Or he could just do the right thing and define his terms and set out his plans to protect women, saying that current laws do that is plain rubbish.

And obviously this applies equally to Sunak and the current Tory government.

This thread is about a new political party, and I think it unwise to forget that there will likely be candidates – of this party or independents – standing on women's rights in Tory seats too.

This persistent concentration solely on opposition parties, while giving the government of the day a free pass, is what has enabled this shit show to develop in the first place.

I get that people have party preferences, and that if yours is Tory or further right then it can be difficult to talk about the negatives of your party's behaviour. I've noticed a lot of women on FWR declare themselves Labour and feel free to criticise their party and try to hold it to the standard they would like to see; while many fewer of the Tory posters do the same.* I've often wished more of the Tories would try to hold their own party to account – not least because, being in government, their party has more power.

(*I think there are a couple of honourable exceptions – declared Tories who do put women before party.)

It would have made things better for all of us.

So I welcome the new political party, and look forward to it contesting as many seats as possible, in many different parts of the country, against different political opponents. As has so often been said, sunlight is the best disinfectant.

(Edited to move asterisk note.)

I don't think there are many declared Tories around that I've seen. There was one woman who I think was standing for her local council last year, but I don't recall her name. I certainly don't recall seeing many people declaring that they're an historical Tory voter and will continue to do so.

I think many people are despairing of all the main parties. It's a political shit show.

I'm not a Tory voter.

Both parties should be put to task on this.

But Posie is standing in Starmer's constituency and it is Labour's position that is the most unclear. The Tories are not refusing to define woman by persisting in saying that some women have penises nor saying that there are no amendments required to the Equality Act.

PerkingFaintly · 12/02/2024 15:06

I'm not a Tory voter.

No one has said you are, @lifeturnsonadime .Confused Or even that you can vote in the UK at all! MN's an international site, after all.

Of course it's always an interesting contribution, on threads where we're discussing who to vote for, if people choose to say what parties they do plan to vote for, or indeed have historically voted for. Or, given you've leapt in to say you're not a Tory voter, why you don't feel you can vote Tory (if you have a UK vote).

But that's by the by. It's a secret ballot, and we're all of us entitled to keep it private if we wish.Smile

lifeturnsonadime · 12/02/2024 15:19

@PerkingFaintly

Of course.

This is not a thread about voting intentions it is a thread about Posie Parker deciding to launch a political party so that she can personally stand to ask questions of Starmer as she will be standing in his constituency.

As you quoted part of my post about asking him (Starmer) questions with, what appeared to be, a jibe about concentration on 'opposition parties' by posters that you assume must be tory, why else would you have written this

If that didn't mean you assumed I was Tory then I have misunderstood your post.

The biggest critics of Posie Parker are Labour voters who don't want Labour to answer questions, because if questions are answered it will be clear that the Labour stance on this is anything but pro-women.

In other news, KJK has issued defamation concerns notices against both the ABC ( Australian equivalent of BBC) and Victorian opposition leader John Pesutto, as she prepares to lodge a case in the Federal Court

PerkingFaintly · 12/02/2024 15:33

Yes, you have misunderstood.

My first post wasn't at you, it was general - picking up a point in the discussion, sure, but also based more largely on my many years of experience on these boards.

It also wasn't a jibe (and I'm not sure why you experienced it as such) to say that I've seen a lot fewer Tories criticise the Tory party's abysmal behaviour on this issue. It would be much better for us as women, if more had felt able to do this over the years, and I hope more will, and will give fewer free passes.

My second post was at you, @lifeturnsonadime , and I @'d you on it. I notice you haven't addressed the points in that post – but that's fine, your choice.

Notaflippinclue · 12/02/2024 15:36

Voted Tory all my life but will vote for a POW candidate if there is one.

PerkingFaintly · 12/02/2024 15:37

What's less fine, @lifeturnsonadime , is this: "Posie Parker deciding to launch a political party so that she can personally stand to ask questions of Starmer "

Do you know that to be true? That Posie has started a party only to get at Starmer? Rather than to raise the issue of women's rights on a broader scale, potentially with other candidates if others are willing to stand?

I think you may be misrepresenting her. Though of course I'll stand corrected if it proves to be true.

This probably answers your question. I think Posie Parker is standing to ask questions of Keir Starmer and of Labour because that is what she actually said.

Sure, there is a broader point that questions should be asked of other political parties.

'I will run against Keir Starmer and force him to answer questions' | Kellie-Jay Keen - Posie Parker

'I will run against him and force him to answer questions.'Kellie-Jay Keen tells Dan Wootton she's launching a new political party named the "Party of Women"...

