Starmer: "trans-inclusive" conversion therapy ban, "modernise" the GRA, all hate crime to be aggravated offences as part of making every child "proud and confident"

Exclusive in Diva, following a reception at a LGBT+ Labour event in Parliament on 29 Jan:

https://diva-magazine.com/2024/01/29/exclusive-keir-starmer-lgbtqia-rights/

"“We’ll strengthen the law, so every category of hate crime is treated as an aggravated offence,” Starmer said. “We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care. We’ll modernise the Gender Recognition Act. We’ll implement a full, trans-inclusive, ban on all forms of conversion therapy. We fully support the view that conversion therapy is psychologically damaging abuse.”

“We are committed to a decade of national renewal and will work with all the organisations in this room tonight so every child can feel proud and confident in who they are, to stand up for LGBT+ rights at home and abroad and to get Britain’s future back.”

The mention of children is unclear but must have a background to the full speech? LGBT Labour hasn't tweeted about it but others have. Rayner and Dodds also in attendance.

There is only one thing that I don't believe from Labour and that is anything that they say.

Yep.

She’ll get a lot of press coverage, I should imagine.

ResisterRex · 30/01/2024 21:10

Telegraph coverage:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/30/keir-starmer-outlaw-conversion-therapy-labour-election/

"Sir Keir Starmer has vowed to outlaw all forms of conversion therapyy_ if Labour wins the election.
The Labour leader said his ban would be “trans inclusive”, meaning it would ban attempts to change someone’s gender identity as well as their sexuality through conversion therapy.
The Toriess_ have promised to ban practices that attempt to change a person’s sexuality, but have raised concerns that a ban on trying to persuade children not to change their gender identity could criminalise parents, teachers and doctors.
They warn that Sir Keir’s ban would not include protections for these groups, who could end up in court for merely questioning children.
Kemi Badenoch, the equalities minister, has also claimed that trying to persuade children to change gender in the first place was a new form of conversion therapy – a view unlikely to be supported by Labour."

It goes on (with much of what's in the Diva link) but also has a quote from Helen Joyce:

"Helen Joyce of the gender-critical group Sex Matters said: “Starmer seems more interested in virtue-signalling about identity politics than protecting children’s wellbeing.”"

A haiku for today:

Keir can’t be trusted,
We are all disappointed,
But none are surprised.

AvacadoFieldsForever · 30/01/2024 21:12

Oh Kier. We could be on the brink of WW3 and you’re still looking for deckchairs to move around.

PronounssheRa · 30/01/2024 21:12

There is a very strong correlation between depression in teenagers and struggling with sexuality, plus the link between autism and gender questioning in girls.

I might have missed it but I haven't seen starmer once raise concerns about the massive increase in girls with autism IDing as trans. So I don't think for one second his concern is around that. Though I would be thrilled to be proved wrong.

You haven't missed it. See his responses on the MN webchat at around 13mins where he says that child transitioning shouldn't happen without parental consent...apparently unaware or unfussed about GIDS whistleblowers' concerns that gay children were being transed by homophobic parents. Didn't go near the breadth of issues.

In the speech Starmer said Labour would work with all the organisations in the toom. That's his commitment.

Doesn't even speak to Rosie Duffield or the Women's Declaration, stands are not available at the party conference, never mind thrre being a commitment to work with women's rights groups.

We know which side he's picked.

pronounsbundlebundle · 30/01/2024 21:47

Starmer is a massive disappointment. I think Rosie Duffield should take the Labour party to court for creating a hostile and bullying work environment. I'd crowdfund for that.

Anothenamechange · 30/01/2024 20:47

I looked into this, this isn't really news though. Kemi Badenoch explained it quite clearly, no one wants any kind of conversion therapy, even for trans people despite what I read on here (I'd hope) But it has to be approached in a nuanced way so any therapist can help any distressed or confused person work out their true feelings without being threatened with arrest for attempted conversion therapy. Which is why it was left out of the Kings Speech.

