Lots of people think that. I’m sure someone will be along soon with the relevant link, but there was a survey or something a few months back which showed that lots of people think that transwomen are women who wear men’s clothes. Which may well explain the percentage of women in surveys who think transwomen should be in women’s facilities - because they mistakenly think transwomen are female.

Even my DH, whom I have trained to be highly GC, and who takes a lot of interest in the subject, gets confused about this at times and forgets what the terms "transwoman" and "transman" are supposed to mean. I had to see a client the other day who is a "transman" and when I mentioned this, DH made a comment which made it clear that in that moment he thought I was talking about a man dressed as a woman. When I pointed it out, he said "oh yes, of course, you are talking about a woman! Sorry!". The general public are obviously going to be confused. (See also: the meaninglessness of the census question).

The (deliberate?) confusion about what is a trans man and what is a trans woman is one of several reasons why I now try to avoid using both. In real life I use ‘men who say they are women’ and even on here I try to stick to ‘men who claim to have a gender identity’ or ‘males who have medical intervention to look more like females’ (but occasionally resort to transmen/transwomen without a space if there is a report-happy male with a special gender identity posting on the thread).

I get confused sometimes. I think a transgender woman is a bloke who believes he has a lady brain. But I'm sure I've seen it used to describe the opposite because, I suspect, the people using these words aren't sure either.

I was reading an article about sex, or possibly, gender based rights in one of the South American countries in the Guardian the other day. Because of their stance on this, the liberal and random use of 'gender', 'sex' and 'LGBQT', I was completely confused as to what rights might be at risk, who was at risk of losing them and who was worried about it.

I think you'll find, @IcakethereforeIam, that "trans rights" means "I can do whatever I like and demand whatever I want and bugger everybody else, if I say I'm trans".
