Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Kucinghitam · 16/04/2024 12:11

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Ahhh, but they identify, quite successfully, most people just can't tell, as beetles. And yep definitely trying to impersonate Vincent Price that one!

There are virtually no shield bugs that successfully pass as beetles. Most people who say they do are just being kind.

Bugger, I'm going to be stuck with this one on this thread for over 800 posts. Unless I remember to edit it!

This is fascinating

Calico is American for tortoiseshell. I think you can, very rarely, get male tortoiseshell but they will always have a cat equivalent of a DSD. The ones I've seen pictures of were mostly white with a few small tortoiseshell patches.

Justine has had a letter published in the Guardian, putting the awful Stewart Lee right:

https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/commentisfree/article/2024/may/19/of-course-faith-has-a-place-in-our-society

Our pride in MumsnetStewart

Lee wrote that the location of his family home was posted on Mumsnet (“Context is vital. That’s why I’m filming everything I say and do from now on”). We have found and removed a reference to the general location of his house which, had it been reported at the time, would have been swiftly deleted in line with our forum guidelines. Regardless, his characterisation of Mumsnet as a “schools advice, recipes and hate site”, and his pejorative use of “furious old lady” is telling.

Mumsnet is the only large-scale social media platform in the UK run and used overwhelmingly by women. Our 9 million predominantly female users discuss pretty much every topic you can think of, from global politics to fashion, to yes – education and food. They also provide each other with invaluable support and advice – our own data shows that about 1,000 women a year are helped out of abusive relationships by other Mumsnet users. We don’t allow hate speech or personal attacks, but we are proud to provide a space where women can express their opinions on controversial topics, speak openly about their own experiences, and robustly criticise those who stereotype and diminish women.

Well said Justine. Also loved 'Genghis Khan is a liberal'. 😃

Yeah, to the left of Natalie Elphicke!

The judgment is excoriating re Mridul Wadhwa, the male who identifies as female who still runs Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre: for hounding a female employee and seeing sacking women as a legitimate way of achieving a gender ideology-compliant organisation. So: what next for him?

My walking route takes me through a small ginnel (alley/jitty/snicket) between two houses. One of the houses has recently installed a really smart-looking fence all along the length of the ginnel. Must have cost them a pretty packet.

This morning, I observed that somebody has spray-painted “NO TERFS, NO TORIES” on the fence.

Leaving aside the questionable wisdom of installing an expensive fence in a publicly-accessible location, the situation did make me eye-roll quite vigorously - just imagining the kind of Rainbow-Fart-Sniffing Right Side Of History Activist BeeeeeKind Warrior Of Goodness who thought they were striking a brilliant blow for Righteousness by vandalising some normal person’s household property.

Near a university? Seats of learning encourage this kind of behaviour these days, I gather.

Please tell me you've ordered a load of stickers to cover up the graffiti!

Just discovered I can listen to music on Spotify while fannying around on the interweb. A nice young lady tries to sell me bitcoin every now and again but not tempted so far.

Anyway, noticed this

This one is new to me, and, I don't know if it's me or if the article is badly written, but I can't work out wtf is going on.

I don’t really want to start a new thread so I’m not sure where to put this, but thought you might enjoy this excellent grilling of a US judge who put a violent pedophile rapist in a women’s prison. Oh for more straight talking like this!!

I came upon this excellent piece by FWS, after falling down a Twitter hole. It's their magnificently piss taking reply to Open Democracy - they demanded information about their funding, directors and associations:

https://forwomen.scot/07/08/2022/open-democracy/

Did you by any chance happen upon that via the Wings piece on that Adam Ramsay chap? If not, also worth a read. A throwing down of the gauntlet to sue for calling him a liar.

On the subject of suffrage, perhaps one of you knowledgeable peeps could help me out. I was told by a teacher many, many, many years ago that one of the leaders of the suffrage movement (probably a Pankhurst, i forget) was set on that trail because of Oxbridge degrees. She wouldn't be awarded a full degree because...something...something...vote. It was a long time ago.

The impression I was left with was for this person, at least at the start, the suffrage movement was rather self serving. I always felt this was a bit of a smear but I've never seen any other reference to it. Anyway I've just reminded myself, it's obviously been bugging me slightly, anything to it or it is nonsense?

Past Present Future review — in defence of bad ideas

The Cambridge politics professor David Runciman’s premise is to take ideas such as the anti-suffragette movement seriously, with fascinating results

NoBinturongsHereMate · 23/05/2024 21:59

Christabel Pankhurst qualified in law but as a woman was barred from the Bar. She was already heavily into the suffrage movement by then, but your teacher might have been thinking of that?
