Liz Truss crosses the golden bridge

Hoardasurass · 10/03/2024 10:12

It would seem that Liz Truss has joined us on the dark side with her private members bill, which will be introduced on Friday.😱
The bill would see sex defined as biological sex only, ban cross sex hormones for minors and potentially ban all males from female single sex spaces and sports.
Quite some turn around for someone who wanted to bring in legal self-id

Liz Truss - my trans Bill will protect children

Liz Truss is preparing to present a draft law that will challenge Rishi Sunak to ban the prescription of "body-altering hormones" to children "questioning their sex".

It does put Rishi on the spot a bit though. Is he going to put his money where his mouth is on "a man is a man and a woman is a woman"? Or is he going to bottle it?

Surely “I stand with Liz Truss” is enough to make you have a rethink?

Some people know how to think well enough to separate issues.

What do you think he'll do, Adam?

AdamRyan · 10/03/2024 22:48

Goodness only knows. I thought he'd pull the Rwanda shit show when Braverman went, but instead he doubled down on it. I have no idea but it seems a bit embarrassing for him. I wonder what Badenoch makes of it too?

It's all leadership posturing, I think (and always have thought) that of the Government actually wanted to strengthen the law they could. So in some ways I hope he goes for it to force the issue, but I doubt he will because he will lose all credibility.

They are like rats in a sack at the moment, every day some new scheme, plan or plot 😂

duc748 · 10/03/2024 22:51

Agree pretty much. I think it's clear that Sunak has shown that he's not a smart politician. Mind you, could say exactly the same about Starmer.

AdamRyan · 10/03/2024 22:58

Well, as much as I don't like the government, I don't think we can really get a measure of Sunak given the absolute state of his party. I don't think anyone would do a good job of managing them, they are far too fractured and out for their own self interests now. I think that started under May, was made worse when Johnson expelled people/remain MPs like Heidi Allen left and then has got much worse since Johnson resigned.

They need to just go now rather than continue with this total shambles. I don't know how Sunak does it.

Runningwildish · 10/03/2024 23:04

I hope truss gets support from the rest of the party and doubly hope that labour MPs start to support women's rights and vote for this bill, I'm very keen to see how the shadow cabinet vote.

duc748 · 10/03/2024 23:19

Will it even get as far as a vote, though?

EasternStandard · 10/03/2024 21:19

If people are waiting for someone else to come along and do what Truss has they might be waiting for a while

In the meantime I’ll take those willing to push things forward rather than criticise from sidelines

We need it all, unless posters here are getting somewhere in another way. It all helps

Plus it’s obviously not a fad since Truss turned back on Self ID in 2020 before other parties have bothered

Edited

No, it doesnt all help.
We need intelligent, credible, capable voices putting forward a reasonable, smart and sincere argument, no matter what side they're on.
Not people who can easily be accused of taking a stance on a controversial subject in order to flame identity politics to save the her career from the ashes, mockery and embarrassment.
This is an issue that will have to be battled under a labour government who is not prepared to "be unkind". Making it a Truss initiative is the surest way to not even be taken seriously
It needs to be taken seriously

therealcookiemonster · 10/03/2024 23:40

let's not get too carried away. being gc doesn't undo the damage she did to the UK.

Runningwildish · 10/03/2024 23:59

Maybe Keir will start to champion it then

That’ll be the day

Pp are so busy running down anyone speaking up he doesn’t have to do anything

The same stuff on these threads, the wrong person, not the correct way, wrong media

Endless. It won’t change whilst people focus on those doing actually something rather than those who do nothing or worse - try to slow down progress.

Floisme · 11/03/2024 09:21

I definitely want to read the bill and hear the viewpoints of some lawyers first. The last thing we need is another badly written law. I'm guessing it won't be made public until it's been presented to parliament?

If it's soundly written then I guess we will find out who really supports women and who priorities party loyalty and / or political expediency over our interests. So whatever happens could be illuminating.

bombastix · 11/03/2024 09:23

duc748 · 10/03/2024 23:19

You are perceptive. My guess is no.

EasternStandard · 11/03/2024 09:28

Pp underestimate the anger and motivation from the other side and how much lobbying Labour will face

People may criticise (and in fact do every time someone speaks up) but the alternative, another lobby group winning isn’t going to be all that.

theremustbecake · 11/03/2024 09:35

Agh why does she have to be sane on this issue, and completely nuts on others?

It won't put Rishi on the spot at all. He won't even be in the chamber. It's a private member's bill being given its second reading on a Friday lunchtime - if it even gets a reading at all, as there are two other bills before it. She'll be speaking to an almost completely empty chamber.

coureur · 11/03/2024 09:49

@Floisme My guess is the bill doesn't exist. It hasn't been posted on bills.parliament.uk which it should have been after first reading in December. It also hasn't been posted on Truss's personal website. You could try emailing her and asking for a copy but I suspect you won't get an answer.

This is actually very common - private members' bills aren't really about proposing new legislation (as they have virtually no hope of progressing). They are about promoting the MP proposing them. Therefore many MPs dispense with the tedious work of actually drafting a bill and just use the title and precis and a few talking points for the 'debate'.

BezMills · 11/03/2024 09:53

that's super interesting @coureur

I've never been a fan of Truss but even if she didn't make a bill at all, it's interesting (to me) that she's chosen this topic for her (existing or non-existing) bill.

Floisme · 11/03/2024 09:58

I'm happy to wait till Friday to find out,

bombastix · 11/03/2024 10:00

The interesting thing about a private members bill is that it does not need to meet section 19 of the HRA, is it human rights compatible.

This is in contrast to government legislation which have a section 19 declaration by the support minister.

Regular posters will draw their own conclusions on this "bill" and whether it truly exists. But there is unlikely to be any legal analysis to support it for the above reason

EasternStandard · 11/03/2024 10:11

It’s interesting on another thread some posters were claiming they could just change the law ‘easily’, overnight etc

I found that possibly dishonest or uniformed

This topic is woven heavily in ECHR and other, there’s no way it won’t take time

What pp will probably find that Labour’s motivation and direction of travel won’t be for women. So all these critical posts won’t be aimed at women speaking up, in gov anyway, as it won’t happen.

coureur · 11/03/2024 11:21

@BezMills I’m pretty sure that Truss will hold any position that plays well to her audience - the NatCon faction of the party. She’s looking at the post-election rump Tory party and what her status in it will be.

What is needed is reform of the GRA and an amendment to the EA to clarify the meaning of ‘sex’. We could also do with imposing a duty on public bodies to actually make use of SSEs where it makes sense to do so. I’m strongly opposed to legislation around sport (as I’ve posted before on here) - I think this is a decision for governing bodies not governments. Of course government could make receiving lottery funding contingent on enforcing SSEs in sports if they so wished.

That’s as ridiculous as saying that cisgender people stand with Lucy Letby.

What's 'cisgender'?
