around were ignoring it, to say nothing of ongoing work on things like the Teesside development and infected blood scandals. Both PE and HIGNFY are widely recognised as having done brilliant work on all the political shenanigans of the last few years.

I don’t disagree, I just wish they’d covered the gender ideology/GIDS issue too. It is the sort of thing they WOULD cover - the medical scandal if not the women’s rights angle - so I really can’t see why they didn’t.

You've got to think then about their glaring blind spot regarding women and children. How has such a risible ideology captured so many public institutions under the satirists without a peep?

crumpet · 20/04/2024 10:19

It’s been so long since I last watched it I had no idea the introduction had changed

That’s the 64 million dollar question isn’t it! Private eye have taken on all sorts of difficult issues over the years and don’t mind seeing ppl in court

yet on gender ideology capturing pretty much every institution and public body in the UK barely a peep

Have they got trans staff and even PE got captured? I can’t imagine them falling for the EDI grift.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/04/2024 10:55

Honestly Sideways I just don’t Ian hislop is interested in it as an issue

I think he sees it as just women being hysterical and it’s really no big deal

DewinDwl · 20/04/2024 11:02

It looks like it, doesn't it @Theeyeballsinthesky ?

Hislop went down greatly in my estimation with the way we talked about Alistair Capmbell when Campbell opened up about his struggles with depression.

LlynTegid · 20/04/2024 11:04

I think Ian Hislop has to think what the BBC will not cut out, given the level of editing of the show from the recording that takes place.

With the bbc yes given how captured it is
is

But he doesn’t need to do that in his own magazine

It's safe now.

Quite.

hoteltango · 20/04/2024 11:20

HIGNFY is owned?/produced by Hat Trick Productions, which is the same organisation that produced Father Ted. Glinner has said that the Father Ted Musical rights are held by Hat Trick Productions which won't allow the musical to be produced. Presumably because of Glinner's views.

It's always been very much a boys' club. Sometimes a woman like Helen Lewis might be accepted as an honorary one of the boys.

Whenever I hear of a famous man speaking out like this, I google to see who they’re married, as I assume they’re doing so because they value their wife’s opinion.

"And why not, now cancer's been cured and everything."

Yes. I liked that.

LouisaGuy · 20/04/2024 11:54

Twas good to hear. Hopefully the tide is turning

WhereAreWeNow · 20/04/2024 17:09

Glad to see it. Pretty sure both Jo Brand and Alexander Armstrong are terfy. It's good to finally break the taboo. This subject is so ripe for ridicule and satire.
