Lady Ballers trailer.

Upcoming US comedy about men invading women's sport. Features Riley Gaines.

Yep, that's the way to do it: make the whole damn thing a laughing-stock.

It’s different when it’s men speaking up for women’s rights. The TRAs can’t abuse men the way they want to abuse women.

Froodwithatowel · 03/12/2023 11:34

Wondering now if I need to get a list from all the people I don't like or agree with, in order to eliminate from my life all books, music and films that they like.

I wouldn't like to be caught liking something that someone yukky liked, after all. I'd be supporting them.

Do people really have the time in their lives and availability to worry about this kind of stuff? Are they more worried about how they'd feel about themselves or afraid that other people might disapprove of them? It seems a pretty fragile way to live, and all about appearances.

It's a purity spiral. Everyone has to conform to the right way of thinking. Those who don't are shunned. If you associate in any way with a shunned person you are likely to be shunned yourself.

I first came across this concept on this thread:

How knitters got knotted in a purity spiral

I watched the film this morning. These are my general thoughts on it.

It's not terrible because let's face it, it was a comedy film begging to be made.

It's a film that should have been made and would have benefitted from being made by an experienced film production company. It needed much better actors in a lot of the parts. Surprisingly Jeremy Boering is a fairly good actor but Matt Walsh is not. Nor are most of the DW crowd.

Not sure what was the point of the Ted Cruz cameo - having managed to get him on board they should have written something wittier for him.

The concept in theory is a gift to comedy and it could have been a Blades of Glory but the people who could have made it the film it should have been were never going to make it. So honestly this Daily Wire effort is probably the best we're going to get.

Overall it's too on the nose. It has some moments where they hit it just right but then ruin it by shoe horning DW monologues that are out of place for a goofy comedy. If they'd just resisted that temptation and gone with show not tell it would feel more like a movie the masses would relate to. That inability to show a bit of restraint on one's pet causes for the sake of art is just the other side of the coin to Russell T Davies.

Final thought. Despite what I said above about the concept being a gift to comedy I couldn't find it funny. I don't think this is solely down to the DW being low budget or preachy. Comedy comes from the absurd and none of this is absurd now.

All this has all happened and worse. It's a well deserved piss take but it's at least 5 years too late. It's not funny to watch Riley Gaines forced to swim next to a dude in a cossie when we already saw that play out in a more ridiculous way that the film portrays. Men in women's showers isn't funny now we know that Riley and her team mates were subjected to this in real life.

TLDR - In a sane world this film would have been made by Hollywood proper before we crossed the rubicon. It wasn't and we crossed it so here we are.

Helleofabore · 03/12/2023 14:04

I couldn’t find it funny because it was the type of spoof that I don’t find funny. But I can see that it would appeal to some people, and I doubt it was made with me in mind.

PorcelinaV · 03/12/2023 14:41

I think comedy movies rarely get better than, "watchable with a few moments that make you laugh", and Lady Ballers delivered along those lines.

I think the production quality was fine, and the acting never became annoying for me. The Matt Walsh character was great I thought. Maybe needs his own spinoff film.

It's kind of strange anyway, that in 2023, they are making a 2000s style comedy, pushing conservative messaging, and it's as watchable as the comedy you would get from Hollywood today.

As a first attempt, and including some people that aren't even actors, they deserve credit!

Same here, not my kind of humour. I'd like to be able to appreciate it but strongly suspect there will be at least one scene where everyone does OTT theatrical screaming and I can't stand that sort of thing.

DeanElderberry · 03/12/2023 15:46

I gave it half an hour, but not my thing at all. The subject matter is too serious for that kind of cheap slapstick treatment imo.

Good for them. It will be interesting to see what the outcome is.

Hula2Hula · 03/12/2023 16:30

I cannot wait to watch it, looks brilliant! A film that a shows how truly awful men in women's sports is - I've already sent the link to the trailer to everyone I know 😂

Reminds me of South Park's 'Strong woman' sketch - if only we knew at the time this would become the sad reality.

OldCrone · 03/12/2023 16:56

We did know because it was already the reality. The South Park episode was only made in 2019. It was discussed on here.

Hula2Hula · 03/12/2023 17:22

@OldCrone Ah, makes sense - I watch South Park intermittently and not in any particular order, so assumed it was older. Either way it's brilliant and spot on as usual!

MalagaNights · 04/12/2023 09:44

I watched it last night.

I totally disagree with this comment from a PP: The subject matter is too serious for that kind of cheap slapstick treatment imo.

I think the slapstick, straight up piss take, is exactly what is needed on this subject and that's what makes the film great.

The power of ridicule cannot be understated and it's been largely missing in the debate because no one dared to do it.
So we're left with important but serious discussion of something blatantly absurd.

This cuts through that. The best thing about it is that they've dared to make it.

The film itself is amusing in an old school 2000 sports comedy type way. It's not roll around funny but it made me smile.
Some of the production is a bit clunky, and the acting variable.

Jeremy Boreing (who is a good actor) has said they couldn't get any actual actors to be in the film. Even ones who work with The Daily Wire on other projects wouldn't touch this. So they had to use all the Daily Wire employees as actors. Which adds amusement if you're a daily wire listener, but will go over your head if you're not.

I thought it got all the points of the issue covered well. What kids are being taught, how men are abusing it, and even why some people may be genuinely become confused about their gender but they still can't change sex.
All done in a slapstick sports comedy genre.

I also liked the speech Jeremy gave to his daughter when she said she wanted to be a boy. I imagine feminists may take against it but I thought it was a beautiful message to little girls about the amazingness of woman very rarely made or heard.

I also liked the squeezed in message about divorce: 'don't you people Google the outcomes before you blow up your kids lives.'
Again something very rarely said out loud but in my opinion, true.

So, it was good but not great in terms of production etc.

But it's just bloody amazing they made it. I hope they put out a free viewing on twitter soon to explode the heads of the TRAs.

The person that I think has actually been funniest on ridiculing this phenomenon is Ricky Gervais. His bit on this was laugh out loud funny.
But the more we laugh at it the better and this is another potentially massive blow to the validity of the whole charade.

This.

TrashedSofa · 04/12/2023 09:55

Holding any stance on any issue means some complete arsehole is going to agree with you. There's no way to avoid it, and it's a waste of time trying.

OkayScooby · 04/12/2023 19:47

I was watching this on the link uptrend but didn't have time to watch it all. Unfortunately they seem to have put it behind the paywall now.

It's not my sort of humour, but I really appreciate the sunlight on this ridiculousness.

I thought Matt Walsh was good in his part. He did say they couldn't get enough actors brave enough to take part, so the people at Daily Wire filled the gaps themselves.

All kudos to them for that. I'm glad it got made

PorcelinaV · 04/12/2023 20:53

GailBlancheViola · 30/11/2023 18:50

Looks like a full on Mulvaney piss take by one of the characters.

They only had to dial it up a little bit because the original was so bad in the first place, but I think that part was great.

PorcelinaV · 04/12/2023 20:57

They did do a dvd for the Gina Carano film, so it's a possibility that it will get a release in a few months.

PencilsInSpace · 04/12/2023 21:06

Fucking hell that was shite 😂

UtopiaPlanitia · 04/12/2023 21:06

In what way do you think that watching a film would put you "on the same side" as someone who briefly appeared in it?

Bad news for everyone who watches Home Alone at Christmas then.
