Specifically "Some like it hot" and one part of "Crocodile Dundee". Both on this week.

As it's Christmas I give you Miracle on 34th Street. It would be literal murder for anyone to question the identity of the man known as Santa Claus, wouldn't it - or is it only gender identities that cant be questioned? .

How about It’s a Wonderful Life? In the alternate universe where James Stewart had never lived, his wife had become - shock! - a spinster librarian!

Ingenieur · 11/12/2023 20:11

Ace Ventura is still worth a watch.

Finkle is Einhorn!

MrsR87 · 11/12/2023 20:13

All of the Carry On films! I love them
but they definitely wouldn’t be made today!

It wrecked her eyesight as well.

Blazing Saddles is a masterpiece (par for the course with Mel Brooks though). My dad once got Gene Wilder to wish me happy birthday by emailing in when he was on Simon Mayo’s Radio 5 show years ago. I nearly died of happiness!

Anytime someone mentions badges (particularly pronoun ones 😜) I have to bite my tongue to stop myself declaring: “Badges! We don’t need no stinking badges!”

Agree that The Goonies wouldn’t get made now - I was very flustered when Cory Feldman was telling the Spanish lady about the sex dungeon in Mikey’s basement - definitely didn’t recall that from my childhood!

Of more recent films, you’d never get away with the likes of American Pie these days!

SamW98 · 11/12/2023 20:29

I’m sure if Pricilla Queen Of The Desert is ever remade it’ll only be with trans actors - I mean heterosexual men pretending to be drag queens and a TW how dare they 😱

Flash Gordon has been cancelled! For having "outdated attitudes, language and cultural depictions which may cause offence today"

Flash!

Ah aa!!! King of the impossible!

NoCloudsAllowed · 11/12/2023 20:59

I mean, all of the things from the past are dated, that's how history works

I watched Bridget Jones for the first time the other day, as well as the sexist twaddle there are a few 'i accidentally shagged a transwoman' moments that you're supposed to find hilarious. And the gay friend character is hackneyed and paper thin. Kind of glad they don't make them like that now tbh, you'd feel awful watching it if you were gay or trans.

I love Flash Gordon, it has Brian Blessed, amazing outfits and Timothy Dalton in very tight trousers.

Three things I could watch all day.

winowin · 11/12/2023 21:05

Police academy.
Trading places.

barbieofswanlake · 11/12/2023 21:06

@ApocalipstickNow it's totally stuck in my head now Smile

ZekeZeke · 11/12/2023 21:07

Tootsie
9 to 5

CaveMum · 11/12/2023 21:09

Mrs Doubtfire - I’ve seen TRA comments that it’s transphobic due to the way the son reacts to seeing MrsD pee standing up 🤣

TitusMoan · 11/12/2023 21:10

Came on to say Tootsie. The Dustin Hoffman speech to Jessica Lange, in which he apologises for deceiving her, would be taken as a ‘coming out as trans’ speech by some of the TRAs these days.

ScottBakula · 11/12/2023 21:28

@winowin ahh I was trying to think of that title when posting up thread. It's a great film .

Sausagenbacon · 11/12/2023 15:34

I love Some Like it Hot which was, and always will be, a masterpiece. But remember that, even then, it was placed outside of the period it was created, by making it in black and white.
I give you Blazing Saddles. Another masterpiece.
Or, another favourite, Pillow Talk.

Is Pillow Talk the one with the "You are my inspiration [insert name of current girl here]" song?

Gordon's ALIVE!!!

Reddog1 · 11/12/2023 22:45

The makeup on Tootsie was extraordinary, fair play. i agree that the story would be hijacked today though.

FannyCann · 11/12/2023 22:51

Reading this thread makes me want to buy DVDs of all the films to keep in a secret stash of "banned films" for when the memory hole is law.

Of course we need a lot of books stashed away somewhere too. Nearly all the books.

Also, it's a long time since I last watched the Aristocats. Can someone enlighten me what offensive content requires a warning?

Mycatsbigtoe · 11/12/2023 23:05

American Beauty. Adored it when I saw it at the cinema. Now it just gives me the ick. Kevin Spacey is in it too.

Sausagenbacon · 11/12/2023 23:41

Yes!
Plus Rock Hudson playing a character who is pretending to be gay. While at the same time behind secretly gay himself.
I actually love it because of Day's wonderful costumes.

Sausagenbacon · 11/12/2023 23:41

And, yes, American Beauty is rather off, watching it now.

PorcelinaV · 12/12/2023 01:48

Police Academy for homophobia.

Back to the Future for the incest element.

Cannonball Run for... probably something.
