Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

@EqualityinSports

Given your name, you are probably already aware of this website, but posting just in case. Handy when people try to gaslight you about it not being inherently unfair for males to compete against women and girls.
https://boysvswomen.com/#/

If boys are faster than elite female athletes, should males compete in female athletics?

See how the best high school boys stack up against the best female Olympians and World Record holders in Track & Field and Swimming.

Yes it is the one I was referring to, thank you 🙂

You're welcome😊

:When I first discovered running, a 5K seemed strenuous. But eight months after joining SFR, I ran my first marathon! Not only did I complete the 26.2 miles without stopping, but my finishing time would later qualify me to run in the inaugural non-binary division at the Boston Marathon in April 2023."

A division that used.women's times as its benchmark. The Boston maratho is (or.was) famously tricky to enter - how many women could qualify for.it a mere 8 months after taking up running?

And if running is all about connecting with his body, he's missing something...

Just stumbled across this

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/mar/06/copa-71-review-riveting-story-of-womens-world-cup-goes-way-beyond-football

I had no idea it had been made into a film. In fact, I only learned this had happened at all relatively recently. Of course the FA is still demonstrating its misogynistic credentials as it believes 'woman' can be just a thought in a man's head.

Copa 71 review – riveting story of Women’s World Cup goes way beyond football

The shameful treatment of women’s football after an unofficial tournament in Mexico in 1971 is the subject of this absorbing documentary

It's on iPlayer right now. I recommend it.

It is probably worth reading Sharron Davies' latest book which goes into the doping scandal which affected her Olympics result.

Thank you @ThreeWordHarpy I haven't come across Jon Pike, but will search for his work, alongside Jo Phoenix.

I do of course need to pass my studies to be able to progress to ultimately help change some of the inequalities that women and girls face, but I definitely do not want to discriminate or cause harm along the way.

I run a women's only running group because a lot of women only feel safe exercising with other women. I see every week the damage that has been done by shaming women.

I know I should have questioned the wording more. It is no excuse, but I think I was so deep into wanting to pass ethics and start collecting data, I didn't stop to listen to my gut. In all honesty, I had to google what cis meant. I don't blame ethics, they are people trying to do their best too.

It has been a tough couple of days, but also a good learning experience.

Hello!
Latecomer here. This may have already been suggested, as I haven't read the full thread yet, but Cathy Devine - who is on Twitter - has done a lot of academic research into women in sports. She has written several papers and is a professional researcher. I'm sure she would be a good person to get into contact with. Best of luck.

😁 beetles are ace!

In other news, terf_rocks on twitter takes women's important words and sayings and paints them onto rocks!

I have finally made it on to a terf_rocks rock...

I've just visited terf_rock there.

"I'm OK with transwomen competing in women's sporting events....

As long as I'm allowed to bet." 😂😂

duc748 · 13/06/2024 19:13

This woman is standing as a candidate in my constituency. She appears to be (loosely) a Corbynite. I've just sent her a sprawling email 😃asking her take on various gender-related issues. I'm not holding my breath, but just hoping for someone I can vote for. There are three independent candidates, and she looks the most hopeful of the lot, but that's not saying much.

Gonners · 13/06/2024 19:43

She seems considerably better than anything on offer here. It's probably too late for me to move to Wigan and get on the electoral roll in time for the election, but I say go for it!

duc748 · 13/06/2024 19:48

She does, but I suspect, like JC himself, she will be all TWAW. But we shall see. Maybe.

Gonners · 13/06/2024 20:55

Yes, that would be a deal-breaker for me. I never understood JC's adoption of that particular lie, and would like to have quizzed him about it in private. Whatever happened to the fabulous Lily Wossname, by the way? Them seem to have rather fallen off the radar. JC was a bloody good constituency MP, though, back in the 90s. Not PM material, perhaps ... but then, Keir Starmer? Really? (His dad was a toolmaker, you know!)

His dad was a toolmaker. He's managed to keep that secret. Along with being a former DPP, his mum being a nurse and his missus working for the NHS. It's amazing how little we know about him.

Gonners · 13/06/2024 21:16

No, @JanesLittleGirl! You don't say! Who knew any of that?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 13/06/2024 21:17

Next thing you know, someone will do a deep background check and discover his mum rescues donkeys.

Gonners · 13/06/2024 21:22

So. re the utter absurdity of Starmer ... it's not just me, then?

lcakethereforeIam · 13/06/2024 22:50

His dad was a toolmaker!? No!

Although, now you mention it, looking at Starmer and hearing what he says, yeah, I do think 'tool!'.

duc748 · 14/06/2024 00:09

I think, maybe, @Gonners , you feel much like me about JC; a fundamentally decent guy, but never cut out for high office (and let's not forget, and I think this bears re-emphasising, the only reason he got elected Leader was because the other candidates looked so dismal). Mule-headed about a fair few things, and taken in by genderwoo like so much of the Left, but a more honest man than most in the HoC, and cynically thrown under the bus by Starmer. I know who I'd rather have a pint with.

BezMills · 14/06/2024 02:27

I'd rather drink alone than with either of those two! Ken Clarke, he'd be a laugh. Bet he gets his round in.

I succumbed to one of the clickbaity things on the laptop this morning

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/06/12/science/ancient-dna-maya-child-sacrifices-scn/index.html?utm_source=pocket-newtab-en-gb

Two interesting results - one that the 64 skeletons (mostly children) where they could recover DNA were all male (no mention of their having been assigned sex at birth) and in many case related to each other. The other that the myth of young females beings sacrificed was invented in the first place.

Who were the victims of Maya sacrifice? Ancient DNA reveals an unexpected finding | CNN

A new analysis of ancient DNA from the ancient Maya city of Chichén Itzá in Mexico challenges long-held misconceptions about the victims of ritual sacrifice.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/13/scores-actresses-turn-down-roles-play-critical-jk-rowling/

Oh dear, what a pity - 90 actresses have turned down roles in this incredible play, and not 1 of the female roles is cast (although they've found a couple of men who are either misogynist or dim enough to sign up for the male leads).

Scores of actresses turn down roles in play critical of JK Rowling’s gender views

Stage production set to debut at the Edinburgh Fringe has already caused outrage over its explicit working title
