Specifically "Some like it hot" and one part of "Crocodile Dundee". Both on this week.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom for racism.

Short Circuit for brownface actor.

Rocky Horror Picture Show 😁

Have you seen the 2016 remake? It has a transwoman playing Frank-n-furter. It led to DC and I having a discussion about if a transwoman can play a transvestite.

Because if TWAW then they can't. Can they?

Psycho

The Silence of the Lambs

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

I think Some Like It Hot was actually incredibly progressive for the late 50s, it was released in 1960 I believe.

The "nobody's perfect" line is subversive, turning the joke on Jerry because Osgood knew all along that he was a man and still wanted to marry him. Osgood didn't treat "Dafne" like a man in drag but as a woman, and was depicted to have a taste for the unusual...zowie!!!

2pence · 12/12/2023 04:28

It's also interesting to note that the inspiration for Breakfast at Tiffany's Holly Golightly was Marilyn Monroe. Truman Capote based the character on Monroe's own upbringing in foster homes and her arranged teenage marriage so she didn't have to go back into care.

Ironically the film could be made with Monroe nowadays but at the time the producers knew that they wouldn't be able to disguise Holly's prostitution as well as they did with Audrey Hepburn in the role.

There are also transgender prostitutes in the background of Holly's party if you look closely in those scenes.

Reading this thread makes me want to buy DVDs of all the films to keep in a secret stash of "banned films" for when the memory hole is law.

Of course we need a lot of books stashed away somewhere too. Nearly all the books.

Also, it's a long time since I last watched the Aristocats. Can someone enlighten me what offensive content requires a warning?

@FannyCann with The Aristocats I'm pretty sure that it will be the Siamese cats, you know, they do the song 'We are Siamese if you please'. It's considered to be an offensive stereotype of East Asian people. (yes I know they're cats).

I do find it offensive actually and wouldn't want kids to be exposed to it. A shame because the rest of the film was quite cute I think , although I don't remember it that well.

Hope I am not getting mixed up with 'Lady and the Tramp'.

2pence · 12/12/2023 04:37

You are getting it mixed up with Lady and the Tranp @Pemba .

I think it's the depiction of Scat Cat's band with the offensive stereotypes in Aristocats.

Pemba · 12/12/2023 04:42

Oh! Thanks @2pence . I need to brush up on my Disney films Grin

I was watching Aristocats on Disney + a few weeks ago and it started with a very Grim and Serious content warning that this had Bad Content that was Not Okay and They Apologized [sic].
I mean at least they didn't cut the offensive clip like they do in every CD/digital MP3 version of Ev'rybody Wants to Be A Cat.

I watched Gone With the Wind a couple of weeks ago and there was a huuuuuge apology notice at the beginning.

PermanentTemporary · 12/12/2023 06:08

I don't see the problem with a notice that the content is offensive now, if they still show the film? Gone with the Wind IS offensive. Also fascinating, beautiful and a great story, but it's hideously offensive in lots of ways! I'd rather that was publicly acknowledged.

beguilingeyes · 12/12/2023 06:17

Pretty Woman. The happy hooker?
I love it and young Julia Roberts to death, but the premise was sketchy even then.

Leafysuburb · 12/12/2023 06:29

99% of Disney although that doesn't stop the awful live action remakes.

Police Academy for homophobia.

Back to the Future for the incest element.

Cannonball Run for... probably something.

I loved Cannonball Run (and II), haven’t seen them in years! Cannonball Run II would definitely be cancelled for putting Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin and Dom Deluise in drag!

Slightly off-topic and nothing to do with feminism, but have you seen the American TV programme Forged In Fire? Like Bake Off, only the contestants make knives - it would never be made here. The tagline of one of the judges is "It will kill".

I absolutely love it. As do most of the women I work with. I dont know if it because it is about craft and creating. Or when the weapon they are making develops a chip or crack and they go 'I dont think it will matter, I will cover it up'. And we are like 'have you never watched this programme before mate, your weapon is gonna crash and burn'.

RethinkingLife · 12/12/2023 08:28

I find most films from the 70s onwards unwatchable because of the sexism | male gaze etc.

I'm largely fine with Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, and a fair number of Cary Grant films. (The haze of memory may be kicking in here.)

SheWasYar · 12/12/2023 08:35

Interesting @RethinkingLife I found the those screwball comedies really comforting in the 90s when studying & working in engineering.
The strong women using humour to negotiate an obviously sexist world. A great alternative to the straight use of ' feminine wiles' that the majority of films seemed to rely on.

nothingcomestonothing · 12/12/2023 08:40

We watched Nativity 2 at the weekend. David Tennant's character is asked if his soon to be born baby is a boy or girl. Another character pipes up 'or it could be an inbetweeny' and Tennant firmly says 'you don't get those'. Wonder if he'd be happy to say that line now?

Mel Brooks' 1967 film The Producers
If there's one thing they don't like today, it's taking the piss out of pompous self important people.

The Producers (1968) - Springtime for Hitler

Wonderful scene from the original version of The Producers (1968). Mel Brooks created one of the gems of American cinema and this is probably the best scene ...

Is truth in art really offensive? Yes, Margaret Mitchell was a raging snob and racist who was nostalgic for the old South, which is part of what gives the book and the film their emotional power. But despite the author, the works still tell the truth about how Africans were brutalised, women kept powerless, and wealth misrepresented as a proxy for virtue. To ignore all that, and instead get offended because the slaves are depicted as ignorant, the women as manipulative, and the poor whites as slovenly, is to completely miss the point.

Sausagenbacon · 12/12/2023 11:40

There is a correlation between spunky (another outdated word!) Heroines and the political situation. I believe that we saw a plethora of gutsy heroines when men were at war but, later, when women were supposed to retreat back to the home, they disappeared.
But of course that could be absolutely balls. So do correct me if I'm wrong.
Whatever Gone with the Winds faults, it had the great virtue of giving us an unlikeable heroine. And making you root for her. The only other fictional character like that being Beccy Sharpe.

I would never joke about such things.

Mrs Doubtfire - I’ve seen TRA comments that it’s transphobic due to the way the son reacts to seeing MrsD pee standing up 🤣

Wait until they read the book.
I'm going to spoiler it for everyone. The book version of Mrs Doubtfire does NOT have a happy ending.

I still love Love Actually despite all its obvious faults.
