Bumping. Will digest tomorrow.

Ingenieur · 10/04/2024 03:07

As an extra kick in the teeth, Labour support full implementation of the review, and are calling on the Tories to do the same, despite Labour being right in the middle of this desperate mess, pushing it more than any other.

CaptainWarbeck · 10/04/2024 03:08

Interesting that the terms 'birth registered females' and 'birth registered males' are used mostly throughout the report instead of assigned male/female at birth. This is much clearer language.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/04/2024 03:22

The earlier thread about the Cass report which has all the front pages in the media tomorrow and 200 posts of discussion. The launch has been tracked there for several days.

I posted this on the other thread but I’ll repeat it here. The most depressing thing about the initial reports on the Report is that they’re all things we’ve been discussing here for years:

Poor evidence
High rates of autism needing looking for
Poor mental health co-morbidities
Detransitioner regret

And so on, and so on. It’s 388 pages, but that’s a condensed version of multitudes of threads saying all this for years.

Don’t think of it as a kick in the teeth. It should be a huge relief that Labour are supporting the review whole heartedly and not undermining it, ignoring it or otherwise indicating that they will be swayed into returning to the old model of gender care. They will likely be in power soon and it would be a tragedy for children if Labour played politics with it instead of being grown ups, acknowledging the expertise and doing right by those children.

I agree. This shouldn’t be about ‘winning’ but should be about what is best for people’s mental and physical health.

crumpet · 10/04/2024 04:24

Has Kier commented yet? I want to see his take, before believing Labour, particularly as Annalise Dodds is digging in

LunaNorth · 10/04/2024 04:36

It speaks sense. As these pages have, for years.

saraclara · 10/04/2024 04:46

But she said this care was made even more difficult to provide by the polarised public debate, and the way in which opposing sides had “pointed to research to justify a position, regardless of the quality of the studies”.
“There are few other areas of healthcare where professionals are so afraid to openly discuss their views, where people are vilified on social media, and where name-calling echoes the worst bullying behaviour. This must stop.

If we're going to reflect on this report honestly and objectively, we also need to own that this branch of Mumsnet has played a part in that polarisation of public debate.

Please expand….

RayonSunrise · 10/04/2024 04:59

I think our part has been talking about this while repeatedly being told to shut up.

songaboutjam · 10/04/2024 05:48

In fairness, the fact there's even a debate at all is in part thanks to Mumsnet.

This is probably the biggest website to even allow these kinds of discussions.

Oh no. No no no. It is because MN refused to yield to activists' demands and threats that we even have this discussion. Without which, there would be no Cass Review.

No. No rewriting of history to show MNers and FWR as the bad guys. Absolutely not.

Igneococcus · 10/04/2024 06:12

The TRAs didn't want a nonpolarised debate, they wanted no debate at all. Without MN we'd be like NZ or Canada now.

CaptainWarbeck · 10/04/2024 06:18

Agree that without Mumsnet there really would have been no debate. I lurked for a while on FWR and saw reasonable questions being asked and the arguments from the trans side not standing up to them. I don't think MN has been polarising, more a space for fair discussion.

When I was briefed on the NHS’s Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service (Gids) for the first time, I knew this was not just another policy area but a child protection issue and huge medical scandal in the making.

More research from the department of the bleeding obvious. It's bizarre that it took this to make it clear, but well done to Dr Cass for doing so.

So glad it sounds like Labour are on board too and agree we here should not be accepting responsibility for the toxicity of the debate ... it's like an abusive partner saying it takes two to argue when what they mean is you won't get any abuse if you just shut up and behave exactly as I want. There's nothing toxic about pointing out a system that is causing serious harm to children and young people.

I'm sure Starmer can see the writing on the wall, and will be only too glad to have the Cass report as an excuse to resist extreme transactivism.
