Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Idly scrolling and came across this

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22l3n0wn0o

I don't necessarily disagree with the people thinking this is wrong but

saying "it undermines teaching about evidence-based theories such as evolution"

I don't know what the NSS have been like on genderwoo, but if they're on board with it then they're being very hypothetical.

lcakethereforeIam · 20/06/2024 22:24

Me again. Found this on change of guidance in NI on the BBC

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crggr1yyrezo

If anyone knows of a more appropriate thread, please repost it.

There's a quote from a genderwoo charity, which seemed really dated and petty. i was prepared to think 'typical BBC' and scroll on by but Sex Matters got the last word and were sensible, knowledgable and compassionate.

Female teacher watching class doing exam - stock photo

Primary school transgender guidance scrapped by CCEA

The guidance had been part of relationship and sex education resources from NI's curriculum and exams body.

I'm not posting a link or starting another new thread, but if anyone is interested there's an article by Maya Forstater in Unherd. There's a comment by Lang Cleg. I'm assuming the same one who was late of this parish?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 21/06/2024 09:46

I saw that and wondered if it was her.

punishment by process and then we have the bonus opportunity to slight/sleight (idk, gaf) her character in the meantime.

Look at her! Look at the WOMAN who has done something TERRIBLE and is in TROUBLE with the POLICE!

Our postal votes arrived yesterday. I still don't know who to vote for. I know who I won't vote for though.

probably the B storyline on this episode of UK General Election will be the low turnout. A lot of people seem to be struggling to find something to vote for

Even the tories admit that this government is a clapped-out joke with nothing to offer the country except ludicrous last-ditch policies, a PM who has given up campaigning and they are reduced to Loser Talk like 'but it wouldn't be the right thing for britain if Labour got a super duper bumper megajority' rather than trying to win.

Labour wins by default, thanks more to the ridiculous patheticness of the last 9 years of Tory governments and 5 PMs, rather than because the UK wants to vote for them.

anyolddinosaur · 21/06/2024 11:22

Hard to judge on turnout - lots of people want change and will be turning out to vote for anyone but a tory even though they dont greatly care for Labour. Expect more tactical voting.

Because I'm entirely evil, I'll post the link.

I didn't know that James May had taken up acting.

duc748 · 21/06/2024 11:48

Maya F and Helen J always come across to me as just good people. Who value honesty and decency and fair treatment for all. Plus, fortunately, they and their team are all very smart cookies. They need to be in this messed up world.

Opened up my postal ballot paper to look at the options (obviously, I already knew what the options are, but there's something about actually looking at the ballot paper).

Can't vote Greens because utterly bonkers gender bollocks. Couple of parties I was somewhat unfamiliar with - TUSC and Workers Party; a brief Google was enough for me to say FUCKING HELL NO WAY. Won't vote Tories or Reform. SDP are almost OK with most of their policies, but far far far too anti-immigration for me, they're basically like the political-left-of-centre-ish version of Reform. That leaves Labour and the LibDems, neither of which I think I can bring myself to vote for either.

I really don't want to spoil my ballot again, but I think I'm going to have to. Sorry not sorry, News Agents.

Our constituency is predicted 100% overwhelming Labour victory so whatever I do is pointless anyway.

I wish you had something or someone you felt good about voting for

Seconded! FWIW, @Kucinghitam, I feel the same. I'm angry, because we have new constituency boundaries locally and (for once) a chance of kicking out the Tory incumbent of more than 40 years (i.e. since the previous constituency was created). We also have a new female Labour candidate who in less gender-y circs I would vote for. But she is keeping her head down and her campaign leaflet can only be described as anodyne. My main problem is that I simply loathe the self-righteous tosh spewing from the son-of-a-toolmaker.

duc748 · 21/06/2024 21:03

I think even if I had a great Labour candidate (and I certainly don't), it wouldn't be enough to make me vote for them, especially in the light of Starmer's recent utterances. He's had all the opportunities in the world to speak up clearly and unambiguously, and in fact he's become more mealy-mouthed than ever.

Gonners · 21/06/2024 21:34

I really miss my card-carrying Commie (in the McCarthy era) New Yorker not-officially-ma-in-law. Not long after MrG and I got together, he was on the phone to her telling her all about this new woman in his life, and she said "Yeah, yeah, whatever, that's all fine - but what are her politics?" He thought for a moment and said "Basically, I'd say anarchist." "That's okay then", she replied.

mach2 · 21/06/2024 21:42

Not great choices in my constituency - the genderloon parties, the conservatives, Reform and the Yorkshire Party.

SqueakyDinosaur · 22/06/2024 00:37

I like my local Labour MP, Rupa Huq, but am still dithering a bit.

I thought the Lib Dem's had an awful gender policy. I could have read it wrong, but from what I read, you can basically choose what gender you want to be on that day and the law will protect you. I hope I'm wrong. Wisdom on here might know differently

I did the same, I had an independant candidate as an option and so voted for her. No gender wang anywhere near her so she was the least worst option.

Woman2023 · 22/06/2024 10:13

Same problem here. It's going to be a spoilt ballot again. Really wish I lived in Bexhill (don't even know where it is!) because it would be a total joy to vote for Julia Long.

SinnerBoy · 22/06/2024 11:55

Bexhill is just along from Hastings, on the South Coast.
