Yes, I expect the risk is a new Sec of State for Scotland who is in favour of GRR and willing to strike down the Section 35.

And then what happens when the laws conflict?

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 03/05/2024 12:41

I think striking down the section 35 would be very bad for Labour politically in Scotland (if you want the union vote you should preserve the union surely?)- I think it's more likely they might put similar law in place in rUK & therefore remove the conflict.

That's the worst possible outcome for all British women.

Really?

That would be terrible

😰

I'm afraid you're probably correct.

Yes it definitely is, I'm not proposing it!!!

I just think it's the more likely outcome than reversing the section 35. Especially if they wait until after the Scottish parliament elections when Holyrood is likely to have a much stronger Labour presence- united union under Labour.... Women equally utterly fucked either sided of the border.

maltravers · 03/05/2024 20:52

Maybe Starmer will see it’s unpopular in Scotland and leave well alone. I can’t imagine he’s looking at the gender wars in Scotland and thinking “I’d like more of that” . I guess there will be some sort of placating concessions though…

IANAL, but I think they'd have to amend the Equality Act, which would be quite a big deal.

More of a risk, I think, is that Labour amend or replace the GRA in some way that doesn't quite bring in self-ID, but that makes the threshold so low that it effectively does. I think GC women calling for the repeal of the GRA need to be careful what they wish for, tbh, because they are handing Labour an excuse to do this.

Yes -I agree, I didn't mean by using the same mechanism as ScotParl but the same outcome.

(although I still want the GRA repealed but as you say don't want it replaced with something worse 🙈)

(IANAL either)

Imagine thinking harming children is a good idea. What on earth is wrong with these people? Labour really need to get their act together on child safe guarding.

This is the adult equivalent of a toddler sticking her fingers in her ears and shouting 'LALALALALA I ARE NOT HEARING YOU!'

I doubt that Starmer has even considered the issues. Anyone with half a brain can see the problems (eg placing males in female prisons, the unfairness of males in female sport, plain and simple biological facts etc) once they look. And once seen, they cannot be unseen.

When Labour gets into power, changes will happen with deals being done behind closed doors. Stonewall-influenced laws will be brought in whether we like it or not - or so they expect. We will need more than ever, a free press and the politicians who are speaking up, and of course, freedom of speech and this precious website.

SaffronSpice · 04/05/2024 09:50

Starmer admitted Rosie was right but he threw her to the wolves because it was ‘toxic’

The BBC news site is showing a headline from the Scottish Post saying "Former party leader says misogynistic Greens rushed into gender reform laws", with the sub-header "Harper hits out at sidelining of party's women", quoting Robin Harper.

Interesting.

I've been intrigued by the Sunday Post over the past few months and see that it has had a new editor since last year, Dave Lord.

Ex-leader: Scottish Greens engulfed in misogyny over gender reforms

Robin Harper reveals he was hauled in front of a conduct committee for trying to delay gender reforms until more was known about the risks.

Good for the Sunday Post. When I was a child, we got it every week. I mostly remember The Broons and many, many articles on the lines of 'New ways with mince'. Times have changed!

Morwenscapacioussleeves · 05/05/2024 12:43

I find it interesting he's also identified just how unrealistic the "green" targets were.

"New ways with mince" 🤣🤣🤣
New mince just like the old mince applies to a lot of this stuff!

ArabellaScott · 05/05/2024 12:47

Robin Harper. Another good politician lost to this nonsense.

Indeed! I can't remember any of the old recipes, but I suspect they were on the lines of 'Boil mince with 1/4 tsp mild curry powder, an Oxo cube, a tin of baked beans and a handful of raisins, serve with rice boiled for half an hour'.

Waitwhat23 · 05/05/2024 14:53

The Sunday Post had never been on my radar, apart from for the Broons but they've been good on quite a few things lately. They led on the mesh scandal afaicr and have done some good investigative journalism.
