Do people think he’d have succeeded if he weren’t claiming he’s a “woman”?

I can’t tell if it’s a big factor or if it was more that he’s arrogant and doing local politics badly.

I don't think you can divide the 2 things. One seems to lead to the other. And back again with him.

So after a great long thread slagging off Eddie Izzard for standing in Brighton I can see this will be a great long thread slagging him off for not winning and no doubt transphobic and vile like the last one.

Give over 🙄

I went looking for the info on who placed where and found this. Really depressing that 2 women were voted in the bottom 2 places.

Sheila Jeffreys' Gender Hurts on sex castes would predict this.

Ben GNC Centric cast an interesting sidelight on this. Ben is a detransitioned dysphoric lesbian and previously identified as transgender during her teens (transboy and transman). In this talk with Benjamin Boyce, she highlights important issues (based on her experiences) within the community when age, sex and their power asymmetries were disregarded in a way that recalls emphasises Jeffreys and her work on sex castes. (Middleaged transwomen led and spoke over them at 'youth gatherings' and told them to shut up and listen because transwomen identified themselves at the apex of the oppression hierarchy, and teenage transboys are at the foot. Morgan Page was a leader of a youth group Ben attended.)

Gosh. Middle aged 'women' getting to speak over young 'men'?

It's almost like they know who the REAL men and women are.

TeaMistress · 18/12/2023 12:37

It's the right result. Eddie Izzard is not the best candidate for the job.

IncompleteSenten · 18/12/2023 12:39

Good.
Clowns are already massively overrepresented in politics.

Please feel free to report any actual transphobia to MNHQ,
they’ll happily delete it for you.
Remember though, women discussing material reality is not transphobic.
HTH.

I also judge him on his horrible attitude towards women.

No decent man would think it OK to use the women's toilets, therefore he is not a decent man.

Ffs! Is he actually adjusting his penis in a queue for the ladies loos?

I'm actually surprised that his political career hasn't gone well- he certainly used to be articulate and well informed.

Yes, but he also used to be thoughtful and apparently feminist.
I agree that when he first announced it I thought there would be no stopping him, at least at getting to MP level. But I assumed he was properly committed.

I'll slag him off as much as I want to thanks.

I've always been transvestitephobic, and for damn good reason.

It's not illegal to be transvestitephobic.

SinnerBoy · 18/12/2023 12:55

What a tragic loss for Brighton!

TheGreatGherkin · 18/12/2023 12:56

Trans issue aside, Eddie simply has not got the gravitas to be an MP. On any political debate eg Question Time, he comes across as an absolute tool and often seems hopelessly out of his depth.

RoyalCorgi · 18/12/2023 13:01

It's not illegal to be transvestitephobic.

Except in Scotland, where "stirring up hate" against people of transgender identity is now a crime, and by people of trans identity they mean:

(a)a female-to-male transgender person,

(b)a male-to-female transgender person,

(c)a non-binary person,

(d)a person who cross-dresses

So just be careful if you go to Scotland and start expressing wrongthink about transvestites. It could get you into deep water.

lechiffre55 · 18/12/2023 13:16

I don't get how rubber tits are "being your true self".
Surely your true self is what you were born with.

ShortMotherfuckerWithTheIvoryHair · 18/12/2023 13:22

It's almost as if being an MP means you have to do something, rather than just identify as an MP. Who'd have thunk it?

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2023 13:47

Since the referendum, every time Eddie Izzard has open his (yep this pronoun is approved) mouth, I've though 'DICK'.

Anyone who has the effect of making me think 'There is someone worse on my TV box than Nigel Farage', has a personality and ego problem. I don't really care about their sex once they've crossed that threshold.

Hicc · 18/12/2023 14:36

I'm a non-active member of the Labour Party who lives in Pavilion ward.
I wasn't able to go to the hustings so have no idea what the four candidates were asked or how they came across.

I did email them a set of questions last week re women's rights and trans ideology. Only the two female candidates replied. Neither are remotely GC, sadly.

Speaking to Tom Gray on the phone, he certainly indicated he knew that biology was real, but I was disappointed he wouldn't expand on these views by answering any of my emailed questions.

Izzard did not respond to my questions either. So the two leading candidates were too scared to set out their stalls, while the female candidates were at least clear, but sadly misguided.

I think Gray was the best candidate and I'm pleased he won. The idea of Izzard as my constituency MP fills me with horror. As does the idea of Sian Berry in the role.

Caroline Lucas has been an excellent constituency MP, and while we have discussed GC issues and she says she disagrees with my views, I am pretty convinced she gets it and is in the closet. I'm hoping for some frankness from her once she steps down

rockstarshoes · 18/12/2023 14:49

Maybe Suzie just needs to switch on boy mode & try again? 🤷‍♀️

Certainly works for highly paid acting roles! 🙄

mumda · 18/12/2023 14:50

@Hicc probably feels unable to reply to anything in writing knowing he could potentially be hounded out of society for believing in something as sensible as biology.

I think, regardless of where one stands in the gender debate, Eddie would have been a good candidate, no doubt about his hard work, commitment and drive to get things done. Although I am gender critical, I agree that these threads can become personal and toxic.

FKATondelayo · 18/12/2023 15:12

Poor Eddie, he always wanted to have gravitas and be a Serious Actorrr and a Serious Politician but ironically he would be much more respected if he stuck with stand-up comedy.

I was listening to Alexei Sayle's Imaginary Sandwich Bar (BBC Sounds) last night and there is an episode where he lays into Eddie and other standups who want to do politics. Something along the lines of "Eddie Izzard ran 9 marathons in 9 days which just goes to prove...running a marathon must be a lot easier than it looks."

(I don't agree with Alexei on many things - Corbyn for one - but he has always put being funny ahead of being morally or politically pure. He has no fear about taking the piss out of himself or his political allies.)

Really?

Eddie has made some really awful, dismissive comments about women who have concerns about single sex spaces and safeguarding.

Basically just dismissed them all as dinosaur bigots and implied that they will go away if everyone ignores them for long enough.

I would have absolutely no confidence in his ability to represent female constituents in parliament.

From what I read, he was planning to use his time as MP to transition, so the main commitment and drive to get things done would not have been for his constituents, but for himself.

Izzard said that when he became an MP, he'd start transitioning properly. Cos he thought he would have lots of free time.

he knew nothing about local issues, and had a three month Broadway residency lined up in January. Hardly suggests commitment. He did say he'd cancel his theatre run if he was selected- which sounds very unlikely, what with the legal ramifications

Doesn't say much about Labour's commitment to workers if one of their candidates is happy to put a stage crew out of work if their political career takes off.
