He's always supported single sex spaces apparently

Q: Are single-sex spaces safe under Labour?

"Yes, and I have been really clear and unwavering on this.
From my time as chief prosecutor, I worked with a whole bunch of people on violence against women and girls, and saw and know myself from my own observations just how important it is."

Strange, because he always seemed to me to be equivocating by talking about "safe spaces"

Can we trust him on this?

So do toilet cleaners. It's an unresolvable argument.

It's really not.
plus if the expectation was that all toilets are a free for all there wouldn't be "male cleaner working" signs posted

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/01/2024 15:06

He's on record as saying that we mustn't say that only women have a cervix. Some of his emotionally incontinent MPs & party members openly wage war on women - MPS, party members and others. They appear on stage with criminals who advocate VAWG, they advocate for male rapists being in prison cells with women, they operate open campaigns of silencing and harassment against women - including MPs.
He's completely silent about all of this and the unethical medial experimentation on children & the serial gaslighting of them in schools by adult transactivists telling them that they could be born in the wrong body & drugs and surgery can fix them.

Until he finds the courage to tackle this he'll never regain women's confidence.

northstars · 04/01/2024 15:07

KS is a cowardly mess. The worst part is him claiming to be “clear and unwavering on this” - I cannot think of two words which describe him LESS accurately than “clear and unwavering”. Not just on this topic, but in general. I don’t trust the man one bit.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 04/01/2024 15:10

Floisme · 04/01/2024 15:01

I'd have more time for him if he prefaced any comments with: 'I know we haven't always been clear on this in the Labour Party and I regret that.'

Trying to make out that they've always been 'clear and unwavering' just negates everything that follows.

And that's without even going into whether his shadow minister, Anneliese Dodds, knows the difference between single sex exemptions and exceptions.

Yes. He's a fool for not tackling this. It only takes one journalist to ask him which of his pronouncements was the lie - the idiotic "don't say only women have a cervix" or "we'll protect single sex spaces for those men with a cervix"?

Floisme · 04/01/2024 15:12

I have to say, trying to argue it's the same as toilet cleaners is a new one Grin

Ha yeh I think we can solve that one

Tallisker · 04/01/2024 15:16

What, Harpic is allowed in but Domestos isn't?

WorriedMutha · 04/01/2024 15:18

Labour are in a mess with this but I don't think there is any doubt they are trying to row back from the TRA bs but it means taking on that wing of the party that have partaken of the koolaid and TRA donations.
That means Kate Osborne, Dawn Butler and Angela Eagle need to suck it up.
Another nicely timed announcement today is Rosie Duffield has been cleared of the bs antisemitism charge trumped up against her and she expects to be the Canterbury candidate in the forthcoming election.

Quite. I was thinking: New Year, Same Old Bollocks but it's certainly a plot twist!

Flimpychunk · 04/01/2024 15:29

Some good news from Rosie duffield at least 💪🏾

He’s just going to ignore his whole topic

Good luck those who think he won’t be full on gender

Froodwithatowel · 04/01/2024 15:36

I'd suggest reading the 'web chat' with him that's here on MN when he was in the leadership race, and his answers and manner to largely left leaning women voters then. The measure of him is easily taken from that. As is his story about 'always'.

That one couldn't lie straight in bed.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 04/01/2024 14:50

What?? What's wrong with legal sex? I thought that was what we were fighting for, recognition that legal and documented sex is the correct way of grouping people not gender dictated by random feelings on any given weekday? What have I missed?

Because legal sex can include transgender .I do not trust Starmer at all !

morningtoncrescent62 · 04/01/2024 15:38

He needs to come down off that fence and give us some details. On what basis does he support single-sex services, facilities, data collection etc? Actual sex? Legal sex, ie. as modified through a GRC? Self-identified sex, ie whatever a person says their sex is? If a mix of these, can he clarify where he thinks actual sex matters, and will be respected?

I do think Labour are on the turn, but it's a massive tanker and at this stage, Keir's equivocation isn't helping. It still feels like a few incredibly brave women within the party (just seen the post about Rosie, hooray, but she shouldn't have been put through that ordeal) are dragging KS kicking and screaming to a more reasonable position. I intend to vote Labour because my candidate for the Westminster elections will speak up for women's rights (on the basis of sex) if she's elected, and given Labour will almost certainly form the next government, we need more good MPs inside the tent. But Keir's not making it easy, and speeches like this one aren't convincing.

RhannionKPSS · 04/01/2024 15:41

No, women still can’t trust him or Labour, he is a spineless piece of work & a liar, who continues to speak out of both sides of his mouth at the same time.

beatrix1234 · 04/01/2024 15:44

I can’t care less about what is a non issue, I just wished he would address labours plans to fix this mess of a country, that’s the real issue, not so much who gets to go to which toilet.

Froodwithatowel · 04/01/2024 15:44

While he's sitting on his bum, whistling and looking in the other direction while his women MPs are bullied and harassed and have male MPs plonking down in their space in the bloody HoC to rant at them for daring to speak about women's rights mattering too?

In effect supporting those male MPs and the kind of behaviour the average reception class kid would be consequenced for in a primary school?

I'd trust him a little less far than I can spit.

WitchyWitcherson · 04/01/2024 15:51

RE: Toilet cleaners

There are signs displayed to tell women that they may encounter a male in that area and therefore give women a choice as to whether they enter that space.

The toilet cleaner is known to the 'owner' of the toilet - for any inappropriate behaviour, there will be a clear path to report said inappropriate behaviour and the toilet cleaner will lose their job. Some companies may also perform criminal checks on the toilet cleaners to ensure there have been no sexual offences committed previously.

Trans-identified males using the bathroom won't be holding a mop, but their penis. And it's clear that many trans-identified males enjoy some kind of erotic thrill of being in the women's bathroom.

DisappearingGirl · 04/01/2024 15:52

Not being allowed to ask to see a GRC seems madness. What's the point of a legal document that no-one is allowed to see?

Winnading · 04/01/2024 15:54

beatrix1234 · 04/01/2024 15:44

Why would you think womens rights is a non issue?

50% of the population are affected often badly affected by any Male in a previously women only space.
Do you care about the women locked up with rapists? Or is it ok cos itll never happen to you?
Do you care about women only hospital wards and not being raped whilst in there? Or is it ok cos it wont happen to you?
Rape counselling, you ok to talk over your rape with a man or with a man in the room? Or again will this never affect you?

Floisme · 04/01/2024 15:56

I always find it puzzling when people insist something is a non issue, and yet take the trouble to open a thread and then write a comment and post it- all about something they couldn't care less about.

I always find it puzzling when someone opens a thread about “single sex spaces “ and the whole discussion is about defining gender ambiguity.

Single sex spaces. Nothing to do with safe spaces.

But as you know so much, please do tell what is required for a "safe" space

Typo, sorry, I meant “Single sex spaces”.

Mintygoodness · 04/01/2024 16:12

Anyone who can publicly claim that it's wrong and "shouldn't be said" that only women have a cervix and it's possible for a woman to have a penis has totally discredited themselves and can't be trusted as far as I am concerned. If you are willing to lie about biological facts what won't you say or accept? A total betrayal and abandonment of women.
