Women's rights general conversations - Thread 8

Continuation of Thread 7.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions in the supermarket, grr"- that sort of thing).

Worth looking at and thinking about, especially for those of us on the left.

I'm not on twiX so I've only been able to see an apparently random assortment of her twiXs. But they say it. Awesome.

That is indeed excellent.

Thanks @AlisonDonut I'll take a look

Good morning all, The world is a scary place! Thanks for posting the video @AlisonDonut

I just wanted to let you know that my research post should be going up again in the next few days, with hopefully less word soup and offensive language. My uni understood why the language needed to change and passed it really quickly. It is not perfect, but I took on board the feedback and suggestions from some of you and girl is definitely more prominent (although child is still used). I hope some of you feel it is amended enough to share with your daughters and that they feel proud to take part in the first piece of research looking at menstruation and physical activity in adolescent girls.

I'm going to stick around, because I feel I can learn from you all.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 11/06/2024 11:08

That's great - I'm so pleased the ethics board listened.

That is great to hear! I will be very glad to share your project with my teen DDs.

Hurrah @EqualityinSports ! Let us know if and when you might find it helpful to be signposted to other threads in this area for background - there is a mass of stuff, some of which will and most of which won't be relevant to you. Welcome to the vipers' nest!

Thank you @SqueakyDinosaur that would be super helpful. There is quite a lot of information on the forum to pick through.

Hi @EqualityinSports
Not sure if you've come across this before (International Women's Sport Summit).
But there are hours of fascinating talks from speakers here that might be of interest to you?
Hopefully- this is a link to the playlist from last year's conference (talks are timestamped in the description).

I made a thread for it here last year, as I found it so riveting and informative. Particularly Coach Linda Blade's talk on the history of women and the ICO- but I can't find that, sorry:

To add- one of the talks discusses the importance of language (Ro Edge from NZ)

OMG, it is shocking! I had no idea to the extent of males competing in female sports. Why isn't it more prominent in the media? Actually, I can probably guess

The new BBC Sports Editor has blocked Sharron Davies and Martina Navratilova on Twitter. He is a journalist (ex Times) with no sporting achievements to his name and a degree in French & Spanish. He says they "aren't experts" in this lovely piece from 2019. https://archive.is/iibRt

One of the reasons it isn't more prominent. www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/5091723-ioc-portrayal-guidelines?page=1

Emma Hilton @FondofBeetles would be a good Twitter account to follow - she's a biologist. Also ScienceofSport and RunThinkWrite, both sports scientists.

Yep. It truly is shocking.

I'm guessing you found it and are responding to that, but here it is on it's own just in case (as all the long form recordings of the full days are at least 4 hours long- though so worth working through as so many areas are covered )

Thought this one might have particular relevance for you, and that the consortium Ro formed, and mentions, might be another useful link for you):
