He did a sketch of being a vampire and everyone keeping him away with crossed fingers. So he was constantly being fended off like a high street market researcher. For some reason this reminds me of that sketchXmas Grin

Sheffield, crossed fingers - aarrgghhh!
Brighton, crossed fingers - aarrggghh!

Where next? Hyde? Might get some use out of that, apparently, dreadful film.

As a general rule, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to have an MP from outside the area if they're a good candidate. I'd prefer someone competent from the other side of the country to an incompetent local. IME, though, constituency parties will often choose the local candidate in preference to the outsider.

Izzard's mistake was to demonstrate that he was clearly in it for the glory rather than because he cared about local issues. He hasn't put in the years as a constituency activist or councillor, going round delivering leaflets, answering people's questions about bin collections, sitting in boring ward meetings and so on. He is, quite clearly, still committed to his comedy and acting career, having decided to do Hamlet in New York and saying he will campaign over Zoom from the US rather than give up the job.

By contrast, Glenda Jackson seems to have been genuinely dedicated to the constituency she represented and to have been a popular local MP.

lifeturnsonadime · 18/12/2023 09:53

Well that is good news.

But it's likely to be because he's not on board with local issues rather than because he imposes himself on women.

MargotBamborough · 18/12/2023 09:59

What an interesting juxtaposition of the "she" pronoun with the name Eddie and not Suzy.

Almost as if no one would have ever heard of Suzy Izzard.

Anyway, I actually have mixed feelings about this one. I think seeing Izzard selected as the Labour candidate in Brighton would have shone some much needed light on this issue.

And I know Caroline Lucas is standing down anyway but I wonder whether she might rethink her TWAW status if her own seat went to Izzard.

Janinejones · 18/12/2023 10:11

On the other hand if he had become the candidate he would have been kept very busy. Now we don't know where he will pop up with next and what he will be on about.

LightToTheWorld · 18/12/2023 10:14

I think standing for public office is admirable, even if unsuccessfully. Being selected in a winnable seat is hard and there’s no shame in not being selected.

I don't judge him for not being selected.

I do judge him for his horrible attitude towards women.

I also judge him on his horrible attitude towards women.

No decent man would think it OK to use the women's toilets, therefore he is not a decent man.

I'm glad there are still standards being applied at local level and not everyone is pathetically hypnotised by the allure of "celebrity".

Fraaahnces · 18/12/2023 10:39

@Boiledbeetle doesnt help that he looks like his scratching his balls in this photo

SirChenjins · 18/12/2023 10:44

But..but…don’t they know he’s stunning and brave??

Great news - enough is enough.

WickedSerious · 18/12/2023 10:56

Oh no,this has ruined Christmas.

Do people think he’d have succeeded if he weren’t claiming he’s a “woman”?

I can’t tell if it’s a big factor or if it was more that he’s arrogant and doing local politics badly.

No, I don't.

Eddie hasn't shown any interest in the local politics of the places he's trying to represent and seems to rather despise activists who focus on this, which can't go down very well with local selection committees.

I know my own MP, Layla Moran, won't be everyone's cup of tea on here but she put in a huge amount of work getting her face known in the constituency before getting elected and then increasing her majority when in. That's really what you have to do.

Exactly. I understand that Eddie's answers to questions at the hustings were very weak indeed, and that was the major contributory factor to Eddie not being selected.

I went looking for the info on who placed where and found this. Really depressing that 2 women were voted in the bottom 2 places.

Sheila Jeffreys' Gender Hurts on sex castes would predict this.

Ben GNC Centric cast an interesting sidelight on this. Ben is a detransitioned dysphoric lesbian and previously identified as transgender during her teens (transboy and transman). In this talk with Benjamin Boyce, she highlights important issues (based on her experiences) within the community when age, sex and their power asymmetries were disregarded in a way that recalls emphasises Jeffreys and her work on sex castes. (Middleaged transwomen led and spoke over them at 'youth gatherings' and told them to shut up and listen because transwomen identified themselves at the apex of the oppression hierarchy, and teenage transboys are at the foot. Morgan Page was a leader of a youth group Ben attended.)

I don't have anything to add to the general drift of posts here, but re-reading the original post by KitchenDancefloor

I have to commend the use of words and punctuation - seven words and three full stops, says it all. Brilliant!🙂

Not surprising. Far too controversial at a crucial time.

Yes. It was a perfect reply.
I just thought DB was a realist, so very taken aback by his comment.

DameMaud · 18/12/2023 12:08

I like this reply too:

Whether in boy mode or girl mode, Eddie/Suzy, comedian/actor/activist, is the kind of decisive decision maker we need in times of uncertainty.

AlanHenness · 18/12/2023 12:09

Oh dear. How sad. Never mind.

CurlewKate · 18/12/2023 12:21

I'm actually surprised that his political career hasn't gone well- he certainly used to be articulate and well informed.
