Lib Dem's wondering where their members went

I just got this email from the membership officer of our local Lib Dem party.

I’ve been looking at our membership data for the last 4 year, and I’ve noticed a steady decline in our membership, and I understand that you were all once members during that time, but have since lapsed, or resigned.

You will all have different, perfectly good reasons for lapsing your memberships, but I’ve been asked by the Exec committee to understand what the main reasons are.

Hmm...what could it be causing people to leave? It's a head scratcher for sure.

Are you going to tell them? There are other parties that could stand to ask the same q!

Mumoftwo1312 · 08/01/2024 19:38

Are they giving you a survey to fill in? Or just reply by email, free form? I'm just curious

Crouton19 · 08/01/2024 19:42

I told them why I left and got some patronising response back. I also spotted early on that their definition of transphobia did not comply with the law (and said so) and that has since been confirmed by at least 2 barristers.

mumsandaunties · 08/01/2024 19:55

Freeform response.

I also told them why I'd left at the time and got a patronising email from "Daniel" telling me that "The Liberal Democrats firmly believe that trans rights are human rights; that non-binary people are non-binary; trans men are men, and trans women are women."

Well you tried. Cant make them take any notice.

SanFranBear · 08/01/2024 19:59

I also told them why I left at the time... same response as PPs. I was actually hoping for better as I was a life long Lib Dem voter, supporter and member! But they made it clear I wasn't welcome 🤷‍♀️

LadyBird1973 · 08/01/2024 20:23

Maybe when you tell them, you can preempt their snotty twaw reply and let them know that this shit is precisely why their membership is declining!

edited for typos

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/01/2024 20:38

I stopped being a LibDem voter when they formed a coalition with the Conservative Party. I was not and am still not willing to be in any way aligned to that party.

Chewbecca · 08/01/2024 20:42

I was once a big fan of the Lib Dems but would never vote for them now because of their lack of consideration and prioritisation of women’s rights.

Baldieheid · 08/01/2024 21:19

I'd send their last "twaw" reply back to them and say "this bullshit is why we've left and why we won't be back".

Consequences, innit.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 08/01/2024 21:51

I wonder who they'll send their "where did our votes go?" emails to?

So they're not interested in changing to be a palatable party? Why bother seeking feedback if they don't respect it?

AvacadoFieldsForever · 08/01/2024 21:57

I used to vote Lib Dem but they have not just allowed but encouraged this group to bully and attack and act in non democratic ways. They have not applied any scrutiny or asked for even basic data or plans of what will happen with self ID. This is a massive piece of social change however you look at it - if you want to back it fine, but at least understand what you are doing.

If this group can do it then any other group can too. Any group that shouts the
loudest and smears the most shamelessly will get their own way now.

ArabellaScott · 08/01/2024 22:14

I still wish I could vote for them. They're my party of choice, but they appear to have been taken over by silky-voiced woman-hating bots.

Saisong · 08/01/2024 22:15

If you left the party how come they are still emailing you? Isn't it a GDPR breach or something - they have no legitimate reason to keep your information?

GrimDamnFanjo · 09/01/2024 01:33

Former active member here. I'd like to think they'd listen but it's unlikely. I've been following Baroness Ludford. The abuse she gets from members is disgusting.

Yep. And it’s definitely abuse. Not disagreement. Not education. Not being a good ally. It’s abuse.

porridgecrumble · 09/01/2024 05:29

I used to vote libdem. Never again.I will not support a party that accepts lots of money from a company that makes drugs used to sterilise children.

StragglyTinsel · 09/01/2024 08:16

It’s a wonder that the libdems don’t understand their slide into total irrelevancy over the last decade. They seem to have been keen to exacerbate it at every opportunity.

They’re clinging on in some areas of local government. Where I live usually has Lib Dem councillors. But that even feels locally as complacency - and just the Lib Dem’s being neither Labour nor the Tories, particularly Labour (as it’s a Labour council and very much a Labour parliamentary constituency). There’s no local sense that anyone believes the Lib Dems stand for anything important. They’re like a placeholder.

bellinisurge · 09/01/2024 08:38

They get dosh from the makers of Lupron. They can literally go fuck themselves.

Winnading · 09/01/2024 08:46

We all remember nick Clegg? And the university fees thing. I think that was the end of lib dem. And for that alone they deserve to disband in ignominy. Then you get to recent years and the inability to know who is a woman and who isnt, well it's no wonder the party will die.

EweCee · 09/01/2024 08:49

Just send them the link to this thread.

PurplePim · 09/01/2024 08:51

You could add a link to this thread. I've never been a lib dem voter, but after their coalition with the Conservatives and with their blinkered and loudly dogmatic view on trans, I never will be. I'd rather spoil my ballot paper.

It's a shame. I know of several lib dem women who are trying to improve things and I'm amazed at their tenacity in the face of everything they're thrown. Incredible women.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 09/01/2024 08:55

Agree with all the above.

I used to have a LibDem MP (Simon Hughes) who back in the 80ss slugged it out with Peter Tatchell (Labour) for the seat. Simon's campaign was to slag off Peter for being gay.

Simon was a great MP. He actually helped people. But he was outed as Bisexual which really tainted how he got elected in the first place.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/another-day-another-lib-dem-disaster-hughes-admits-he-lied-about-his-sexuality-6110664.html

I think the problem with the Lib Dems is they take the "liberal" part too far. They want to be seen as progressive. But their stance is regressive for women, for children and for the disabled who need intimate care. That's why I stopped voting LibDem

(Neil Coyle (Labour) is now Bermondsey's MP and was caught a couple of times for being racist towards British Chinese people. He's since apologised, of course. I moved away years ago to a constituency with an MP with a massive Labour majority. Rock and hard place)

Bermondsey was the dirtiest, most violent British election of the 20th century – and we can learn from it today | Peter Tatchell

I suffered vile homophobia and more than 100 assaults before the poll, 40 years ago. But I also learned the value of grassroot politics, says writer and activist Peter Tatchell
