Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Starmer furious that Sunak should mention his definition of ‘woman’

HagoftheNorth · 07/02/2024 15:11

PMQ’s today, Sunak highlighted Starmer’s famous comments that some women have a penis. Starmer was furious that Sunak should make that comment while Mrs Ghey was in the chamber. Surely Starmer should realise that it is possible to be respectful and compassionate about trans people without parroting the insane lie that transwomen are women (because ‘woman’ is sex not gender)

Rishi Sunak faces calls to apologise over trans jibe to Starmer at PMQs

The PM ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer's "definition of a woman" as Brianna Ghey's mother was visiting Parliament.

I can't stand Sunak and have never voted conservative, nor will I be likely to. But fuck me, Starmer is absolutely spineless. That ridiculous OTT gurning in faux-shock at Sunak's comment. When has Keir ever pretended to give even half as much of a shit about women? You know, the actual ones, who are murdered in their hundreds every year. Is this it now? If Labour win the next election, are they going to wheel Esther Ghey round with them all the time so if anyone tries to object to anything gender-related they can gasp and gurn and go 'in the presence of ESTHER GHEY?'

Starmer is lower than a snake's belly because you know there is no way on EARTH he believes TWAW. Hearing the potential future PM say that '99.9 of women don't have penises' nearly made me lose my mind. I cannot believe we are at a stage where someone saying that can run for public office rather than being laughed out of the room.

There were some TRAs who were desperate for someone trans-identified to be murdered so they'd finally be able to hold up a shred of evidence for their 'we are the most oppressed people ever' narrative, and now they've got it, they're going to exploit the case for all they can.

now they've got it, they're going to exploit the case for all they can.
Again, is today the day for this? Don't be disgusting. People who are outraged by Sunaks behaviour are not "TRAs exploiting the case".

Babla · 08/02/2024 00:08

I am politically homeless as Labour, Lib Dem, Greens have all ruled themselves idiotic by their views that everyone is a woman, no questions asked. But I cant vote Tory.

What does this rubbish even mean

So basically all Starmer has to do is invite a trans person or a relative of a trans person to Parliament every Wednesday so that he can never be tackled over his failure to state biological reality?

Flamme · 08/02/2024 00:17

Sunak was ever so pleased with how clever he thought his political point-scoring was. It was unbelievably crass with Esther Ghey sitting there listening to him effectively laughing about anyone supporting her dead child being deluded.

@Babla this might help you understand what "politically homeless" means.

https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Politically%20homeless
I can't vote for Sir Starmer as I'm a woman and I believe in sex not gender. I want to have safe spaces separated by sex; male or female. As he does not share my view, I will not vote for him.
Hopefully the links will help educate you and help you understand the idea of policital disenchantment. There are also quite a few threads here already discussing not knowing who to vote for if that helps.

Urban Dictionary: Politically homeless

An expression used to refer to an individual who don’t support a specific political party or ideology, but are active in politics

Toseland · 08/02/2024 00:22

It's so sad, lots of jeering and laughing, they all know exactly what the issues are but instead of doing anything to protect women, children and LGB people, they've left us all to fight it out alone, day-by-day for the past 8 years at least, individuals donating, fundraising and court cases. It's disgusting and now we have to listen to them taking stupid, pathetic pot shots at each other. Where are the fucking adults? Where are the leaders who will lead? Who will protect society?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/02/2024 00:22

FFS. That's not what it's about. That's your framing. The facts of biology are the facts of biology. Sex is immutable.

It's equally crass if not more so that Starmer latched onto it and made a huge fucking cynical parade out of whether she would be offended by an issue which affects half the population which is very much something that might be discussed in parliament at any time.

Flamme · 08/02/2024 00:24

bluedomino · 07/02/2024 23:51

Starmer looked like a Hollyoaks actor with his fake "shocked and stunned" face. He needed some pearls to clutch.
He saw an opportunity to avoid the question by taking full advantage of the bereaved mother, who wasn't in the viewers gallery, I bet he was gutted when he realised. He was an opportunist and he should be ashamed of trying to stop us discussing this vital issue incase someone is offended. Maybe he would be more productive being annoyed at the young person mental health services as those children obviously needed serious mental health help. Stramer never has this kind of outrage for the women killed every single fucking WEEK. This has nothing to do with what is a woman, trans issues or the incredibly rare incident of a trans identifying person from an historically very safe group of people (especially in this country) and its all distasteful point scoring by Starmer. He also needs to remember that those teens were going to murder someone that night, would he have been as outraged if it had only been a girl or woman?
And btw, I think Sunak is an out of touch fool on about every issue but at least he had the balls to say he knows what is and isn't a woman.
I am politically homeless as Labour, Lib Dem, Greens have all ruled themselves idiotic by their views that everyone is a woman, no questions asked. But I cant vote Tory.

I don't think it was in the least fake. I'm really not sure how anyone in that chamber could have failed to be cringing for Sunak and extremely sad for Esther Ghey. It's ludicrous to expect anything else.

It's not a matter of stopping discussion. He had just seen Sunak grinning all over his stupid face about his jolly "joke" with Atkins laughing sycophantically in the background. Sunak very clearly was not trying to have a serious discussion, he was doing his usual trick of jumping on any political bandwagon that he thinks might help him cling desperately to power. If he thought there were votes in the trans lobby, he would do a total U turn and lie that he had ever said anything different.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/02/2024 00:25

The definition of woman is a valid issue whether or not Esther Ghey is in parliament for the day or not. I truly sympathise with her for the loss of her child. But biological sex is a thing, and people are allowed to acknowledge it.

tachetastic · 08/02/2024 00:25

@bluedomino
I know what politically homeless means thanks so much for your patronising explanation. I have an issue with

Labour, Lib Dem, Greens have all ruled themselves idiotic by their views that everyone is a woman, no questions

Their views that everyone is a woman makes no sense

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/02/2024 00:33

Their views that everyone is a woman makes no sense

I imagine it's referring to them accepting personal self identification of gender/sex.

This is also rubbish

Alltheprettyseahorses · 08/02/2024 00:37

Reeves and Raynor were jeering and tittering away behind Starmer until they slowly realised he was hamming it up to try to deflect from Sunak's attack hitting home.

Wasn’t she late? Something Sunak didn’t know when he made his Weasley point-scoring “love me, big boys” school boy jibe.

And what was Starmer doing with his reply apart from trying to point score with the worst of the Labour Party, people responsible for the hounding of women MPs?

LadyWithLapdog · 08/02/2024 00:48

Sunak started it. The Tories don’t have a great record regarding women, MPs or not. I refer you to the last disastrous 14 years.

It was pleasing the see that even in this most Tory loving section of MN Badenoch got a good kicking in the poll the other day.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/02/2024 00:52

This isn't a Tory loving section, it's a reality-based policies section.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/02/2024 00:52

That's already been posted @LadyWithLapdog

Ereshkigalangcleg · 08/02/2024 00:57

It's odd that the definition of "woman" would be seen as a "transgender remark", unless you know there is an issue with it. I'm a woman, and half the population are. It's as much my issue as it is a "trans" one.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/02/2024 00:58

@Ereshkigalangcleg sorry, I only read a couple of pages back.

This is Tory central. There is literally no single piece of news that isn’t twisted to gush over the Tories and bash Labour. None. You may be too deep into it but for someone who only dips in and out every couple of weeks or so, it’s so blatant.
