"I believe a woman is a human being who belongs to the sex class that produces large gametes. It’s irrelevant whether or not her gametes have ever been fertilised, whether or not she’s carried a baby to term, irrelevant if she was born with a rare difference of sexual development that makes neither of the above possible, or if she’s aged beyond being able to produce viable eggs. She is a woman and just as much a woman as the others."
Etc

Going back to the Acts of Parliament if I may:
Are the judiciary happy with this Half and Half situation where 'they' record Incidents that can be used at a future date,
Has the definition of recordable under these circumstances been made clear?
Is it the case that we might not know if we are deemed to have infringed this standard.

MishyJDI · 08/04/2024 15:36

Clearly huh? Um. No. It's a complete logic bomb! I thought she was a writer....

Katie nails her here:

This is ridiculous. The group of humans who - barring intervention to prevent it or some bodily malfunctioning - are equipped to produce large gametes is not as confusing as that disingenuous nonsense makes out.

It doesn’t matter if you actually ovulate. Or if you have some sort of disorder. Your body is either female or male.

this is like insisting that some people having coeliac disease means that the statement ‘wheat is a food humans eat’ untrue.

NitroNine · 08/04/2024 18:18

@SidewaysOtter I bring only the important contributions to the discourse 😉

Honestly, I was looking at people making a collective [un]holy show of themselves on TwiX trying to argue what JKR said didn’t make sense & I had to stop because I was at risk of cringing myself inside-out. That; & the sheer offensiveness of people trying to claim that under Rowling’s definition TWAW because their being born male constitutes a “rare difference of sexual development”. Claiming to have DSDs (or rather claiming to be “intersex”) when that is not the case is nothing new; but flat-out claiming that being trans = a DSD? Utterly grotesque appropriation. Of course, this^ is not a group of people who see an issue with appropriating the identities of others &/or colonising those spaces set aside for the groups they decide to identify into.

My intellectual functioning is massively - & distressingly, as I am aware of it -impaired by one of my epilepsy medications. I also have communication issues due to broken!brain & other malfunctions. Despite, or perhaps because, of this, I cannot fathom the scores of buckeejits who continue to insist that Rowling’s argument is incoherent/lacks clarity/fails in some other way[s]. Usually this involves “if I twist what Rowling said…” & quite frequently it demands everyone suspend their disbelief & participates in the fantasy that “sex is a construct” & it is impossible to discern whether an individual is male or female.

An astonishing number of TRAs are out there chatting up shite about how women are a distinct class due to the oppression they experience & “exclusion from the patriarchy” (🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️) but Rowling just won’t use their totally sensible definition because she’d have to admit TWAW due to all the misogyny they suffer. TW literally cannot suffer misogyny. And the denial that the oppression of women as a sex class is just that is pure MRA stuff.

None of the arguments they present stand up to scrutiny; but they persist in bellowing on & on. It’s so very very male, too: the mansplaining, the speaking over women, the presumption of the right to make decisions for & about women.

“I’m a woman because I identify as one” is clearly a nonsense but is repeatedly held out as the superior definition. One that makes perfect sense. To whom I yearn to know, because it is blindingly obvious that there are many people who are women despite lacking this magical “identity”; & many people who remain just that for all their identifying as assorted animals, supernatural beings & fictional characters.

^ TwiX TRAs, not all trans people, obviously

SmugglersHaunt · 08/04/2024 18:22

I just wish she didn’t start it with ‘I believe…’ - it’s not a question of belief, it’s a fact. Other than that, chef’s kiss

Kucinghitam · 09/04/2024 07:01

I must thank Mishy for another exquisite example of #OperationLetThemSpeak Grin

BezMills · 09/04/2024 08:59

I think you mis-spelled #OperationLetThemDerp

Lion400 · 09/04/2024 10:43

Will this make it stop? I hope so for all those poor children being abused by this ideology.

they're so childish

pickledandpuzzled · 09/04/2024 13:53

I assume Mishy doesn’t believe that- I mean, no one able to construct a sentence could actually believe it.

So we’re left with a picture of Mishy sticking fingers in ears and humming so nothing difficult gets it.

Datun · 09/04/2024 13:55

CrossPurposes · 08/04/2024 15:47

Read the original.

"a woman is a human being who belongs to the sex class that produces large gametes"

Read Katie's (who?) take.

"a woman is a human being who produces large gametes"

Not the same thing at all.

I can't believe they're still using the argument ha, ha, what about a woman who doesn't ovulate, etc.

When people first hear that, they are quite genuinely embarrassed on behalf of the person who says it.

It's the sort of thing that really brings people up short.

pickledandpuzzled · 09/04/2024 13:59

If a transwoman and a woman went to the GP because they aren’t getting periods, or pregnant, only one would be offered a series of tests to find out why.
Honestly, what bigots medics are.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 09/04/2024 14:14

Theeyeballsinthesky · 07/04/2024 09:10

as a childless woman I don’t know why TRA think weaponising my infertility and that of women like me and implying that ppl think women who haven’t had children are like men is some kind of vote winning gotcha 🤪

I have seldom been so aware of my own femaleness as when I was going through recurrent miscarriages and thought I would never be able to have children.

💐to you.

Oh Mishy. What a pity you don’t understand.
You think a bloke’s a woman when he really is a man.
Oh Mishy, it’s delicious when you show your hand.
It’s guys like you Mishy.
That shine the light on the dark Mishy.

The Telegraph, the SNP doubling down on Hate Crime Law, they want to expand it re. so-called conversion practices

Wasn't sure which was the best thread for this, if anyone wants to repost elsewhere please do.

I'm pulled in two directions over paywalls. My capitalist self says that the information business has incurred the costs of providing the information and should be able to take a payment. My democratic self screams that democracy only works with an informed electorate. If only there was a freely available, national source of reliable information.

Dear SNP:

  1. If you cared about wasting police time then why did you pass this ridiculous legislation?
  2. Our societal values do not include authoritarianism.

Rowling laying it out clearly and eloquently on the Cass Report: "Today's not a triumph, it's the laying bare of a tragedy."

Over the last four years, Hilary Cass has conducted the most robust review of the medical evidence for transitioning children that's ever been conducted. Mere hours after it was released to the press and public, committed ideologues are doubling down.

These are people who've deemed opponents 'far-right' for wanting to know there are proper checks and balances in place before autistic, gay and abused kids - groups that are all overrepresented at gender clinics - are left sterilised, inorgasmic, lifelong patients.

I understand that the review's conclusions will have come as a seismic shock to those who've hounded and demonised whistleblowers and smeared opponents as bigots and transphobes, but trying to discredit Hilary Cass's work isn't merely misguided. It's actively malign.

Even if you don't feel ashamed of cheerleading for what now looks like severe medical malpractice, even if you don't want to accept that you might have been wrong, where's your sense of self-preservation? The bandwagon you hopped on so gladly is hurtling towards a cliff.

And if I sound angry, it's because I'm bloody angry. I read Cass this morning and my anger's been mounting all day. Kids have been irreversibly harmed, and thousands are complicit, not just medics, but the celebrity mouthpieces, unquestioning media and cynical corporations.

The consequences of this scandal will play out for decades. You cheered it on. You did all you could to impede and misrepresent research. You tried to bully people out of their jobs for opposing you. Young people have been experimented on, left infertile and in pain.

I thought the last tweet was going to be my last, but I just burst into tears. The #CassReview may be a watershed moment, but it comes too late for detransitioners who've written me heartbreaking letters of regret. Today's not a triumph, it's the laying bare of a tragedy.
