I for one cannot wait for the tv series and the recasting of the characters.

Actors negotiate repeat fees as part of their contracts - even a minor Hogwarts student in all seven of the Harry Potter franchise will be getting decent annual cheques for some time.

I think people are underestimating how quickly people can be dropped by casting directors of their face doesn’t fit anymore.

Someone said they “haven’t exactly been getting plum roles,” which doesn’t square with Radcliffe being nominated for an Emmy last year. I don’t know what’s behind Watson’s current hiatus from acting, but she was doing okay for herself in terms of being able to get roles. “Little Women” was very well-reviewed and was nominated for Best Picture. I thought she was horribly miscast, but she was cast.

Did Rowling make them famous? Yes. Are they currently superstars? No. Are they washed-up has-beens working in the dregs of the acting profession? Also no. Are they smug, wrong about trans issues, and did they behave heinously towards Rowling? Definitely.

The strangest thing about this article appears to be that neither Emma or Daniel have actually offered an apology to anyone, let alone JK.

Exactly, it's all built on JK's 'not safe'. Which could actually mean a variety of things. From 'never' to 'with a heartfelt sincere apology, yes' and everything in-between.

TBH I think the pair of them would struggle to apologise anyway. Some behaviour cannot be apologised away, and some people cannot see their way back even if the Golden Bridge is right in front of them.

Irrespective of the views involved, I can't agree on principle that Radcliffe and Watson should be obliged to stand by/defend JKR on the strength of the HP films starting their acting careers.

If it were the other way round - if JKR were a TWAW advocate and Radcliffe and Watson were gender-critical - would you be on here criticising them for not standing by her?

I don't think anybody thinks they should be obliged - I certainly don't. What I DO think is that, given how long they had known her, and what they knew of her character, should have made them at least wonder - 'why does she think that?'. Maybe even have a conversation. Instead, they jumped straight to public condemnation and attack.

Particularly with Watson, there was a whiff of bandwagon-jumping - I never felt there was any sincerity in her TWAW pronouncements, it was all a bit performative in my opinion - the fawning over Paris Lees being a good example. Radcliffe was coming from the position of being entwined with, and schooled by, a trans-cheerleading charity. I felt he was more sincere in his belief, but still find the lack of any sanity-check in his thinking (is this really a good idea?) contemptible. In our society, celebs have too much influence. Children in particular are swayed by what they do/say/wear. That alone, plus the extra influence they had as 'Harry' and 'Hermione' should have nudged them into exercising their influence more cautiously. Instead they went for broke.

The Harry Potter author responded: "Not safe, I'm afraid.
"Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single sex spaces."

I read that as JKR saying that no apology should come her way but should be directed towards the minors, detransitioners, and vulnerable women who live with the consequences of celebs' luxury beliefs.
