Oh dear. What a shame. Never mind.

Gray was an excellent candidate and I'm glad he's won. Izzard never stood a chance. Look up his 'broken record' campaign, he's as tenacious as they come.

I think, regardless of where one stands in the gender debate, Eddie would have been a good candidate, no doubt about his hard work, commitment and drive to get things done. Although I am gender critical, I agree that these threads can become personal and toxic.

I agree entirely about his capacity for hard work. His stand-up routines must have taken a long time to hone and master. Imagine the effort that would have gone into all those marathons. And so on. I don't think he's afraid of hard work.

On the other hand, to be an MP you need to be a team player, and that's the one thing I'm pretty sure he's not. For the most part being an MP isn't glamorous, it's answering constituents' letters, holding surgeries, sitting in endless boring meetings, attending House of Commons debates and so on. You don't even get to do your own thing - most of the time you vote the way your party whips tell you.

If there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that Izzard would actually hate being an MP.

If Izzard doesn't have ADHD I'd be pretty amazed. Izzard is able to hyper focus on tasks and issues he likes and take them to the extreme. So he can work hard, but lacks the discipline / ability to work on the details, prefering to wing it and improvise when it suits his attention span. Its not that he's unintelligent - he clearly is intelligent but he can't do coherent because his thought jump around all over the place - which was great for his style of comedy but not for forming powerful political arguments.

More than this for the everyday slog of dealing with constituents who have various and often rather dull issues, he'd be lost and just wouldn't bother because it just doesn't grab his interest and attention.

He reminds me a great deal of Sheffield Hallam's previous MP Jared O'Mara in many respects. He was picked in haste by the Labour Party in an emergency selection process due to a snap election - his identity as disabled being one thing that favoured his choice - and then won Nick Clegg's seat in a result that shocked everyone. His time in Parliament can best be described as a 'total car crash' to put it mildly as it quickly became apparent he was totally unsuited to the job.

I think if Izzard did become an MP, he'd become a total liability and distraction for the Labour Party at some point, because he'd be unable to keep his gob shut when appropriate / expected as he has a reputation for running his mouth off. He's become the story rather than issues being the narrative. No leader is really going to want that if they've got any sense.

Izzard has been going through the normal selection process at present. As it stands, the Labour Party probably will have selections all done by the time of a GE - expectations are to be ready by April / May 2024 - rather than being caught by surprise and need to go through an Emergency Selection Process like in 2017, but I'd still keep an eye on if an election is called suddenly. Thats when there may be a chance to stand in a constituency which hasn't got a candidate might crop up at the last minute.

Woah... I didn't realise that was Tom Gray of Gomez.

He's one smart fellow.

ShortMotherfuckerWithTheIvoryHair · 18/12/2023 23:15

So Izzard intends to fully transition when he becomes a politician and will give up acting? So when he doesn't need to be in boy mode for those lucrative acting roles then. It's all performative and about his ego.

SamW98 · 19/12/2023 07:41

I used to really like Eddie. I loved the fact he didn’t seem to give a shit what anyone thought and was just a bloke who wore what he liked.

I took my son to a football match about 9-10 years ago. It was a London derby so not the most PC and inclusive of environments

Ive still got the photo on my phone of my son with Eddie. He’s dressed like a normal football supporting bloke - replica shirt jeans abc trainers but with a full face of slap and nail polish. And i thought ‘good on you’

Really disappointed he’s turned out to be an arrogant self obsessed prick who thinks he can jump from male to female when it suits.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 19/12/2023 07:48

No no you don’t understand! The reason he didn’t win is because he’s too beautiful and kind to be an MP 🤪<a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/2023.12.18-121302/www.independent.co.uk/voices/eddie-suzy-izzard-labour-brighton-sheffield-nec-trans-b2465841.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">The independent

Great article by Jean Hatchet.

@Theeyeballsinthesky
Izzard – who prefers to go by the name Suzy and to use the pronouns she/her, but doesn't mind "he/him" and has said she will be "remaining Eddie Izzard in public"

Just that is such a nonsense.

It's so Wurzel Gummidge with a new head.

SinnerBoy · 19/12/2023 11:20

I see it as a marketing ploy for him, he gets to scam some tick boxes and all the hand wringers feel compelled to support the bugger. I mean these days, it's not as if anyone can check and see that he always said he was a man, until very recently, when that went down the memory hole.

Or when he (as he brags) chased three teenaged girls out of the loos; that alone ought to render him unfit for public office.

Really? As well as being a blow in with no connection to the seat, he's also on the right of the Labour Party. That's not likely to win in Brighton. He was a bad fit.

AlphaBravoGamma · 19/12/2023 12:23

Who put him forward? I know that in London, the shortlist is chosen by London Region Labour group from the longlist. Is it the NEC who choses Brighton?

PorcelinaV · 20/12/2023 12:12

It's not illegal to be transvestitephobic.

Except in Scotland, where "stirring up hate" against people of transgender identity is now a crime, and by people of trans identity they mean:

(a)a female-to-male transgender person,

(b)a male-to-female transgender person,

(c)a non-binary person,

(d)a person who cross-dresses

So just be careful if you go to Scotland and start expressing wrongthink about transvestites. It could get you into deep water.

Could you get in trouble for being critical of public cross dressing with a sexual motivation?

RainbowZebraWarrior · 20/12/2023 12:57

Wurzel Gummidge with a new head pretty much sums it up.

When he says 'fully transition' he doesn't mean actual surgery though does he? He just means not flitting back and forth between girl mode and boy mode yeah? So, yes, once it's no longer convenient to have those options in his acting career as a PP said.

Howsoon23 · 21/12/2023 20:55

Was following the selection, Tom Gray was easily the best and will be a massive asset to a labour govement, he is serious and has a great policy track record ef - i expect will get on front bench pretty fast - to be fair to Eddie he has worked hard for the party but would make an awful MP - also unless non local candidates are are amazing its very hard to get selected over a local one. Labour is in process of selecting for all of its seats so hopeful ly will be very few last minute ones. Leadership seem to be looking for safe pair of hands in general cant imagine eddie would be viewed as that

puffyisgood · 21/12/2023 21:36

if it's any consolation to Eddie, his beloved crystal palace are so far tonight beating their hated rivals (ie Brighton) 1-0 💪
