@YankSplaining thank you for this

You’re welcome. 🙂 I spent my adolescence and most of my twenties heavily involved in Harry Potter fandom online, so I had about thirteen years of following what was going on with various cast members and the fandom itself.

SOxon · 11/04/2024 19:22

@YankSplaining well you articulated your wisdoms wisely

CountFucula · 11/04/2024 19:32

Dan and Emma seem like credulous fools who did not think things through properly as they are quite thick really…
and I thought that before the trans debate 😉

lonelywater · 11/04/2024 19:56

What will never change is the fact that you cannot distinguish Watsons "acting" from throwing an IKEA chair into a room for wooden-ness.

Toseland · 12/04/2024 08:31

I wonder how much pressure was applied by their agents to get them to publicly denounce their friend JKR?
I remember thinking how odd it was at the time that they said anything at all, yet they went way overboard in being mean to her - weasels.

CorruptedCauldron · 12/04/2024 09:29

Plus they stood by while she received a torrent of awful abuse including threats of rape and murder. If they’d had a shred of decency they’d have condemned the vitriol she received. They knew she was a good person with good intentions, even if they disagreed with her on the trans issue.

Crankywiddershins · 12/04/2024 09:29

I also never understand why Rupert isn't mentioned as he made very similar comments to Dan and Emma.

Since he's become a complete non entity I'd say that the answer to that question is Rupert who?

Has she deleted the tweet? I saw it but I can’t seem to find it now. I hope she hasn’t.

This is what stands out for me. Of course they are entitled to a different opinion, it's that they let her be hung out to dry.

A few people have commented that no one owes their previous employer anything, can't not speak out against them etc but they weren't ever established actors. By giving them these roles, JKR 100% had a hand in the privileged (at least in the monetary sense) lives they now lead, and they have both proved to be not very good actors as a result.

So that's what it's quite galling for them to have behaved the way they have behaved, difference of opinion or not.

OnandOnforHoursandHours · 12/04/2024 12:53

To be fair, they were 9/10-year-olds at the time. For a child of that age, Dan had already had quite a bit of success.

But I think early fame can kind of freeze people in the childlike mentality of the age they became famous.

TheClogLady · 12/04/2024 12:56

I can’t wait for the long series version of HP - a whole new set of kids playing the roles will be just the underlining this debacle needs.

WhereYouLeftIt · 12/04/2024 13:24

"I also never understand why Rupert isn't mentioned as he made very similar comments to Dan and Emma."

IIRC Daniel and Emma jumped in pretty quickly after JKR started coming under attack. I think it was at least a year before Rupert make any comment, and it was within a long interview/article about something he was appearing in (Servant?). Reading it, I imagined the interviewer had pressed him somewhat to say anything at all. Daniel and Emma, on the other hand, made their comments spontaneously.

I would imagine their agent would tell them to shut the fuck up, if they could. Why would they encourage them to talk like that?

Another reason to like Tom Felton who played Draco Malfoy. He has continued to praise JK and although he hasn't spoken out on the trans issue, has of course been called transphobic by the activists.

Evanna Lynch is also a goodun: “I just felt that her character has always been to advocate for the most vulnerable members of society. The problem is that there’s a disagreement over who’s the most vulnerable. I do wish people would just give her more grace and listen to her."

She wrote to JKR while suffering with anorexia and the two became penpals. That’s a pretty good measure of JK’s kindness and compassion.

Robbie Coltrane also defended JK, and after his death there were some awful crowing posts on X from the BeKind posse.

I wonder if they were being a bit “do it to Julia”. If the HP brand became truly tarnished, these young actors - who were very much wedded to the brand, having starred in multiple HP films - could struggle to find new work. A rather cynical take, I know! But a possibility.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/04/2024 16:01

The HP three ... it was also the timing of their "I stand with you" bollocks , right in the middle of the furore over JKRs open letter whilst saying absolutely nothing, not a jot to condemn the horrendous abuse she was getting.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/04/2024 16:05

Sorry x post. With several of you Grin

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 12/04/2024 16:30

I think the difference is that JK is too big to be cancelled. It doesn’t matter if every single person stopped reading or watching HP tomorrow, she’s still got plenty of money. Even if she didn’t earn another penny in her life, she would be fine (well I assume anyway).
For the actors it is different. I don’t know how they were paid for the HP roles but even if they get royalties the films are going to look very old fashioned in a few years and doubtless be remade for a new generation or even as a tv series. I feel that they felt that they couldn’t burn their bridges. They saw the backlash JK was getting and knew their careers just wouldn’t take it.

So cowards who will say, do or believe whatever brings in the most money? They all earned enough from HP to never need to work again. Daniel Radcliffe earned £1million for the first movie alone.

Not for the money, but for the possibility of making more films, getting more parts. I think this is why the nasty little turncoats said what they said.

But when you've been promoting medical malpractice and the erosion of women's rights for social media likes, you should feel sorry.

As said upthread, this is the reason they should be shunned.