@lifeturnsonadime she said she's standing AND she'll be asking him questions. Not that that's WHY she's standing.
I'll be watching this space anyway- think there's a huge potential gap that this party could exploit

Would she be standing against HIM if he was clear that women do not have penises?

lifeturnsonadime · 12/02/2024 20:24

@Userxyd

Did you watch that interview?

Transcript:

PP - 'Well, just after the coronation I'll be launching my political party where I'll go and run against Keir Starmer and well we've got some big plans and obviously theres loads of legal stuff to get through'

interviewer - So you will run in his electorate (electorate is a bit muffled I think that's what he said)

PP - Yeah I'll run against him and I'll force him to answer questions because I used to be a leftie so I felt really betrayed by labour I would never go back. I think women I think everybody needs a voice in an election when you can vote for someone with conviction, who tells the truth, who is not afraid to say something that may offend some people, because I think we need to get back to that. I think being offended is a natural part of life, um I think we should all do it a little bit more.

Interviewer - and is your political party called Standing for women

PP - (breathes in) err no It's going to be called the Party of Women.

Seems pretty clear a primary objective IS to put Labour to task.

Userxyd · 12/02/2024 20:54

@lifeturnsonadime why are you so bothered?!
She's clearly become disillusioned with Labour, yes, and therefore is standing so that she can create as she said later in that interview, a party that women can believe in.
That sounds like genuine motivation to set up a bonafide party.
You saying she's standing "to ask KS questions" sounds like you're trivialising it when she clearly has genuine reasons which lots of people will agree with.
Why are you trying to undermine what she's saying?

I don’t think @lifeturnsonadime is doing that

I hadn’t seen that transcription before, interesting

Eh? I'm not, I'm simply stating facts as I see them in response to questions asked of me.

I share KJK's disillusionment with the Labour Party on this.

If the Labour Party weren't fudging the issue there would be no need for such a party to exist because the opposition would be opposing the current government's position and giving clarity on women's rights.

I'm not trivialising anything at all. Or undermining what she is saying.

I think before you judge me you should perhaps read all of my posts on this issue.

He’ll be debating with the other leaders on national TV so that’s not going to fly.

If he skives off the hustings, questions will certainly be asked and his opponents will provide their opinions, none of them favourable.

You mean like Boris Johnson refusing a leaders' debate in 2019? Or David Cameron doing the same in 2015?

Yeah, just look how it destroyed them . . .

lifeturnsonadime · 12/02/2024 21:09

And if you want to know why I am so bothered, again you should read some of my previous posts rather than jumping in with unfounded assumptions about me.

I have both personal and political reasons. I share Posie Parker's feelings that I have been abandoned by the left.

I have a fairly good understanding of why Labour's current position isn't adequate to protect women. I have to concede that at the moment the Conservatives, despite having been in government for the past 14 years, have a better handle of the fact that the Equality Act needs amendments to protect women's single sex spaces.

PP knows that she won't win a seat in the election standing against Starmer. That's not the primary purpose for her standing against him and setting up a party to do so. It is to highlight inconsistencies and to speak up for women.

windowframer · 12/02/2024 21:10

Women's rights are not a niche issue.

Even if the leader of the opposition don't think they (women's rights) are worthy of his time, it's unlikely the papers (in the current climate of this debate) will agree with him.

It's not a question of "women's rights". The problem is that even most of the people who believe in the importance of that issue haven't signed up to Posie's kind of uncompromising and polarised position on the trans aspect. Some believe TWAW. Most probably haven't really thought it through yet and just want everybody to be kind and find some sort of compromise.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/02/2024 21:10

@windowframer

It is 100% about women's rights.

lifeturnsonadime · 12/02/2024 21:13

Oh sorry it is also the rights of children, especially vulnerable children to grow up knowing that being who they are and wearing what they want and loving who they want absolutely fine.

There is no need for any social transition that might lead on to harmful medical transitions in early adulthood.

This impacts a disproportionate number of autistic, vulnerable and gay children.

windowframer · 12/02/2024 21:37

Of course it's about those things. What I meant was that simply saying "Posie has started a party to stand up for women's rights" is not going to be enough to make people (public or media) take a lot of notice, agree with her, vote for her or care about Starmer refusing to debate her. Plenty of people care about womens' rights but don't relate to GC feminists or think about women's rights within a GC framework.

RebekBern · 13/02/2024 04:14

I believe that the January 5th application was rejected. On the electoral commission site it says Feb 7th was the registration date. This was her 3rd application.
I believe the party is standing in every council in May and in over 500 constituencies for the GE. This is in order to secure a party political broadcast.

I'll be donating as well as joining the party when it's launched.
