Goo Wan - Stonewall

Just seen Wheel of Fortune on ITV with Gok Wan as a contestant. He won about £10k for Stonewall his favoured charity.

He was saying that he was happy it would go towards their schools programme. Envy

He's gone out of favour with me, that's for sure.

Goo wan is funny though - touch of Father Ted

SirChenjins · 24/02/2024 19:10

What a shame - he seemed like a decent bloke who had his screwed on correctly. Obviously not.

LizzieSiddal · 24/02/2024 19:11

Oh god what a tit. He either doesn't know or care does he.

ApocalipstickNow · 24/02/2024 19:11

You think a man who used to refer to women’s breasts as “bangers” on tv might be a tad sexist?🤔

Villagetoraiseachild · 24/02/2024 19:13

Gone Off Wan.

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 24/02/2024 19:35

Didn’t he do a tv series focused on “empowering” women by getting them to walk up and down in their underwear?

I’ve avoided programmes with him in ever since.

'How To Look Good Naked'?

Something like that.

That was it!

It culminated in a naked photo shoot and one of the photos would be blown up and displayed on the side of a building.

I first came across him when he started his TV career and his amused contempt for women was crystal clear then.

It empowered his bank account!

Lion400 · 25/02/2024 10:50

Oh dear. Why is it ok to support a blatantly misogynist organisation?
Such hypocrisy everywhere.

Even Stonewall’s original founder left, after being hounded out by a certain faction.

This. He is bloody vile and always has been.

FrancescaContini · 25/02/2024 12:08

Nasty little man who made a career out of telling women they’re not good enough. No surprise he’s donated the money to a nasty organisation.

Yes! in a fucking shit shopping centre, no less. A smug but clueless virtue signalling MRA.

I mean, tbh I haven’t thought of him since the HYLGN years, he’s not on my radar at all.

But this thread has got me thinking. I remember the show and obviously it’s not all down to GW, there were a number of this type of shows, that told women they looked old or fat or tired (there was one that gave them surgical procedures but I forget what that was called) and TV could make them better. And while I can see a place for giving advice for women who want to change how they appear and may feel they’ve lost touch with themselves of how to feel good about themselves, these show were terrible for women’s self esteem or empowerment.

GW would always grab women’s breasts and say comment on them, I suppose the idea was as a gay man it was ok as he wasn’t getting a sexual thrill
from it, but it’s still women being groped and mauled whether the man is enjoying it or not. And while I’m sure women were ok with it, there’s tv cameras in your face and pressure to go along with the production, it’s all quite uncomfortable in hindsight.

Sorry to derail.

Hes reinvented himself in the last few years as a house music dj. Been to a few festivals and he’s played a set.

Yes! Thank goodness things have changed since then. The stuff we had to put up with without realising his bad it was! Like the ‘lads mags’. I’m glad it’s not like that today.

Just as things were looking up for us, we have this men must be allowed in all women’s spaces / biology means nothing business. No thank you.

Yes, his behaviour towards those women was always uncomfortable watching. I'm sure in his head he was being lovely to them.

But your thread title is a ray of sunshine on a board full of having to deal with grotty men being grotty.

Not a derail at all.

You’re right, there were several.

There was a programme called How To Look Ten Years Younger. (Having watched every episode, I concluded that the answer was: get a decent haircut, and don’t let your teeth fall out.)

There was that Trinny and Susanna programme. (Conclusion: don’t let that pair of posh weirdos choose your clothes.)

But it was also the era when Bullying And Demeaning As So-Called Entertainment was all the rage in the media. Gordon Potty Mouth Ramsay. The weakest link. Big Brother.

Now the media zeitgeist seems to be: Botox, bikinis, and being paired off.
