Who'd have predicted this would be unworkable? Who? Who?

Apart from the women and policy groups who've been warning about this for two years and more?

Who among the Real People predicted this? etc.

I'm sure it will be of great comfort to the victims of actual crime in Scotland to know that soothing the hurty feelings of some self-obsessed woke twats is given more priority than burglary, assaults, murders, rapes etc.

But as we now know, if they are impacted by shortages of police resources, it will be protestors fault,. won't it ?

Police were already overwhelmed with actual crime here. ScotGov just love to waste time and money on anything that won't improve Scotland.

Yes, but now we know it's our fault, not the polices.

No, really?

What a legacy Nicola Sturgeon has left for her beloved country. She should be so ashamed and embarrassed but I doubt she is.

So the problem is people criticising law/government?

Or the problem is people making use of a law that has had huge publicity and encouragement to be used?

Do you want us to report hate or not, Patrick?

I think he wants you to report the Right Sort of Hate.

This far in (or up the arsehole) it's difficult to know what anyone means anymore.

The problems is extreme right wing groups are encouraging supporters to report as hate crime anti racist statements, as hate crime against white people. That is why they are deluged.

Let me guess, discerning if it's the Right Sort of Hate depends on the person reporting it?

Do you have a source for complaints disaggregated by characteristics protected under the legislation existing prior to 1st April (since race is not included in the new legislation)?

Also further disaggregated by specific race?

Do you think some people should not report hate crimes?

Are you referring to the thousands of people who raised a complaint regarding Humza Yousaf's speech? I think people who complained didn't need a far right group instructing them.

HermioneWeasley · 08/04/2024 12:33

If only someone could have foreseen this outcome!

Chersfrozenface · 08/04/2024 12:33

If it's true that Police Scotland's reason for not proceeding further than merely logging the complaint was that the complainant was not Jewish, and therefore not directly affected, then that is a nonsense under the legislation and Scottish Government's own guidance, which says "If you have been targeted because of your disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity, or you are aware of someone else being targeted, we want you to report it." (My bolding)

I'm sure there's some truth in this however it's not like this couldn't have been anticipated. Many, many people pointed out the flaws in this legislation.

If you as a government create a law entirely based on people being able to report on the basis of feelings of offence, even 2nd or 3rd hand offence then this is what you end up with.

I have zero sympathy. They created this.

ArabellaScott · 08/04/2024 12:37

'Harvie claimed opponents of the change “deliberately try to pretend every expression of prejudice or just nastiness or anything offensive or hurtful is going to be criminalised”, adding: “As soon as the Act comes into force they start performatively coming out with these prejudiced, hurtful statements and saying ‘arrest me, arrest me’ in this petulant manner.'

'Petulant'? That's quite rude, Patrick.

“Then when they don’t get arrested they try to claim some hollow victory.
“It really is performative nonsense. If it was just a game they were playing it would be shallow and silly and trivial, but it has real world consequences.”

How does he know which reports are genuine and which are performative?

Swashbuckled · 08/04/2024 12:37

This is wonderful!
Hoping the complaints continue at this pace, or increase, so I can put my feet up and watch it play out 😊.

NoisySnail · 08/04/2024 12:38

As I said this is why the police are inundated with complaints. It is a campaign by far right wing groups. Link this time as requested.

"Last week, the leader of one English far-right group is said to have urged members to 'mass report' hate crime complaints of 'anti-white' hate to police, The Observer reported.
Members were also reportedly told that a particular claim from a former local councillor that 'people of colour, disabled people, LGBT+ people' were most likely to be impacted by hate crime 'because it's probably happened to them' 'singled out white men as evil'."

Police inundated with complaints over Scotland's new hate crime law

Far-right white nationalists are said to have bombarded Police Scotland with anonymous online gripes in a coordinated attempt to make light of laws which came into force last week.

Gosh. That sounds like they've created a right mess with this new law, doesn't it?

I'm inclined to agree with Jack McConnell, it sounds unworkable. They'd best get on and repeal it.
