Or he could just do the right thing and define his terms and set out his plans to protect women, saying that current laws do that is plain rubbish.
And obviously this applies equally to Sunak and the current Tory government.
This thread is about a new political party, and I think it unwise to forget that there will likely be candidates – of this party or independents – standing on women's rights in Tory seats too.
This persistent concentration solely on opposition parties, while giving the government of the day a free pass, is what has enabled this shit show to develop in the first place.
I get that people have party preferences, and that if yours is Tory or further right then it can be difficult to talk about the negatives of your party's behaviour. I've noticed a lot of women on FWR declare themselves Labour and feel free to criticise their party and try to hold it to the standard they would like to see; while many fewer of the Tory posters do the same.* I've often wished more of the Tories would try to hold their own party to account – not least because, being in government, their party has more power.
(*I think there are a couple of honourable exceptions – declared Tories who do put women before party.)
It would have made things better for all of us.
So I welcome the new political party, and look forward to it contesting as many seats as possible, in many different parts of the country, against different political opponents. As has so often been said, sunlight is the best disinfectant.
