Vaughan Gething: new Welsh First Minister: good news for Wales

I'm a Labour party member and met both Jeremy Miles and Vaughan Gething in the run up to the election for the new First Minister. Miles was totally TWAW, mentioned trans, gay and queer when we spoke and hammered on several times about them being the most persecuted and marginalised community. Never once mentioned women, women's rights or concerns over DV etc. I managed to speak to him privately, lesbian to gay man, and he struck me as the worst kind of gay man — completely devoid of any interest in or concern for any woman. He is the Education minister who brought in Wales' new RSE curriculum in which children as young as three are taught about gender and non-conforming kids are encouraged to identify as the opposite sex.

Vaughan Gething heard my concerns about women's rights, seemed a little confused about the gender ideology situation but willing to learn, and was aware of women's issues here in Wales. He indicated that he understood the pressures that the lesbian community is under. He referenced his wife and her thoughts and feelings several times. Talked without prompting about DV and sexual violence against women and girls, asked me questions and generally seemed to acknowledge me as an equal human being. I came away from meeting him feeling confidenct that he was less ideologically driven and less set on being oppressively progressive than Miles.

Thrilled to see Gething has won. Miles was riding on the fantasy that Mark Drakeford's TWAW stance was popular and that he'd get backing from all those who had supported Drakeford. I think the reality was that an awful lot of people nodded along to Drakeford to keep the peace while realising what a disaster he's been and saw Miles as someone who'd continue in the same Progress flag-draped vein. Fingers crossed that Welsh Labour will come back from the brink with Gething leading.

Interesting to read of your conversations, thank you for sharing them.

Thanks abeona. Good to hear

Interesting to hear - thank you for sharing. It gives me a little hope 🤞🤞🤞

Wales has had a tough time of it with that twerp in Bangor and the cross dressing drunk driver MP. Glad to hear some good news at last.

Did you get the chance to meet them, LlynTegid? I'm close to Cardiff and met them both there.

I saw on the coverage that Hannah Blythyn could barely make eye contact with VG, and while others hugged him she offered a very unenthusiastic handshake. I have had several converstions with her and the fact that we are both lesbians has counted for nothing: she is a full-on TRA. I'm hoping that this vote has signalled a change in direction, away from her and Miles.

Tentative good news, anyway. I have friends out west whose Labour Women's branches are actively terfy and have started to be noticed and listened to. My own Women's Branch is unfortunately dominated by a couple of very vocal TRAs but the number of women joining us in order to try to have a GC conversation within the party is growing. Who knows? I don't think anyone would have predicted that Mark Drakeford would turn into a TWAW crusader and bring in 20mph speed limits .

I was very pleased to hear this news. I know people that have met both candidates and I said the same. I’m also in Cardiff

Hopefully things are about to change. The Senedd is looking a bit of a shit show at the minute. Fingers crossed this is the end of the influence of some of the worst TRAs that seem to have the FMs ear

Next task Glantaff toilets!

ItsFunToBeAVampire · 16/03/2024 13:54

As someone who is also just outside Cardiff, I'm glad to have a slight glimmer of hope. Thanks Op.

ArabellaScott · 16/03/2024 14:31

That's really good to hear, OP. I think often the places where genderism has been pushed hardest are the ones to kind of snap back to sense quickest, or at least where you see the strongest resistance. For probably obviouis reasons! Onwards and upwards!

Hello, I’ve sent you a PM @Abeona regarding women in the Labour Party. I’m also a Labour Party member.

I am very happy with the news today. I’ve also met both candidates and Vaughan was the man for me, although if Eluned had been a candidate he probably wouldn’t have been.

Not so good news!

ThePoshUns · 16/03/2024 15:57

Pah I'd rather they abolish the Welsh assembly full stop.
Health and education are failing.
Ridiculous 20mph policies.
Get rid.

The first one was in 2018, which seems a very long time ago now. It was probably around that time, when I was living elsewhere in Wales, that I approached my then MS and started talking about the conflict between women's and transgender rights. I was told that my MS didn't agree and found my position difficult to sympathise with. I persisted. That MS changed their position.

The 2023 Tweet... Welsh politics, independence... transgender issue useful as a way of beating off a critic. It's complicated. I'd love to know what rip4nutmeg would have posted if Miles had got the job.

Both VG and JM are compromised in a number of ways and if someone of better standing put themselves forward I'd feel very differently. But they didn't.

Labour women's declaration Cymru seem to be hoping for the best:

Llongyfarchiadau i @vaughangething!

@LWDCymru look forward to working with you as leader of @WelshLabour who understands that sex matters and the reasons why women need to keep our single-sex spaces as set out in the Equality Act.

Congratulations @vaughangething.
Wales’ new First Minister.

Will you be a First Minister for women and girls also, stand up against the ideologues and stand for women’s sex-based rights?
We would welcome an early meeting. Your predecessor ignored our concerns - will you?

The big choice for Gething coming up whether to continue with the illegal self gender id for Welsh politicians plan when it is doomed from the outset according to the Welsh government's own experts. Why run up a bill for a law which is going to get overturned? Because Welsh women will take you to court to protect their rights. Thread here:

The unlawful Gender Quotas Bill will be a big test. It should fail at committee scrutiny stage.
If Gething really wants to move away from self ID madness, then he’ll make sure it fails. Otherwise he’s going to commit Wales to huge expense and egg on his face too at the inevitable legal action.
WRN Wales have made it clear that they’ll take Welsh Govt to court on it. A big part of me thinks this will actually be a good thing as it will give the stupidity and arrogance of the administration a damn good airing. Is Gething up for that?
I’m also intrigued to see who is in his top team. Surely he’ll make big changes.

The Gender Quotas bill is a trainwreck. It is a classic case of overeach. Given how successful the Welsh government has been in crushing expressions of dissent over gender stuff they got arrogant just like the SNP. So they opened themselves to a doomed idea. The longer it goes on for the more light it sheds.

Because there are way bigger questions:

What is going on inside the Cardiff gender service exactly? No one knows. We know that Sandyford is doing crazy stuff.

What is happening in Welsh schools.

What tack Gething will take is going to be interesting. He is closer to Starmer and Starmer doesn't want Wales undermining his government by doing crazy things too much.

WickedSerious · 17/03/2024 11:44

As long as he's less of a fuckwit than Drakeford, which shouldn't be difficult.

Abeona · 17/03/2024 13:51

I agree with WRN Wales that we probably need to take take the Welsh government to court to prove how serious we are. I look forward to it and will be ready to contribute financially.

Wales has had a tough time of it with that twerp in Bangor and the cross dressing drunk driver MP. Glad to hear some good news at last.

Said twerp went back over the border a couple of years ago to "refurbish a boat" according to Wikipedia. The article is almost unreadable, with passages like:

During this time, Hurcum was the target of abuse from the Twitter account of a primary school in Cardiff after they stated that "You are Welsh if you feel Welsh..."
Which rather implies that the statement was said by the primary school, not by an individual.

I had lunch outside a cafe on Bangor High Street a few years back, and happened to be in earshot. My god, what a bore! Definitely reminded me of one of those middle-class student SJWs droning on about Marx.

I think that we'll see a lot of them in the aftermath of the chaos in Holyrood. Politicians will want to save their own skins above all else, they can see what happened to St Nicola.
