"Period experiencing humans"

Hope this is the right place. Like many others I've learned a lot from these boards and receiving an email with this language today from ModiBodi (in celebration of the scrapping of VAT on period products) made me so angry. I'm not brave enough to put myself as GC on my socials but did fire off my thoughts in a contact form to the brand directly. Just pointing out that removing "women" from language is degrading and to be truly inclusive, we as women should be included. language IS important. Might not help but wanted my voice to be heard

FFS. It's like a competition to come up with the most batshit term to avoid saying women and girls.

Maddy70 · 28/11/2023 11:24

If you are a female transitioning into a male. You will still be menstruating, so it's a sensitive way of including everyone , in a similar way that if they said "women", that's excluding the ages 9+ girls who are not "women" but are still menstruating

I really can't get enraged by an inclusive term

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/11/2023 11:26

Women and girls, Maddy, as I said, is fully inclusive of non adult human female people. It's not "sensitive" to use this phrase as it's weird, alienating and dehumanising language for many women and girls.

KStockHERO · 28/11/2023 11:28

Period-experiencing human has actually really made me laugh. It's hilarious. So banal and daft.

Last week I was a period-experiencing human.
This week, I'm not
Next week, I won't be.
The following week I won't be either.

I'm still a woman all month long.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 28/11/2023 11:29

Erasing women in language isn't in the least "inclusive". It's hostile.

flyingbuttress43 · 28/11/2023 11:29

Well you should be. This sh*t is only just beginning. It will get worse before humanity returns to sanity. If they wanted to be inclusive why not say women and transmen? No they just have to rub it in that the world must bow down to 0.01% of the population, or whatever figure this extreme minority is.

UsuallyJustLurk · 28/11/2023 11:37

I can't remember my exact wording but I said women (and girls) should be included in the language used, they can add transmen/transitioning humans etc all they want but please include us women (and girls). It really does feel like the start of us being erased. Super!

How on earth is failing to correctly identify the vast majority of your customers 'inclusive'?

fedupandstuck · 28/11/2023 11:45

Never mind that no human or mammal on earth has or could transition from female to male. Of course, a female person could transition from feminine presenting to masculine presenting, as defined by the society/culture in which they live. Doesn't change their sex though. Hence "women and girls" being sufficient to describe the target audience.

As others have said, trying to be inclusive doesn't mean reducing the vast majority of your target audience to dehumanising terminology.

Well it doesn't include me as I don't refer to myself as a period experiencing human.

But it's exclusionary to most women and girls.

Women and girls works then

As pp said it’s ridiculous, dehumanising and inaccessible.

Just use plain English

JL690 · 28/11/2023 11:56

Biologically, only women and girls menstruate, so using any other description is factually incorrect. If it's incorrect it cannot be inclusive. End of.

MouseLouse · 28/11/2023 11:56

How does someone female go about becoming male?

What is the end stage?

(sorry that should be a reply to one of the above posters, but phone playing up)

GoneAlready · 28/11/2023 11:58

ArthurbellaScott · 28/11/2023 11:50

But it's exclusionary to most women and girls.

Exactly.

Upsetting tiny minority of female people who don’t wish to be referred to as women and girls by calling them women and girls: absolutely unforgivable.

Upsetting vast majority of female people who don’t wish to be referred to as “period experiencing humans” by calling them that anyway: perfectly fine.

Shocking double standards.

Helleofabore · 28/11/2023 12:02

Period of what? I am at times a period of depression experiencing human. At times a period of illness experiencing human. At times a period of exhaustion experiencing human.

This terminology is not fucking ‘inclusive’. Some people must be deeply deeply entrenched in their narrow vision of immediately affirming ideological belief to consider this ‘inclusive’ language. It is disassociating. It is leveraging a reader knowing the term ‘period’ means menstruation.

Additive language would be more appropriate. They can add whatever terms they choose to ‘women, girls [insert terms here].

Helleofabore · 28/11/2023 12:04

And speaking of factual based language rather than misinformation, I join others in pointing out that no female transitions into a male. Please stop spreading misinformation.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 28/11/2023 12:05

Only women menstruate. Signed, rage experiencing human.

aswarmofmidges · 28/11/2023 12:07

You can't transition to male

You can hate the idea that you are female

Do we stop Christmas because some people can't cope with the pain that season brings ? Should we ?

Are you serious?

UsuallyJustLurk · 28/11/2023 12:11

I wondered whether to poke my head above the parapet and post this so I'm relieved it's not just me. Screenshot of the said email attached, just so you can see for yourselves... there are other questionable phrases but this one particularly jumped out at me. Only an auto response received so far...

Well, if you want to be inclusive of menstruating 9 year olds then just say 'women and girls.' Easy, no?

Tallisker · 28/11/2023 12:15

So it's only UK residents that can buy the necessary here, is it? Visitors, tourists, you have to bring your own, you won't be able to buy stuff here.

This mangling of language is ridiculous.

No such thing as 'a female transitioning into a male'. As it is physically impossible for humans to change sex, such creatures are fantasy and do not exist. Therefore they are being inclusive of nobody, while excluding pretty much the whole of their customer base. To be inclusive of customers transitioning from feminine stereotypes to masculine stereotypes, women, girls abd transmen/boys would have been truly fully inclusive.

Perhaps this choice of language is carefully intended to exclude clownfish.

cheezncrackers · 28/11/2023 12:19

If they want to be inclusive why not say 'women, girls and transmen' FFS?
