Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

I caught the post-school/work rush. The local polling station had moved venue and it wasn’t as well organised as normal which was a surprise. There’s normally two queues depending on where your road name sits the alphabet, one set of volunteers with the papers on each side of the room, signs on the door directing you to the right queue.

However this venue is long and thin so both sets of volunteers in the same table on the same side of the room. No signage apart from the statutory “polling station” signs. So there was one massive queue to the nearest pair and one pair of volunteers sitting there twiddling their thumbs until every other disgruntled voter reached the top of the massive queue and was redirected, muttering about a waste of time standing about.

Not exactly a disaster in the big scheme of things, but given how long elections have been going on you’d have thought by now they have the hang of running it like clockwork. In my limited volunteer experience, it usually means the person Who Does and Thinks of Everything isn’t involved this year.

Sounds messy. We have numbered tables, with everyone's number printed on their polling card.

Not that long queues are likely here - I've only ever had to wait once, and that was a queue of 2 (including me).

The story of the night isn't a vote for Labour. It's a vote for Reform.

Labour needs to watch their backs over the next 5 years. It does explain a shift from pushing TWAW - those type of policy which can be seen as too politically correct are potentially risky.

Labour have a tough job on their hands economically, but their progressive agenda is something they need to be very measured about.

They HAVE to consider carefully. Pushing too hard and they risk losing ground to Reform in 5 years time.

I know it's weird to be talking about the next election tonight but it is a significant thing because the agenda for the next term has been set now.

There's no enthusiasm for Labour. That's a massive issue.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 04/07/2024 23:57

i’m actually quite heartened by this. I wouldn’t have wanted Reform to run the country but that they have (probably) taken a big share of traditional Labour votes means that Labour need to pay close attention and drop the American IDPOL stuff.

lcakethereforeIam · 05/07/2024 00:05

Does anyone know what's happened in Wales? They've essentially had a Labour Government in the Senedd. Do they have the same enthusiasm for Westminster Labour as the rest of the country?

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 05/07/2024 00:14

No idea - I think I saw a banner across the bottom of the C4 coverage saying David TC Davis thinks he’s lost his seat according to the exit polls, but he’s a rare Welsh Tory 🤷‍♀️

With that size majority is there an incentive to listen?

That's my big question.

They should, but whether they will is another matter.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 05/07/2024 00:41

Good point!

I suspect Starmer will care, especially as the Reform vote will take the shine off his landslide/be the news story of the week.

Whereas previous Labour leaders probably wouldn’t pay any attention at all (cough, Corbyn).

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 05/07/2024 00:43

The (probable) SNP trouncing should underline the lack of appetite for ‘Woke’ amongst the electorate?

Husband kept saying "Wow, what happened to the SNP?" and he genuinely is puzzled. As I said elsewhere, he works very very very hard in an Upton-Sinclair-esque way, to keep himself maximally ignorant of this issue.

Thangam Debbonaire lost her seat. One of the very few to do so from Labour. She's gender critical isn't she? Bristol. Went green.

Jess Phillips got booed. She won but got a terrible reception.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 05/07/2024 07:37

Surely he's at least heard about the SNP financial scandal, even if he's managed to la-la-la his way through Bryson?

Compared with the exit polls, Reform's a decidedly damp squib. Whereas LibDems.and Greens have done incredibly well.

Inpredict Labour will put the SNP loss down to finance rather than gender, and take the other results as a sign for full steam ahead.

RedToothBrush · 05/07/2024 07:45

NI is fascinating. The DUP got whalloped.

Lagan Valley elected Sorcha Eastwood its first woman and first non-unionist MP. The losing DUP candidate said "boundary changes" and "divided unionism" lost him the seat.

Yes, in the end he decided it was about the police investigation about the finances. He did know vaguely about the fragrant Isla when it was all kicking off, but somehow managed to memory-hole this knowledge.

DUP has indeed been walloped - Paisley out. TUV (and TUV-backed 'independents') have done depressingly well.

Not a damp squib in terms of vote share tho, currently significantly more than the Lib Dems.

BezMills · 05/07/2024 07:54

Jess got hammered, in a significantly muslim constituency, due to Gaza, I think.

I'm glad she was returned.

Thangam losing to the greens was disappointing, but I don't think FWR and Gender Ideology was much of a factor, I cite the PoW only getting 196 votes to support that.

Which means they are the third party. Which means it's them, not the LD that gets the airtime on public service broadcasters.

Yes! Well done Rosie!

Hopefully she’s getting plenty of support from the cross party sisterhood that Jess Phillips talked about.

Jess Phillips generally rubs me up the wrong way but she made me wet eyed last night. Sounds like it’s been a horrific campaign for her and her volunteers.
