Yes. It is gone 7pm and still no sign of this guidance. You do wonder...

noblegiraffe · 18/12/2023 20:44

The article said Tuesday.

Froodwithatowel · 18/12/2023 21:01

Very clear letter and guidance which could be summarised as 'other people have rights too'.

Awful piece on Sky News
https://news.sky.com/story/liverpool-school-makes-up-own-positive-transgender-policy-ahead-of-government-guidance-13033487

A school has said it is not going to change its policy on transgender pupils despite new government guidance on how teachers should support children who question their gender identity.
Chesterfield High School in Liverpool - a mixed comprehensive with 1,600 pupils with about 30 of them identifying as transgender, non-binary or genderfluid - has said it has made up its own policy while waiting for government guidance.

"I'm not going to change what has worked for our school for the last 10 years," Kevin Sexton, its executive headteacher, told Sky News.

Transgender support for schools: Liverpool headteacher says he'll make his own policy

The non-statutory draft government guidance advising schools and colleges in England has been promised since 2018, but its publication has been delayed since the summer, with discrepancies on how stringent it should be.

LOL

Hey, democratically elected government who makes education law and regulates schools on behalf of the tax payers who send their children there? Fuck you, we're making up our own laws.

Come on Westminster. You should have nipped this in the bud about 8 years ago.

I think Kevin Sexton should tell us why he's so keen on keeping secrets from parents? And why he doesn't know that only the courts can remove parental rights?

Surprisingly balanced guardian piece, though some concerning comments from teachers who conflate trans with gay. And there's a claim transphobic bullying has increased because it's so late out? Bullying should be tackled no matter what happens.

NEU spokesperson is unnamed.

Balanced as there's a cracking paragraph from Bayswater, pointing out it's not like being gay. And mentions Cass!

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2023/dec/19/englands-schools-must-be-involved-in-new-transgender-guidance-union-warns?CMP=ShareiOSAppp_Other

Bayswater is a support group for the parents of “trans-identified adolescents and young people” and has 650 members across the UK. “Schools need clear guidance because it is unacceptable to expect teachers to take decisions with such profound consequences for their students,” a spokesperson said.

“By viewing gender exclusively as a ‘civil rights’ issue, children with complex mental health problems and trauma have been failed by adults who should have been protecting them.
“Unlike sexual orientation, a trans identity is linked with likely medicalisation and high rates of comorbidities. Taking a student’s rejection of their natal sex at face value, rather than being curious and compassionate about what might have led them there, is a safeguarding failure that all of us should care about, regardless of our political affiliation.”
A DfE spokesperson said: “The upcoming guidance will help safeguard pupils and crucially ensure that parents are involved in decisions relating to their child, as the Cass Revieww
has made clear that any degree of social transition could have significant consequences for children. It will be published in due course.”

R4 have been covering this in their news headlines since coming on air this morning. Today are planning to interview a teacher shortly.

WarriorN · 19/12/2023 06:55

Thanks!

WarriorN · 19/12/2023 06:58

Latest segment Starts at 6:44 on today programme

WarriorN · 19/12/2023 07:00

No 6:53.

It's mentioned as the headline at 6:44

WarriorN · 19/12/2023 07:06

They will be interviewing a parent at 7:30

What's annoying me about Lucy Lakin, a principal who is talking, is that she seems to be saying that schools have been dealing with this and can manage safeguarding- without acknowledging that this is a new issue that's not been recognised as being safeguarding issue.

BettyFilous · 19/12/2023 07:37

The R4 coverage will be waking up a large swathe of the population to what’s going on in our schools. Many will be surprised to hear school representatives leading the charge with parents almost as an afterthought.

Agreed. Couldn't understand if the parent of a son had a boy who id'd as a girl or not. Also couldn't understand if the father did or did not object to labelling disabled loos differently / with an additional label.

The mother they had on before was very clear in her experience.

ResisterRex · 19/12/2023 08:03

Has anyone any examples of schools or government guidance that is "seeking to be oppositional or adversarial" as per the comment of the school rep they had on?

I think the 2nd parent had a daughter who identified as a son. The parent wasn't stupid enough to want their 12 yo female child using the boys toilet but didn't want the child to use a disabled toilet. The solution they suggested was to add a gender neutral sign next to the disabled toilet so the child would use the disabled toilet but it would ok if it had a different sign outside. What an idiot, how did we get here?

HoneyButterPopcorn · 19/12/2023 08:06

I was wondering too about the disabled dad who said that his child should just use disabled loos… oh the irong (child is not disabled).

The child doesn’t want to use the loos because they aren’t disabled and know they aren’t entitled to use them. The child is biologically female - the ‘be kind’ sex. Funny that.

This child is at risk in mens loos and changing areas. In school is one thing - but when they go out?

What about the boys? They don’t really want girls wandering past urinals, sharing showering/changing areas. What about their feelings (not to mention fear of being accused of sexual abuse etc)?

WarriorN · 19/12/2023 08:10

Was he suggesting put gender neutral next to disabled??

He contradicted himself hugely

No just to change the sign

EasternStandard · 19/12/2023 08:15

I thought he wanted sign to say gender neutral & disabled?

Yes. Which does change the sign IMO. It's no longer just for disabled people is it?!

I thought he wanted sign to say gender neutral & disabled?

He said "all it needs is putting a gender neutral sign next to a disabled toilet" so maybe he wants both signs or maybe just one.

EasternStandard · 19/12/2023 08:20

I think it was because his son felt bad, wouldn’t go to the loo during school and he wanted that to change

(Not sure if girl or boy)
