Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

😂
This made me laugh:
"Transmaids insist we must deny basic biology or risk causing supposedly unimaginable suffering. Apparently, every time someone says they don’t believe transwomen are women, somewhere a transvestite’s tights split".

I'd put money on this being true.

Yes, very good. It was Burchill in the Guardian (!) in the 90s I first remember reading on the subject of trans. From what I recall she has been pretty consistent, especially on the point that it really isn't kind to pretend we can't see the emperor's penis.

mcduffy · 06/02/2024 20:07

Fabulous article
My jaw dropped at that last bit about withdrawing consent in person Sad

StephanieSuperpowers · 06/02/2024 20:11

Yeah, it's just horrifying. Who would have thought that was the future?

Yes, those figures on young men's attitudes to rape are absolutely terrifying. How did that happen? Well, I'm guessing porn doesn't help. What happened to consent as a cup of tea?

FrancescaContini · 06/02/2024 21:13

Thanks for the link. JB is always so spot on.

Musomama1 · 06/02/2024 21:24

I just love her. The honest, brutal truth of it all, how she cuts to the quick. I wish her writings on this were published in the mainstream.

Datun · 06/02/2024 21:36

Now comes a new survey by the Crown Prosecution Service, which appears to suggest that there has been a ‘stark regression’ of attitudes among young men regarding rape over the past decade. It reveals that more than two-thirds of 18- to 24-year-olds believe you cannot withdraw consent in-person after agreeing to have sex with someone online. Nearly half believe that it’s not rape if a victim doesn’t fight back. And more than half don’t believe rape can be committed in an existing sexual relationship.

Fucking hell!!

How's that PSHE working out?

Think of different implements to put in every office going, for school children, but neglect to tell them that rape's a crime?

More to do to tackle rape misconceptions and lack of understanding of consent, CPS survey finds | The Crown Prosecution Service

Her Guardian columns were always a highlight. No one as maverick (or funny) as Julie would be allowed to write for it now.

determinedtomakethiswork · 06/02/2024 22:17

I've loved her since the old NME days. Brilliant article.

MsGoodenough · 06/02/2024 22:46

I've always loved Julie Burchill. I used to always love her Guardian columns what must be 20 years ago now. Her writing is a tonic.

Yes but....100 genders

Signalbox · 06/02/2024 23:02

How's that PSHE working out?

It does seem to be backfiring quite badly.

PickAChew · 06/02/2024 23:13

Why have those attitudes to rape statistics not received wider fanfare? That is horrific.

Escapetosomewhere · 08/02/2024 09:14

Why is it that girls are expected to make all the effort? Surely the fact that male transvestites don’t feel comfortable using their sex-assigned toilets is a reason to teach boys to be kind – not to inflict yet more emotional housework on girls
EXACTLY.

Is it just young men? The CPS article linked to doesn't break most of the statistics down by sex. It would be good to see the breakdown by sex. They mention having focus groups for different demographics but dont go into that much detail.

StephanieSuperpowers · 08/02/2024 09:47

Well telling girls that they are no longer allowed to say who they are comfortable sharing women's spaces with does not empower them to say no in any other context and teaching young men that women don't have the absolute right to say no in the same vein can't be helping.

I was talking to my teenage DD about PHSE earlier this week - her comment was pretty much this too. They had lessons but some of the more outspoken boys would just railroad the conversation and refuse to consider other views (especially when girls were trying to speak) and the teachers couldn't control the class or the discussion. It often ended up with the boys laughing and did very little to change any already entrenched ideas.

"How's that PHSE working out?"

The perfect question!

Lottapianos · 08/02/2024 10:38

Shes brilliant, and just nails it. Spot on that it's boys and men who need the 'be kind' advice. 'Be tough' is great advice for girls - plenty of us have had to learn that the hard way

beguilingeyes · 08/02/2024 10:40

This is spot on. The rape thing doesn't surprise me at all. It's another form of control isn't it? As soon as women start to stick their heads up above the parapet we're struck back down again.
The reaction and comments whenever another footballer is accused of rape are very telling. I'm sure that porn plays a fair part but misogyny is endemic.

JulieRaven · 08/02/2024 11:32

Thrilled to see I have the approval of Mumsnet at last! We're probably NOT natural bedfellows - but in these weird times, we're all rebels. PUNK'S NOT DEAD!

Signalbox · 08/02/2024 11:50

Another said the trans-identifying child had been ‘flashing [his] willy’ at classmates in the school toilets.

I've always wondered how parents, who transition their very young children and attempt to go stealth, can rely on their child to not expose (in this case literally) themselves as not being the sex they are claiming to be. Must be virtually impossible not to give the game away at some point.
