IWD: almost BBC, almost…

Prepare yourselves for a shock mes amies: the BBC article about IWD actually manages to be all about women. Genuinely a lovely surprise. I mean, the horrors women worldwide are experiencing are clearly not lovely; but the idea the BBC could manage to make IWD about women gives me a wee fuzzy glow.

So why the thread title? Because at the end is a link to the BBC’s list of 100 [people who identify as] “women” 🙄 They were so very close, then there’s that link tacked on at the end, which could read either as a rude gesture to women, or a gesture of supplication (specifically, seeking forgiveness) to TRAs…

International Women's Day: When is it and why is it important?

@NitroNine That link doesn't work for me. Are you saying you ran your eye over it, and spotted names of 'women' who have opted into womanhood rather than reaching it via puberty?

NotTerfNorCis · 08/03/2024 18:09

You mean the jokey link about International Men's Day? That wouldn't bother me. Males being presented as women though... that would.

NitroNine · 08/03/2024 18:31

@Gagagardener the article itself or the list (direct link below)?

@NotTerfNorCis no, I mean Because at the end is a link to the BBC’s list of 100 [people who identify as] “women” - this list as discussed on FWR when published last November. Think this year’s only had one TW, which is an improvement; but obviously one too many in a list of women. I think the IMD info is good to include 🙂

Yes, it’s the link at the end of the article to the BBC 100 Women list, which includes a transwoman (there’s usually one or two every year on this list that was set up to champion the achievements of women).

Including TW on a list of inspirational women is effectively the BBC saying TWAW, which isn’t very impartial now, is it? So we can only guess that the BBC views IWD as being not just for women, but also for those who identify as women. International Mixed Sex Day.

DuesToTheDirt · 08/03/2024 20:55

It was nice, though, to see a BBC article about women which is all about women (except for that pesky link at the end - yes, I thought exactly the same as you there OP).

Gagagardener · 08/03/2024 21:05

Thank you. I couldn't open the list of inspirational women. I suspected it would include a lad in lippy.

agent765 · 08/03/2024 21:31

If it's the same list I saw earlier it does include a lad in lippy.

I see the very loong thread on Chat about why so many men are being celebrated on IWD has been hidden by mumsnet. So many angry posts from so many women. They can hide the thread but the resentment won't go away.

OnlyLoveCanBreakYourHeart · 09/03/2024 00:06

There was a local group to me celebrating their women and non-binary followers accompanied by photos. The non-binary person was clearly AFAB. Interesting that they were included in an IWD post!

HeartofSaturdayNight · 09/03/2024 00:13

Well at least factually correct @OnlyLoveCanBreakYourHeart whilst giving a nod to the youth sub culture. 🙄

Redpencil99 · 09/03/2024 15:48

There is one...it's in November
