Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I didn’t know about this. Is that in their broadcasting rules?

No sure if it's rules or convention.

I've been saying it to hammer home the point that every vote does count and no vote is 'wasted' even if you are in a safe seat.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 05/07/2024 09:03

I know it’s too early to think about but I would love to see Kemi Badenoch take leadership of what’s left of the Tories.

Bearing in mind that the other leaders in the commons are gonna be:

Keir Starmer
Nigel Farage
Ed Davey
Carla Denyer

the addition of Kemi would make for some fun Prime Minister’s Question Times (and not let Lab/Lib Dem/Green shit on women’s sex based rights without a fight)

(Dunno who’s left to lead the SNP in Westminster? Or the DUP?)

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2024 09:03

It's the reason UKIP got so much broadcast time though.

It’s a fair point and I had no idea it was the case

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/07/2024 09:16

Sad that Cherry's gone.

duc748 · 05/07/2024 10:36

The SNP produce one decent MP, and....

lcakethereforeIam · 05/07/2024 10:45

Sorry for Joanna Cherry, she was too good for the SNP anyway.

Rosie keeping her seat emphatically demonstrates that 'GC' view are not a vote loser.

duc748 · 05/07/2024 10:53

Maybe that will embolden the Cowardly Lion to be less scared of GC people.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 05/07/2024 10:56

Really sad about Joanna Cherry, I hope she goes onto something good.

Good for Rosie Duffield, apparently her majority is bigger than the last one.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 05/07/2024 10:57

This is one of the most bizarre clips I've ever seen. Four adults and not one of them can answer the question 'What is a woman?'. They just stand there looking like complete idiots.

Shes a lawyer isn't she? I am fairly sure she has a whole pile of work available to her in Scotland she could work on...

Maybe she could offer to become a trustee of an Edinburgh Charity.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 05/07/2024 11:10

Yes, she could be kept busy for some time.

MouseMinge · 05/07/2024 11:42

Given that we are first past the post in this country I would have thought that the third party would be measured by parliamentary seats and not GE vote percentage in which case the Lib Dems very much remain the third party. In fact I think they're now the biggest third party in history with their 71 seats despite having over 500k fewer votes than Reform.

Gonners · 05/07/2024 11:51

More than 9,000 fewer votes, though. Fortunately the new Tory candidate lost an eye-watering 16,000+ votes. “One must have a heart of stone to read the death of little Nell without laughing.”

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 05/07/2024 12:16

Oh, I read earlier that she'd increased her majority but guess not.

Gonners · 05/07/2024 12:39

Oh, she HAS increased her majority! By a lot, too - from 1,836 to 8,653. It's just that she's done so on a reduced vote, and a reduced percentage of the vote, because the Tories have done so very much worse (thanks to Reform).

SinnerBoy · 05/07/2024 13:49

Did Farridge get elected?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/07/2024 13:55

He did. And 3 others.

SinnerBoy · 05/07/2024 14:01

Ugh. All I heard was that four of the financially illiterate nutters had got in.

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2024 15:07

Could be worse, could be the Antrim coast narco-gangsters (or their lackeys). Though come to think of it, Clacton and Great Yarmouth probably have a similar demographic, minus the religious sectarianism.

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2024 15:08

Very funny to see Paisley gone, despite Jim Alastair being - what he is - and delighted to see Robin Swann elected, well deserved.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/07/2024 15:10

Swann's good news. Less keen on our TUV- and Reform-supported former DUP independent.

DeanElderberry · 05/07/2024 15:40

Is that the one endorsed by Jamie Bryson? Not something that would fill me with good cheer.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/07/2024 15:57

Bryson (and Kate Hoey) favoured his UUP rival, I think - although not necessarily formal endorsement.

Waitwhat23 · 05/07/2024 16:45

Sniggered at this -

'Now try declaring yourself a winner, John. #GeneralElection2024'

https://x.com/jk_rowling/status/1809103493963165716

There's so many SNP names I am delighted to see go (with the obvious exception of Joanna Cherry - I wish she had stood as an Independent).