I do feel that if Kemi is involved, she will protect the best interests of women and girls. Unlike David 'Dinosaurs' Lammy or Lisa 'TWAW' Nandy. God, they terrify me. It's just the complete obduracy-they are clearly both bright people. So how on earth can they square their public statements with what they must know in their heart of hearts to be reality? And they surely don't need to, that Labour landslide will surely happen despite their gender views which are likely to alienate far more worried mums than endear them to Gen Z? So why not grow a fucking backbone and speak what we all know to be true?

Kemi Badenoch explained it quite clearly, no one wants any kind of conversion therapy
So why is it acceptable when Kemi says it but anti-women when Starmer says it? 🤔

“We’ll cut NHS waiting lists for LGBT+ people waiting for urgent physical and mental health care.

God in heaven, how stupid can he be? He’s just handed the Tories a way to talk about the NHS to distract from their own dismal record. Now whenever Labour bring it up the Tories can go, ‘But Labour wants to push you to the back of the queue behind LGBTQ people and spend your hard earned money on sex changes!’

It’s mind boggling, almost as if he wanted the Tories to win: „It’s going too well for Labour, let’s alienate some people.“ 🤦‍♀️

If Standing for Women do manage to put Kellie-Kay Keen on the ballot papers for Holborn and St Pancras (Keir Starmer’s seat) what difference do we think it will make?

She has explained that if she is an official candidate she will have the right to be interviewed on all the main TV and radio channels. She will be able to put questions to all the other official candidates. She will be able to raise awareness and, in particular, put KS on the spot.

You need to address your pleas to Starmer.
"Please don't force women and responsible adults to vote Tory. Please speak out about Cass, child safeguarding, women's rights because at the moment women think you're a danger to women and children".

You're right. I should.

Fionaville · 31/01/2024 00:39

I couldn't hate this more. I'm in the North West, there's no way in hell I'd vote Tory. Women like me are very worried about this and cannot vote Labour anymore because of it. We're politically lost, with no party to vote for. I'll have to hope for a GC independent.

Just vote Tory. Thatcher is dead, it's not the 1980's.

In most areas voting anything other than Labour or Conservative is a wasted vote at best, and a vote for the wrong side at worst.

The Tories have made quite a lot of progress in restoring women's rights so far, all other groups have committed to destroying them.

JKRisGalileo · 31/01/2024 01:31

'Transing' a child who would otherwise grow up to be a healthy gay adult is the most homophobic conversion therapy imaginable. Tavistock staff used to joke that they were 'transing away the gay'. There is going to be a huge reckoning over this. It's a medical and legal scandal.

There is the possibility Labour don't want to win.

Lots of enormous problems with the NHS, potentially very difficult situation developing with Russia, economy still struggling.

Labour may like to promise that just ending austerity would fix all that but is it feasible? Are they going to raise taxes? How is Starmer likely to shape up dealing with Putin? For that matter, how is Sunak?

It would be interesting to see a coalition government. Most interesting would be a Labour Tory coalition tbh. 😊

EasternStandard · 31/01/2024 06:58

Honestly I think Starmer is desperate to win

And will say anything to do so

Depending on the room he inhabits at the time

It there, unequivocally and it means exactly what we understand, doesn't it? Despite some posters thinking it doesn't mean that he wants to put the TQ++++++++ agenda front and centre.

I really hope that the press get hold of this.

SinnerBoy · 31/01/2024 07:54

Emotionalsupportviper · 31/01/2024 07:57

AdamRyan · 30/01/2024 20:30

Lots of trans people think he's a transphobe, just look at the twitter comments on the links. That makes me think he's taking a good compromise line. I'd be very surprised to see him banning all therapy apart from affirmative therapy. I think he's more likely to ban non accredited charlatans of all sorts. Which is a good thing!
Anyway there is always a lot of posters with a crystal ball on here so no doubt I'll get shouted down shortly

he's taking a good compromise line.

I don't want a "good compromise line" - I want a very definite, "Tranwomen are men, and will be recorded as such officially, and treated as such by the law" and "We will not condone telling children thatchy can change sex" and "BIOLOGY IS REAL", line.

Anything else can't be trusted.
