Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Kucinghitam · 16/04/2024 12:11

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

There was a thread (I think it was titled something like International women's day) that was accumulating posts about remarkable women. I don't know if this lady already had a post but I just happened across her

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hilda_Lyon

She has a shape named after her, submarines!

Bit disappointed to read that link, I thought it would be called the Hilda shape. Grin

lcakethereforeIam · 09/07/2024 19:02

I think a Hilda shape would be a way of tying your headscarf that enhances your curlers. It should definitely be a thing.

mach2 · 09/07/2024 20:17

Hilda Lyon had a cracking career for those times. Her part in submarine design seems to be well buried.

Gonners · 09/07/2024 20:56

Sorry, @mach2, but I'm going to have to say it: not so much well-buried as sunk without trace.

lcakethereforeIam · 09/07/2024 21:02

Completely torpedoed.

mach2 · 09/07/2024 21:05

Given das boot.

Kucinghitam · 10/07/2024 10:27

Just a general observation, but there seems to be a massive surge in Righteousness in recent days. Is it related to the general election, or to the onset of school holidays, or just that the bat signal has been triggered by something elsewhere?

MouseMinge is very poorly in hospital at the moment. Let's keep her in our thoughts.

lcakethereforeIam · 11/07/2024 11:43

I saw this article and I thought I needed to put it somewhere

I didn't want to start a new thread that would just rehash old arguments. This is horrific. All the women and children caught up in this. I have no words.

I'm sorry to hear that. Sending her my best wishes

And I thought all women had to worry about was toxic shock syndrome and creepy Mulvaney types offering them stuff

Streeting likely to make the puberty blockers ban permanent. x.com/Jebadoo2/status/1811688996721865172?t=IZybYFuPSlGaM20G9rlDbw&s=19

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 12/07/2024 16:30

All those metals in tampons! JFC, I used those damned things for decades.

Good news about the puberty blockers, hope it goes through.

artant · 12/07/2024 17:08

The tampon thing is really scary. I too used them for decades before discovering the mooncup. Thankfully I am now well past the point of periods.

artant · 12/07/2024 17:09

And good news about puberty blockers. Hope it happens.

Britinme · 12/07/2024 18:40

Predictable I suppose but the Telegraph ran a poll of readers and 94% agreed with the decision to ban puberty blockers.

Helen Joyce said it was “an excellent sign that Labour intends to take an evidence-based approach to child gender medicine, and to prioritise child safeguarding”.
“As the Cass Review showed, there is no research to support using these life-altering drugs for gender confusion. Mr Streeting now needs to go further, and rein in the private sale of oestrogen and testosterone,” she said.
“Otherwise, unregulated online clinics will continue to profit from desperate teenagers and young adults, who have been misled by trans lobbyists into thinking of these powerful hormones as a panacea.”

DH and teen DDs are in the other room watching the new Quantum Leap. There seems to be an episode in which a male-of-gender is on a girls' sports team. I can hear a lot of angsty crying and tragic music in the male-of-gender scenes. Then another character says how unfair the male's presence is on the girls in the team (unfriendly music plays). There's also something about how the found family is better than the boring blood family. Anyone want to take bets on how this story is going to go?

(DDs are very BeKind and Rainbow glitter, so this episode is going to delight them).

I'm finally catching up with this series and have stalled on this episode. It is so preachy, it makes the infodumps on Law and Order SVU look like a model of subtlety. I'm beginning to wish it was on iplayer so at least I could watch it at double speed during the "leap of the week" bits, and then revert to normal for the series arc stuff.

Article in the Telegraph explicitly makes the point that gender ideology is akin to a religion. Something that isn't novel to many of the posters on these threads. Still, bears repeating for the uninitiated

Caught this in the Times about doping and the East German athletes

www.thetimes.com/sport/olympics/article/historys-most-ruthless-doping-programme-and-the-women-who-paid-the-price-06knxlf7f

https://archive.ph/RuN9N play the wall

Honestly, it's all so hauntingly familiar. The doctors moving on and setting up for themselves once the Tavistock wall came down. The few brave people speaking up. The tras captured who will not admit that they did anything wrong. The utter gutlessness of the IOC. Sharron Davies must think she can hear an echo.

I think there was a thread about this charmer, Cameron Downing the former SNP Equalities officer, but I can't find it

www.thetimes.com/uk/scotland/article/former-snp-equalities-officer-jailed-for-sex-assaults-w9pbknlqd

https://archive.ph/tPK20 strength to the people he abused, you have been amazing 👏

If I read it right 6 years custodial, 3 under supervision with a discount for being a poor, wee sprog whose brain hadn't matured.

To the SNP maturity seems to be on as much of a spectrum as gender.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 16/07/2024 21:08

What a nasty man. I wonder if he thought he was invincible, being so close to wee Nicola. He was (thankfully) wrong.

Gonners · 16/07/2024 21:14

If people under 24 don't have "fully-formed brains" (whatever that means) then why are they allowed to marry or vote, or even cross the road unsupervised, let alone become MPs or equalities officers?
