Tory deputy chair Rachel Maclean accused of transphobic remarks www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hereford-worcester-67650988

Harsh and rude, but not actually untrue. If the person only started transitioning last year, they won't have a GRC yet, so will be classed as legally male, surely?

He's more of a lesbian than YOU'LL ever be!

And similar misremembered playground chants...

"It's dog whistling of the finest. It's gaslighting. It does have an impact on people."

How is it gaslighting? Does Melissa think that Rachel is manipulating her constituents into questioning their sanity by referring to Melissa as a man, because Melissa is so clearly a woman, and any rational person can see that Melissa is a woman (because clothes etc.), so calling her a man is some kind of psychological manipulation? I don't get it.

🤔Or is it just that people throw expressions like "dog whistle" and "gas lighting" around when they don't like what someone is saying but are incapabale of coming up with a proper argument against it.

It’s ridiculous, isn’t it?

Just more word salad to try to make it hard to challenge them.

There’s no ‘dogwhistle’ when it’s an unambiguously critical statement about exactly the issue it seems to be about. Ni hidden messages or secret agenda.

And gaslighting 🙄. Appropriating the language of abuse in this way really trivialises the experience of actual psychological abuse the term gaslighting is referring to.

Someone not agreeing with you, openly and in plain language, is not gaslighting.

I have a theory, based on the the Danish political drama Borgen, in which the former Danish PM decides to found a new political party. The idea is really popular with the public; however, initially, when the party calls for people to join and help fight the election, it attracts tons of people who see this new party as a vehicle for their particular obsession/hobby horse. These new members attempt to force the party to adopt their views as official policy (but are successfully fought off).

I think the resurgence of interest in environmental politics has caused something like this to happen in Green parties - lots of donations and lots of new people joining who aren’t strongly interested in environmentalism but see the Green parties as a good vehicle for advancing their particular hobby horse and, in each country, the Greens failed to successfully stick to their core principles and have been taken over.

The same thing happened to the lib dems. After the coalition, as councillors and activists retired or became disillusioned, others saw an opportunity to be there as it rebuilt itself. There was little pushback against bonkers policies because there wasn't many there to hold any standards.

I read 'gaslighting' and 'dog whistle' and rolled my eyes. As you might imagine. It's a script.

Thank you! I was wracking my brain, wondering where I'd seen that face before. You've saved me the trouble of googling 'frogs in wigs'.

I saw Princess Fiona in the BBC article. That must be his panto look.

PaterPower · 08/12/2023 22:43

I’m also puzzled as to how the statement qualified as “gaslighting”.

Yet another sign of how far this bloke has removed himself from reality.

GoatsareGOAT · 08/12/2023 23:25

Maybe he said gaslighting because he can't say it's untrue??!

This stuck out to me - "Mrs Maclean, who was elected as MP for Redditch in 2017, served as minister for safeguarding in the Home Office between 2021 and 2022."

IcakethereforeIam · 10/12/2023 10:36

Straight, white, men that well known minority. He doesn't sound that bright.

Hey it takes balls to be a man in a dress.

It's things like this that make the tories look more attractive.

What are we all going to wear when we go to the polls to vote in the tories, girls?? I can't wait till they get in for another term and get to talk about men in wigs! Like totally, girls!

Datun · 10/12/2023 12:58

Oh lord.

'it's transphobic, it's dog whistling, it's whistling, it's gaslighting, it's everything, it's a minority, yeah it's all of it'

"How are you not mortified to post this embarrassing shite?"

🤣🤣🤣

PoppyCup · 10/12/2023 13:03

He is one very confused individual. He doesn't know what party politics he stands for. He doesn't know that he is a man not a woman.

I don't want him in charge of anything remotely important.

Plato was right when he said only those who don't seek power deserve it.

The other thread on this chap was deleted I think.

Their pathetic contempt for women is in plain sight. So apparently wearing a pigtail wig is one step closer to being a girl.

And wearing panties, smile when a men makes eye contact, practice sitting like a girl, wear a dress and worst of all - obey.

They really see women as nothing more than objects for the gratification of men. And yet politicians are falling over themselves to defend these sleazy creeps.

Seriously do the enablers really think this is absolutely ok and we’re the ones full of hate for pointing out what’s in front of everyone’s eyes?

IcakethereforeIam · 11/12/2023 20:39

His poor wife. I'm glad she got away from him.

ilovegreen · 11/12/2023 21:05

The enablers are the most harmful in this. Bullying women and getting away with it.
