Congratulations to the UK's first trans and non binary domestic violence refuge. I hope you get all the support both political and financial possible. This TERF is incredibly supportive that the trans and non binary community has built a space of their own to support their own community. If it has a fundraiser I hope JKR donates with her usual generosity. I welcome this development and give my best wishes for long term success and hope you serve your community with pride and unanimous appreciation for all the hard work. This is important work and everyone contributing deserves praise and recognition.

Given refusing to "affirm your partners gender identity" is supposedly domestic abuse, one wonders what the criteria for admission will be.

I wish them every success, and all of their clients healing.

Though I don't understand why you'd donate double to this cause than to GC crowdfunds, or why you'd think JKR should put her hand in her pocket? There are some very wealthy TQ+ focussed charities who could financially support this cause, while GC women have to scrape up every £5 when our legal rights are taken away. And JKR isn't everyone's rich aunty. Obviously give whatever support you choose to whatever cause you choose.

Because I see this as a win win. Funding a refuge for trans and non binary is good for a number of reasons.
1 It helps trans and non binary victims of domestic violence.
2 It overall provides more capacity for everyone who is a victim of domestic violence.
3 If it's OK to make a refuge for only trans and non binary people then it's also OK to make a refuge that only caters to females.

All three together make this a win win for everyone. I would love to support this because it supports all three reasons above.

A report from the Domestic Abuse Commissioner found that 68 per cent of LGBT+ survivors prefer a by-and-for specialist service, while 91 per cent of trans people agreed

Yes. Great.

And when women say that? That they prefer a by and for specialist service?

Well if it's OK for trans and non binary to have a service that caters to them, then it must be OK for females to have a service that caters to them right?

Ah if only TRAs prescribed to the logic of your number 3.
Sadly this isn't the case and all the trans only shelters in the world won't change that.

HagoftheNorth · 23/02/2024 21:43

This is fantastic news - as pp said, sad it’s needed, but great that their clients will find a safe space with the help focussed specifically on their needs

Motorina · 23/02/2024 21:53

Anything that increases aware of and support for victims of domestic violence can only be a good thing. I'm sorry it's needed, but I'm glad it's there. Congratulations to everyone who helped get it off the ground.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 23/02/2024 22:16

Given that non binary isn't a real thing and I imagine that a woman who has been victimised by a man - however she identified, be it trans or non binary - would probably in actuality prefer to use a woman's shelter rather than risk a shelter that potentially contains men. (This being a situation that will bring reality home quite sharply I should think).

And given that transwomen will certainly continue to insist on being admitted to women's shelters, I wonder who will actually use this facility.

It will be very telling won't it?

PurpleSparkledPixie · 23/02/2024 22:22

That's great there is now a dedicated space for trans people. Are they going to segregate the transwomen from the transmen though, as surely they have different needs to each other ?

You wanted this. It's all FWR go on about and it's still wrong?

Indeed

It's exactly what we want. It's the perfect solution. But it isn't want TRAs want so will sadly be under-utilised. Its a real shame.

I'm not suggesting transwomen SHOULDN'T use refuges built and funded just for them. I'm suggesting they WON'T. But we shall see.

Helleofabore · 23/02/2024 22:29

This is good to hear. I hope that there will be more as it is very necessary.

Tiddlywinkly · 23/02/2024 22:35

I fully support this and would donate if there was an option.

As people have said, I wonder if it will be used.

MissingLesbianSpaces · 23/02/2024 22:56

I hope lots of straight cis men use this resource.

SirChenjins · 23/02/2024 23:11

Great news - I imagine the TRAs will want to dig to fund this centre and others that I’m sure will open due to demand. Hopefully the male transitioners who currently seek to use female only spaces now feel they have a more specialist service that serves their particular needs.

HeartofSaturdayNight · 23/02/2024 23:14

Good. I wish them well with it and hope this is the way forward.

Now, how about keeping single sex services single sex?

Runningwildish · 23/02/2024 23:16

Brilliant news

roarrfeckingroar · 23/02/2024 23:19

This TERF is very happy to see this set up for trans and non binary people.

I also support spaces just for women

Runningwildish · 23/02/2024 23:46

There will be no reason now why a trans person need to go to a women's refuge.

FrippEnos · 23/02/2024 23:49

MissingLesbianSpaces · 23/02/2024 22:56

I hope lots of straight cis men use this resource.

Surely straight men (there is no cis) should also get and be using there own bespoke DA/DV services?

lanadelgrey · 24/02/2024 00:11

The demand for refuge places always exceeds supply so every extra bed is a blessing. A dedicated refuge as opposed to dispersed places ie single units dotted around, which is often the easiest way of meeting need for lgbtq clients, is very welcome as things such as providing therapy, mutual support and security for clients is fantastic. And one that can take clients from across the country is even more good news as moving away from an abuser and former networks is often necessary. It is England only as Wales and Scotland have their own jurisdiction over DV services. As a network and expertise increases, this may be a huge benefit to the whole sector

WallaceinAnderland · 24/02/2024 00:24

Finally, great to see someone put together a support service which is, we are told, desperately needed. One only wonders why it took them so long. I hope this is the first of many introduced across the UK.
