Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Is this the start of The Guardian's gentle extrication?

Good question.

It shows that these issues are unlikely to just go away because woman really are bothered by this.

That ultimately makes it harder for Starmer to ignore, no matter what some of his party want.

You know when we say on FWR to pull. Keep pulling.

Its getting noticed.

BezMills · 03/07/2024 07:41

I'm looking forward to the graun gaslighting us that they always prioritised FWR blar blar blar.

Trans advocate Harriet Harman in line to run equalities watchdog

Well, that’s me decided. I might dig out my felt tip pens.

Careful now, you'll get a sneery scolding from one of the Raptured.

If I truly believed Labour were going to improve housing, welfare and the NHS, that would be one thing. But I don’t. It will be more of the same shit.

SinnerBoy · 03/07/2024 11:02

Goodness me, so Hattie is undoubtedly going to do her best to undo the good work, which Kwisher Falkner has achieved.

duc748 · 03/07/2024 11:52

Tbf, that Times piece is all ifs and maybes. There might even be an element of 'run it up the flagpole'. But if that actually happens, and HH is appointed in Baroness Falkner's job, well, that lays it all clear, doesn't it?

Yes, I appreciate it’s rather vague referring to two ‘Labour sources’. But that Starmer is ‘yet to take a view’ and Harman has ‘declined to comment’ is concerning.

duc748 · 03/07/2024 12:12

Harman pretty well has to decline to comment, what could she say that would be appropriate? "Yeah, I've been told the job's as good as mine" [taps nose] ? 😃

But of course I wouldn't trust Starmer on this any more than on anything else. ATEOTD, there are a lot of pro-gender voices in the Labour Party (and as for the unions...), and they won't be going away any time soon.

DeanElderberry · 03/07/2024 16:11

I give the 'trans people have always existed' thread about another 20 minutes.

lcakethereforeIam · 03/07/2024 16:17

I think it's gone! I didn't post on it. What happened?

No, still there.

duc748 · 03/07/2024 16:20

I didn't think it was that controversial. The usual stuff: Samoa, India, Navajo.

DeanElderberry · 03/07/2024 16:20

Nothing happened, but a lot of us are expressing gender scepticism of one sort or another and that can't be tolerated. Still, more quotes for those essays the young are writing these days.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 03/07/2024 16:30

It’s a good thread, lots of thoughtful and informed responses.

No doubt Mx Palmer of Aston would hate it.

Has anyone mentioned the Rebecca Riots 😁

No! Go and add them into the mix.

I read that years ago. One thing that struck me is once the Party had declared someone persona non grata, everyone - close family included - had to "draw a line" under them or face suspicion themselves.

Like cancelling.

In North Korea you wouldn't (didn't? I'm not sure if it still applies) even get that option. They have/had a 3-generation rule for political "crimes", such that the next 2 generations would also get incarcerated as punishment for the original crime, even if they had nothing to do with it. This could mean a lifetime of imprisonment.

mach2 · 03/07/2024 22:42

It sounds like the ancient Teutonic practice of sipenhaft, which the Nazis revived.

VictorianBigot · 03/07/2024 23:05

A women-only group I follow has just emailed to say they have been excluded from Brighton Pride:

https://brightonsisters.wordpress.com/pride-prejudice/

I also saw this lovely comment on their Instagram post about it.

Brighton Pride issued its own statement on Instagram. The comments are full of ‘why are you letting Labour march, I don’t feel safe with Labour, shame on you’.

What a world

Why spoiling your ballot is better than not voting. threadreaderapp.com/thread/1808637781138129244.html

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 04/07/2024 09:41

I hope Brighton Pride cancel every group that some rando makes a complaint about and are left with the tiniest parade ever.

Why spoiling your ballot is better than not voting.

I didn't have to, I voted for the POW candidate. I'm aware that only 16 are standing, nationally, so most won't have that option. I don't expect her to win, but I'll be pleased if she doesn't lose her deposit.

The message is clear, anyone who thinks women are entitled to single-sex spaces is not welcome.

The irony of the endless ‘I don’t feel safe’ comments. Why the fuck do they think women want to keep their spaces single-sex?

SinnerBoy · 04/07/2024 09:50

Yes, it's beyond ridiculous. Not safe? In case a woman won't kow-tow to you? Get a bloody grip, for goodness sake!

NoBinturongsHereMate · 04/07/2024 10:01

A lot of the same arguments apply to voting for a candidate you know won't win. Possibly even more strongly because it doesn't rely on someone reading the spoiled ballot to know what policies you favour.

It does shed an interesting light on the recent flood of 'Don't spoil your ballot - nobody looks, nobody counts, nobody cares' posts.
