Trans woman named as UK champion for Women's Rights by the UN....

Outrage as trans woman picked by UN to be 'UK champion' for women's rights (msn.com)

"I will use this role to further advocate for the progress, safety, inclusion and empowerment of all women and girls, of all communities and identities.
"I will continue to draw attention to the systemic and social impact of misogyny, transphobia and gender-based inequality within the UK — in order to help provide data and insight that contributes to forming tangible methods of tracking and countering it." (Munroe Bergdorf)

Really?
How's that going to work then, when you don't like women talking about their own fucking bodies and call it crap like "gatekeeping" and "biological essentialism" etc.

Also quoted as saying anyone can be a woman.

How are you going to fight for their rights if you can't IDENTIFY what they are and anyone can be one?

Actually, they should just identify their way out of oppression and inequality, shouldn't they?
After all, it's that easy apparently.

I'm not deflated. This has done the UN far more damage than it's done women. If they'd chosen a female woman it would have been unnoticed but I think the " no such thing as bad publicity" trope is wrong when it comes to gender ideology. It plays in to Trump's hands as he can hold this sort of nonsense up as a reason the UN is an expensive irrelevance ran by numpties but this is a bad day for the UN not for us. I'm not sure it does Bergdorf any favours as Bergdorf's most misogynistic sayings come back to bite them on the bum

You make a good point

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 05/01/2024 10:36

Google was my friend and I have very politely let UN Women UK know that they've made a poor choice.

https://www.unwomenuk.org/contact/

I didn't complain about Bergdorf being male. To my mind a good champion could be any sex or gender. I only pointed out that being born male was no excuse for Bergdorf's behaviour.

I didn't say - but I do strongly suspect! - that they would not have appointed a biological woman who had ever said similar things about other women in public. Even women can have deeply internalised misogyny and sometimes the Bergdorfs of this world benefit from it.

I don't want to damage the UN. I just wish they wouldn't damage themselves.

Can I ask, what did you say to them? It’s hard in my mind to separate out a complaint from Bergdorf being biologically male.

Datun · 05/01/2024 14:28

As an aside, I'm getting really tired of hearing people refer to trans identified men simply as transgender - making no distinction between transmen and transwomen.

Obviously I would just prefer them to be called men. Failing that, men who identify as transgender. And failing that, transwomen.

But just saying transgender, which so many comments and reports do, could easily mean a woman.

It's got nothing to do with what they identify as, and everything to do with the fact that they're men.

And in this case highly misogynistic at that.

The fucking nerve of telling women in their own march, not to refer to their own biology because it leaves out men. Quite breathtaking really.

And as for understanding safeguarding, what a joke. There was that very enlightening clip of Julia Long asking Bergdorf about an 11 year old boy who was having money thrown at him, when twerking in a gay man's club. Bergdorf couldn't see anything wrong with it.

'We should let children do whatever they want', I believe was his conclusion.

Always the first rule of safeguarding, obviously.

I'll DM you the text.

There are two issues - choosing a TW and choosing this TW. Yes, there are strong arguments for not choosing a TW at all. But if you're going to choose a TW you might find one who's notable for how much for how much good work they've done for women and girls, and one who would never have been guilty of misogynist or homophobic attacks on women. Not one who's mostly notable for having been born male with a side order of shutting down women and saying offensive things in public.

Datun · 05/01/2024 14:57

Oh good call. It's the lowest of low bars, isn't?

If you're going to hire someone to represent women and girls, then on that basis, you will absolutely have evidence of the good work they've done to warrant it.

So let's see a transwoman with that evidence.

Even one.

Froodwithatowel · 05/01/2024 15:00

Ooh. How many names are on this shortlist?

Ten? Five?

Ten? Five?

I'm going to say zero.

I don't think there is a man on the planet who can actively promote sexist stereotypes by 'presenting as a woman' who could then possibly represent women and girls.

If you need to use sexism, you can't simultaneously eliminate it.

Froodwithatowel · 05/01/2024 19:22

I am struggling to think of any male we have seen take a representative post set aside for women and girls, on the grounds of identifying as a woman, who hasn't then immediately refocused the post away from women and women's needs and interests of being a voice for them, and used the position entirely to further their own interests and agenda.

We have had a Labour women's officer and the UN champion of women both explain to women than anything biologically linked to women is exclusionary to male people who identify as women and therefore cannot be part of their focus or role in representing women.

#thisneverworksforwomen.Ever.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 05/01/2024 20:44

No-one would ever contemplate appointing a white person as BAME rights champion even if they had worked tirelessly for equality but when it comes to womens rights trans women don't even have to claim to want to put women first and they get the position.

Is it notable that UN Women UK advertises safe spaces, not single sex spaces? But even if this a way around the EQ2010, who gets to say that the space is ‘safe’? Those running it? Or those needing it?

Safe Spaces Now - UN Women UK

We are launching a three-year change programme to create safe spaces across the UK. Our mission is for every woman and girl to have an equal right to Safety, Choice, and A Voice.

Edited

Helen Joyce has made some very clear statements about what a safe public toilet for women looks like and why it's not a row of unisex cubicles. Perhaps UN Women UK will need educating about that too.

Ginandjoy · 05/01/2024 22:39

Saw a horrible pic of this individual on Twitter posing naked with their fake boobs and penis out. What a horror show. Why should a pervert be allowed to represent women? 🥺

@PatienceTried A wonderful choice would have been someone like Onjali Rauf. An incredible woman, an award winning children's author, who relentlessly campaigns for women and girls.

Onjali Q Rauf - Author

Onjali Q. Raúf is an award winning children's author and activist. Her best selling debut, The Boy at the Back of the Class, was critically acclaimed and won the 2019 Blue Peter Book Award and Waterstones Children's Book Prize.

By the way Mumsnet, we are PERMITTED BY LAW to state a biological truth, namely, that trans women are not women. They are men.
And that it a legally protected statement upheld in court.

Couldn't be bothered to read all 5 pages, so sorry if others have pointed this out, but you have the right not to be fired for holding 'gender critical beliefs.' You don't have the right to spout them on any platform you choose. Mumsnet can delete comments on any basis they like, and organisations and venues are free to no platform whomever they like. I've had comments deleted that were perfectly legal. I didn't whine about it. Free speech doesn't mean you can spout off anywhere you like.

Websites might be able to but venues certainly can't.

It might be funnier if more of these 'women' did have their 'spout' off.
