@RethinkingLife thanks for posting that about Stockholm Syndrome, when I read about it a few years ago and how it is a totally fabricated "diagnosis" I was gobsmacked. It can basically be summed up as "there, there, silly little woman - you don't know what's good for you!"

Re the lack of "good" female Labour MPs, it's an interesting subject that has come up many times and the fact is that the Left has always had a problem with women. Look back historically and the Unions were some of the most vocal against things like equal pay for women.

LRM face when VA was calling him out on his shit. He really couldn't give a fuck could he!

Check out Kirsten Oswald who stood grinning under the decapitate terfs sign. Couldn't give a toot.

And for anyone unaware, Oswald is currently the SNP Spokesperson for Women and Equalities. Yes, really.

Look back historically and the Unions were some of the most vocal against things like equal pay for women.

Union members actively deceived women to prevent them from attaining equitable equal pay settlements. Unions were actively betraying the women and circumventing the job evaluation exercises and misadvising them (until very recently). And they carried on trying to undermine them and ensure they were paid less than the men.

Many thousands of women would plausibly have had more comfortable, healthier, and even longer lives if unions had respected the dues they paid and represented them.

Dying without ever getting their historic equal pay | Mumsnet

Offered a derisory payment, mislead (including by the Unions!), and the pay gap persisted and worsened. *In the years that followed the settlements,...

Also, regarding the GRA2004 - creating a legal fiction about material reality unmoors people from reality. The idea that a certificate enables you to become a woman or a man is mad. It's one thing to change a person's legal role or standing, because that is part of the construct of law. The legislation could have stopped short of declaring a sex change - it could have stated that a person must be treated as if they were the opposite sex in certain (specified) circumstances. That would have complied with legal obligations at the time. But to go so much further and legislate that a person has changed sex for all purposes unless that is specifically denied was way too broad in scope.

Datun · 16/04/2024 15:43

No way this issue can be 'both sided'. It's obviously nonsense.

If anyone would like to join SSA in our call for a public inquiry, here is a letter you can use in its entirety or edit as you see fit.

We were delighted to hear Nick Fletcher and Joanne Cherry call for a Public Inquiry. As we all know, this goes way beyond the NHS.

I receive daily summary emails from the WSJ, NYT, Washington Post and New Yorker.

Nothing. Weird. The NYT in particular rarely misses an opportunity to bash Britain.

There was a mention a few days ago.

This is IT!!
Thank you so much for sharing this piece.

I wrote a post on here a way back, trying to articulate this- about no-one recognising the re-traumatising effect of what was happening on women who have lived with these dynamics before.

And as other recent posters have pointed out- the pronounced mental health impacts even on those who have never been subject to them previously.

I could never articulate this as well as VS has here.
I don't know if this aspect will ever be properly acknowledged😔

You’re welcome DameMaud. This dishonest reframing of the toxicity coming from “both sides” is a face-saving tactic by the reversing ferrets who threw women under the bus. I expect they lack the depth to realise the damage they are causing to women who have experienced abuse and gaslighting.

I just watched the full length version of the video in the HOC on youtube. Victoria was magnificent. Her body language and facial expressions were priceless. The way she managed to subtly bristle with anger and withering contempt when addressing certain members on the opposition benches while remaining calm, composed, polite and professional but incisive and assertive throughout the entire thing was an absolute masterclass.

Maybe they have a clue but it’s a combination of arrogance and arse saving plus misogyny

It’s pretty ugly to see

That's because they know that TWANW and none of their arguments stand up to even the smallest scrutiny.

How can you defend a point of view you don't even really believe in?

This is the thing, the house of cards starts tumbling down with only the slightest scrutiny. People who want to be kind would rather cover their ears than engage in any conversation that brings them dangerously close to wrongthink. That’s why you were ejected from the group Miss Scarlet, they were snivelling cowards with no critical thinking skills. They could have just said Oh let’s agree to disagree on this.

I think it's probably the same video, but it's pretty easy on youtube to scroll through to see her engage with different comments/questions if you don't have time to watch the entire thing. It's an hour and a half long!

A 20 minute one of VA's opening statement not including the questions is also available.

It is - and I don’t understand how they can use this tactic when there are receipts everywhere showing exactly which side the toxicity came from.

I would like to add my thanks to everyone on this thread. Gives me hope we'll find our way out.

I had been feeling very down about the whole issue following a major bust up with my DD about it. An intelligent young woman totally captured, She and others like her (and there are many) will find it hard to come back from their position.
Off to have me dinner and watch the full debate

I'm in a similar position although I've avoided the bustup by biting my tongue. Many many times. I'm hoping now that the landscape is changing, her perspective will change too. Here's hoping.

It's just plain bad law.

It's like, imagine the words "chalk" and "cheese". And you pass a law saying that if chalk has a special piece of paper it is now legally considered cheese, and vice versa.

And because a small amount of chalk is now considered cheese, you no longer have a word which just means cheese, which makes it difficult to just talk about cheese.

So you no longer have a word meaning "just cheese", you only have a word meaning "most cheese and some chalk".

But when the fuck do you ever need a word meaning "most cheese and some chalk", unless you are one of the people who wanted some chalk to be considered cheese for reasons best known to yourself? The rest of us have no need for such a word. It is a completely nonsensical grouping. The only categories which include both chalk and cheese are words such as "things" or "solid matter".

Absolutely stupendous. Thank you!

Just because a woman values women's role as mothers does not make her a 'misogynist'. Such an over-used word - a bit like 'fascist' is these days.

Totally agree. Women have a choice, that is freedom. If a woman chooses to value being a home maker above a career that is her choice. And vice versa and anything in between. I would never judge another woman for making such choices.

I note that the Guardian today has not one article that I can see reporting on Victoria Atkins' speech, though there is a fair amount of coverage of Streeting on smoking. I wonder why.

“noones proposing repealing it”.

I am.

I think we need to focus on repealing the GRA. It’s been on the go for 20 years too long and it’s high time it was repealed. It’s a bad law made by devious activists against the wishes of the public.

Lots of people are proposing repealing it. We need some politicians on board.

Me too. It's only relatively recently that this law has been exposed as being fundamentally at odds with women's rights and freedom of speech. It is now clear to pretty much everyone how harmful it was to have written a falsehood like this into statute. There may be no political will atm to deal with this head on but the time will come when there will be. In the meantime we can limit the damage by campaigning against any move towards self ID or making it easier for men to claim to be women on their identity documents or enable children to go through the process.

Same. The harms are too great and there is a better way to deal with gender dysphoria

ArabellaScott · 16/04/2024 17:24

It would be pretty straightforward to adjust/adapt the GRA and/or the EA in light of recent developments. We don't have to repeal, at least not immediately.
